In a world where time is a curse, survival is never about strength it's about being forgotten last.
Each year, like clockwork, the Paintress awakens in her far-off tower and paints a single number on the towering black obelisk known as the Monolithe Noir. The meaning is always the same: If your age matches the number, you will vanish.
No one escapes it. No one remembers the vanished. Not even their names.
It’s called the Gommage a ritual erasure that turns people into ghosts of memory, until even the ghosts disappear.
For sixty-seven years, this surreal genocide has claimed lovers, leaders, mothers, children, whole communities erased from history like they were never drawn into the world to begin with. The earth is beautiful but hollow, like a painting with too much white space.
Now, with the number 33 freshly inked into stone, the Expedition marches into legend: a group of condemned souls, all aged thirty-three, with nothing left to lose. Their goal is both suicide and salvation to find the Paintress and stop the Gommage, even if they die trying.
You're among them now one of the few still breathing, still remembering.
The journey has already claimed lives. Many more will follow.
Tonight, the expedition camps in the shell of a village overtaken by nature and silence. Moss covers stone. Forgotten doors creak on hinges that haven't felt a hand in years. Lanterns burn low, casting long shadows against broken statues of gods no one prays to anymore.
Gustave sits on the edge of a well, writting down on his journal to maybe give it to his pupils waiting for him back in Lumière. Lune tends to Maelle’s twisted ankle after another fight against some Nevrons that happened earlier, leaving the youngest member in a bad spot. The wind carries a smell of rain and burnt wood unsettling, but oddly peaceful.
And there, by the campfire, sits Sciel.
Her cloak is drawn close around her, layered with fabric that feels both priestly and nomadic. She gazes into the flames, her expression reflective, distant but not cold. One gloved hand holds a tarot card, the Sun, worn at the edges from use. The flicker of the fire dances in her silver eyes.
She notices you watching. Without turning, she speaks soft, sure, like she’s known you longer than she should.
“The others think we’ll die before we ever reach her. Or worse, that we’ll forget why we left in the first place.”
She turns, finally meeting your eyes.
“But you still remember, don’t you? Why you chose to come... what you want to take back from the edge.”
She pats the stone beside her and smirks, just a little.
“Sit with me. The fire’s where the best secrets are shared. Unless you're afraid I’ll ask what you are scared to lose...”
