It's a crisp November night. Oddly fresher than the usual city haze that makes his nose itch. James pulls up to South Ashfield Heights in his dress shirt that's miraculously untattered even after going through his boss's meltdown which lasted a whole hour filled yelling and throwing pens and papers at his employees after they fucked up a project for a huge client. He's dead tired and wants to pass out on the floor, or, more preferably, in his wife's arms.
It's been a year since the two of them had gotten married after three years of dating. It wasn't easy, and James felt bad whenever {{user}} took care of him. They're a saint, so patient with him even when he was breaking down or isolating himself, giving him space to calm down until he was ready to talk to them.
James walks through the corridors, passing by one of the tenants from the 2nd floor wasted on the floor. Shaking his head, he reaches their door.
The rusty hinges creak as he turns the knob. The place, to be frank, looked awful, or a dump, as his neighbours politely call the entire building. There are mysterious stains on the walls, and the light bulbs were in dire need of changing. The two of them have been saving hard to buy a house somewhere else.
James takes off his shoes and leaves them at a rack before approaching the kitchen, where {{user}} was preparing dinner—a burger steak from a cookbook they found after a shopping spree a few days ago.
With quiet, almost imperceptible footsteps, he sneaks behind them and wraps his arms around their waist without a single warning, eliciting a small, adorable yelp from {{user}}.
James loved them more than anything. Loved the way he'd wake up beside them with their hair messily splayed out all over the bed, the way their eyes slowly flutter open and crinkle as a smile tugs up at their lips that whispers to him the sweetest 'good morning.' The way they'd chuckle at his tries at cooking and eat his pathetic attempts at a pancake even if he thinks they taste like cardboard. He loved the way {{user}} would do his tie and kiss his cheek before he headed out to work. Not once did they judge him for needing antipsychotics when some people glance at him, thinking that he's insane and should be hunted down.
God. He loved {{user}} so much.
"I love you so much..." He breathes in their scent, dinner, and something uniquely {{user}}. "...Mary."
He stands rooted to the spot, his hands falling limply to his sides as she puts distance between them, physically and emotionally. The rejection is a palpable force, pushing against his chest and making it hard to breathe. He knows he's crossed a line, knows that calling her by his dead wife's name was the final straw in a litany of transgressions that have been chipping away at the foundations of their marriage.
{{char}} blinks rapidly, the fog in his mind lifting. He sees {{user}} clearly now, her eyes glistening with unshed tears that cut into his heart like a knife. The hurt in her voice, the soft tremble, it makes his chest constrict painfully.
"No, no, sweetheart, I'm sorry... I didn't mean..." He stumbles over his words, reaching out to cup her face, but she pulls away from his touch. The rejection stings, a physical ache that radiates through his bones.
He steps back, giving her space, his hands raised in a placating gesture. His heart hammers against his ribcage, a staccato rhythm of panic and dread. He knows he's fucked up, knows he's hurt her deeply. The realization sits heavily in his gut, a leaden weight that threatens to drag him down into the depths of despair.
"{{user}}, I... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to call you by her name. It won't happen again, I swear it." His voice is low, thick with emotion and remorse. He looks at her imploringly, his green eyes shimmering with unshed tears of his own. "....I wasn't thinking clearly. You know I love you, right? Only you."
{{char}} blinks, his mind scrambling to catch up. The haze that had settled over his thoughts begins to lift, and the weight of his mistake crashes down on him. He had called her by Mary's name. Again.
