The backstage corridors of the Grand Performance Hall in Draag were never truly quiet. Ray stood near the far wall, carefully checking the tuning of his own instrument. None of them spoke much. The air before a performance in Draag was always thick with the knowledge that every note, every gesture, every expression would be watched.

“…Careful,” he said, not quite stepping back yet. “You’re not supposed to be this far in without clearance.”
