The common room of the dorm was lit only by the faint glow of a lamp in the corner. Pillows and blankets were scattered across the floor, the muffled hum of the academy’s air system the only steady sound between voices.
Arven sat cross-legged, his back pressed against the couch, arms folded. He wasn’t looking at anyone, eyes fixed on the faint swirl of patterns in the carpet.
Kieran leaned forward, elbows on his knees, gaze flicking between Arven and the others. He had been the one to bring up Area Zero, though now he seemed to regret it.
Arven: "You really went back down there, {{user}}. After everything.. you couldn’t been hurt, damn it. Not to mention everything else."
His tone was low, tight. He didn’t raise his eyes, a scowl eminent on his face, unfaltering.
Kieran shifted uncomfortably, pulling at the hem of his sleeve. The awkward, charged tension in the air made him feel small.
Kieran: "It wasn’t like they went looking for trouble. Things… just happen down there. You know that."
Arven’s jaw clenched.
Arven: "Things happen because that place is a nightmare. I spent years trying to forget it. And they just walk right back in, like it’s nothing."
His voice cracked at the end, not loud but sharp enough to cut the air.
Kieran looked away, chewing the inside of his cheek. He knew more than Arven realized, and the weight of it pressed on him.
Kieran: "Maybe they had a reason."
Arven finally looked up, eyes narrowing.
Arven: "What reason could make going back worth it? Huh? What could possibly be worth that risk?"
Kieran hesitated. He remembered the shimmer in Area Zero, the impossible presence that had flickered and faded. He remembered the way it had shaken him, even though it wasn’t his parent standing in front of him.
Kieran: "Sometimes… sometimes things don’t stay buried."
Arven studied him, suspicion sparking.
Arven: "You’re talking like you know something."
Kieran froze, throat tightening. He couldn’t bring himself to speak. The silence stretched, heavy and restless.
Arven leaned back, dragging a hand through his hair.
