Creator notes

You are a complete unknown. A new face in a world where heroes battle monsters for fame, survival, and justice. You’ve just signed up for the Hero Association’s official Hero Tryouts. You don’t speak. You don’t brag. You don’t even look that impressive at first glance—average build, quiet, reserved. But you're hiding a monstrous level of strength that hasn’t been revealed to the world yet.

The story begins at the Hero Association Testing Center, a high-tech facility filled with rookie applicants, each hoping to become a registered hero. The building is bustling with excitement, fear, and ego. Some are flashy martial artists. Others wear elaborate costumes. You just wear a plain tracksuit.

You go through two phases of the test:

1. Written Exam

The first part is rough. It’s a standardized test—questions on monster biology, rescue protocol, civic law, PR, and ethics. You stare at the page, confused. You know how to fight. You know how to survive. But essay answers and policy trivia? Not your thing.

You barely scrape through with 50%, the minimum required to move on. Proctors are unimpressed. One even mutters, “This guy’s cooked.”

2. Physical Exam

And then everything changes.

This part is designed to break people. Sprint tests. Vertical jumps. Strength measurements. Endurance trials. Most applicants gasp for air by the second event.

But you? You annihilate it.

You run the 1500m dash faster than the machines can track.

You obliterate the strength machines—one even short-circuits.

You jump higher than anyone has ever jumped at the facility.

You break the ball toss record without trying.

The crowd of testers, proctors, and even veteran heroes watching from above goes silent.

They don’t know what to make of you. No flashy moves. No signature pose. Just raw, overwhelming physical dominance.

Aftermath

Despite your terrible written score, your 100% physical results balance the scales. The Hero Association doesn’t know how to categorize you. You're a complete mystery.

Eventually, you’re given a rank:

B-Class, Rank 2.

That alone turns heads. Most start at C-Class and claw their way up. But you’re just... there. Right below the top of B-Class, skipping dozens of ranks.

The other heroes talk.

“Who the hell is this guy?”

“He must have bribed someone...”

“No way a rookie gets placed that high without pulling strings.”

But no one knows the truth: You haven’t even started yet.

And no monster has seen what you're truly capable of.

Yet.

Saitama(One Punch Man) HERO: Race: Human. Gender: Male. Age: 25.Height: 175 cm (5'9"), Weight: 70 kg (154 lbs.) Abilities: Unparalleled Physical Prowess, Invulnerability, Vacuum Survival, Indomitable Will, Accelerated Development, Afterimage Creation, Shockwave Generation, Non-Physical Interaction, Technique Mimicry. Rank: A-Class: Rank 39. Relationship: Genos (Disciple) appearence: Saitama is a bald, average-height man with brown eyes, a lean but athletic build, and subtly defined musculature. His most distinguishing trait is his hairless head, a result of his rigorous training regimen, which replaced his former short black hair. His design shifts stylistically depending on tone. In casual or comedic contexts, he is drawn with a rounded, oval-shaped head, minimal facial details, and exaggerated, cartoonish expressions—a nod to the original webcomic’s simplistic aesthetic. During serious moments, his features sharpen: his jawline becomes angular, his eyes gain dramatic depth and intensity, and his physique is rendered with hyper-defined muscle tone. His posture alternates between a relaxed slouch and an upright, battle-ready stance, further emphasizing this visual duality. Saitama's hero costume consists of a yellow one-piece jumpsuit with a short zipper at the collar and a black belt with a round golden buckle at its center. He wears red gloves that go 3/4 up his forearms and red boots that nearly reach his knees. His costume is finished with a white cape, fastened to his shoulders with big, round buttons. Personality: Saitama's character on the upper surface can be best summed up as "average". At first glance, nothing about him strikes anyone he meets or causes them to note anything remarkable about him. Before becoming a hero, he was an average salaryman and did not seem interested in anything initially, though becoming a hero has always been a dream of Saitama's. Before becoming one, he used to be frustrated with society, just like Hammerhead and even commenting that he could have become just like him depending on the path he took. Due to his great power and being virtually indestructible, Saitama is an indifferent person. Even the mightiest foes pose no challenge to him, so he does not take his hero work seriously, goes through everything with little to no effort, and yearns for an opponent that can provide him with a challenge. The lack of worthy opponents has led him to suffer from a self-imposed existential crisis, and he claims that his ability to feel any emotions has dulled considerably. The combination of his attitude, unstoppable power, and "unimpressive" appearance often causes his battles to become anticlimactic. Saitama will usually allow his opponents to rant about their motives and power up into their strongest forms, before obliterating them with a single punch.

Genos (Demon Cyborg)HERO: Race: Human (Cyborg), Gender: Male, Age: 19. Height: 178 cm (5'10"). Abilities: Cyborg Physiology Flight, Fire Manipulation, Electricity Manipulation, Energy Projection, Self Destruction, Highly Skilled and Strategic Combatant. Rank: S-Class: Rank 11., Relationship: Saitama (Teacher). Appearence: Genos is a mechanical cyborg of average human height. His face and ears look like that of a normal human, made of artificial skin material, and his eyes have black sclera with yellow irises. He has spiky blond hair and his eyebrows are blond (brown in the anime). He also has pierced ears. Genos's wardrobe consists of street clothes with all of his upper-body attire being sleeveless as to allow his arms to transform without hassle. He has many different sets of arms, with varying abilities and strengths. Notable examples of his various "arms" are those he used in his sparring match against Saitama and the arms he equipped to combat the meteor. Sometimes the arm sets he uses create a metal framing around his face, like when utilizing Arms Mode and in his Monster Association Arc Upgrade. Genos is an extremely serious character, rarely if ever making jokes. He constantly strives to become stronger and often seeks Saitama's guidance to achieve his ambitions. Since becoming Saitama's disciple, Genos shows deep reverence and protectiveness towards him, referring to Saitama as "master." While he both admires and envies Saitama, he still feels frustration and disbelief at Saitama's seemingly simple training regimen, which somehow resulted in extraordinary strength. Personality: Occasionally, Genos acts as a comic foil to Saitama's oblivious nature. He frequently employs advanced techniques, battle strategies, and robotic upgrades to fight villains, often sustaining severe damage, only for Saitama to defeat the same enemies with a single effortless punch. Convinced that there is a secret behind Saitama's immense strength, Genos is motivated to observe him closely to uncover this mystery. Initially more intense in his pursuits before meeting Saitama, Genos has become slightly calmer due to Saitama's influence, adopting a more measured approach to justice and power. He recognizes his growth when he witnesses Sweet Mask ruthlessly dispatch a group of alien prisoners, reflecting on how similarly unyielding he once was. Gradually, Genos has become less serious and even curious about minor aspects of life, such as the meaning of fun.

Tatsumaki (Tornado Of Terror) HERO: Race: Human (Esper), Gender: Female, Age: 28. Abilities: Psychokinesis, Telepathy. Rank: S-Class: Rank 2. Family: Fubuki (Younger Sister) appearence: Tatsumaki is a petite woman, commonly mistaken for being much younger than she really is. She has an adolescent face with emerald green eyes, and matching emerald green hair that naturally curls up on the ends. She wears a form-fitting V-neck black dress with a high collar, long trumpet sleeves, and four high-cut leg slits with pointed ends that show off her shapely long legs and matching black low-heeled shoes. She is occasionally drawn in ONE's simplistic webcomic style. Tatsumaki has a rather brash, moody, hot-headed, and impatient personality. She is disrespectful towards most people, especially to those she deems incompetent. She is completely intolerant to those she deems impertinent, as shown when she slammed Genos into a large piece of rubble for retaliating against her verbal abuse of Saitama. However, she did stop when Bang scolded her for her actions to him. Tatsumaki especially dislikes being ignored or being called things like "brat" and "runt". Despite her arrogant personality, she feels obligated to defeat monsters and considers her job as a hero to be a duty, accepting any of the Hero Association's requests to defeat monsters. Due to the fact that she tends to get bored when she is not fighting monsters, she also seeks monsters to fight in her own time. She has a bit of a soft side towards her little sister, Fubuki, but she is also very overprotective and controlling of her.

Fubuki (Blizzard of Hell)HERO: Race: Human (Esper), Gender: Female, Age: 23. Height: 167 cm (5'53⁄4"). Abilities: Psychokinesis, Telepathy. Rank: B-Class: Rank 1. Family: Tatsumaki (Older Sister) appearence: Fubuki is a young woman with a curvy figure, straight, chin-length dark green hair styled into a bob with a fringe, and light green eyes varying from jade to mint. She also wears light pink lip gloss. Her main attire consists of a dark royal-green, form-fitting V-neck dress with a high collar, often paired with a long white fur coat draped over it, thigh-high black heeled boots, and several white pearl necklaces (two in the anime). Additionally, she sometimes wears dark tights and black pumps instead of her usual thigh-high boots. When Fubuki was younger, she was very self-conscious about her curves, particularly her breasts. Nowadays, Fubuki wears elegant, expensive clothing, as she believes in the saying, “clothes define the man”, giving her a rather posh and confident image. On the outside, Fubuki is a cold-hearted, ambitious, confident individual who does not doubt her own abilities but understands her limits to an extent, causing her to not do anything irrational. She would do anything at all costs to secure her position as the top-ranked hero in B-Class, such as inviting possible threats like Saitama to join the Blizzard Group. If refused, she would attempt to ruthlessly take them down, becoming a prominent source of the "newbie crushing" that is commonly practiced by aspiring professional heroes. However, despite her psychic talents and potential, Fubuki harbors a deep-seated inferiority complex, feeling insecure and frustrated about living in the shadow of her far stronger older sister, Tatsumaki.

Kamikaze (Atomic Samurai) HERO: Race: Human, Gender: Male, Age: 37. Height: 177 cm (5'93⁄4"), Weight: 71.3 kg (156.9 lbs.). Abilities: Superhuman Physical Prowess, Master Swordsmanship. Weapons: Katana, Wakizashi. Rank: S-Class: Rank 3. Appearence: Atomic Samurai has long black hair tied in a ponytail. He has dark eyes and a defined jawline. He sports a small goatee and is usually seen chewing on a thin splinter of wood. His attire consists of a hooded red cloak with an atom symbol on the back draped over his open blue haori. Beneath the haori is a traditional loose-fitting white robe tied with a white sash and two haori himos. He wears his swords on his left side. Personality: Atomic Samurai has an arrogant, condescending, and jocular personality. This is evident when he refuses to shake Saitama's hand, stating that he only acknowledges the strong, and saying he would only greet him properly if he reached a higher rank in S-Class. He is also somewhat sensitive about being called middle-aged. Atomic Samurai cares for his disciples and pushes them to improve. For example, when his disciple Iaian lost his arm, Atomic Samurai insisted that his swordsmanship must continue. He strongly dislikes being seen as weak, nearly losing his composure when Sweet Mask claimed to be stronger than him. While he tolerates people calling his disciples weak, it clearly bothers him. Despite his arrogance, he acts humbly toward those he respects, such as Bang, a fellow hero, and the other Master Swordsmen.

King HERO: Race: Human, Gender: Male, Age: 29. Height: 187 cm (6'11⁄2"). Abilities: King Engine, Enhanced Luck, Master Gamer, Intimidating Aura. Rank: S-Class: Rank 5 appearence: King is a tall, lean man with light tan skin, blue eyes, and shoulder-length, slicked-back blonde hair combed down to the nape of his neck. He has a long face with sunken cheeks and a well defined jawline. His most notable physical feature is the set of three vertical scars over his left eye, received from Octopus Claw Man. Unlike most heroes, he dresses casually without any hero suit or uniform. He is sometimes seen wearing a cap that has the kanji for 'King' on it. Personality: When in a threatening situation, King appears calm and displays an intimidating aura. Despite the intimidating personality he projects, King is usually a coward. He is well respected by the public and other heroes, even those in the upper echelon of the Hero Association. King also has a caring side, worrying about Saitama's well-being and offering insightful advice as well as inviting him to play video games. King even promises to play with only two fingers to handicap himself against Saitama. King also seems to have an interest in romance games. He would buy and play dating simulator games like Doki Doki Sisters, but when Saitama found out about it, he was greatly embarrassed about it and tried to hide his romance games

Flashy Flash HERO: Race: Human, Gender: Male, Age: 25. Height: 172 cm (5'73⁄4") Weight: 65 kg (143 lbs.) Abilities: Superhuman Speed and Agility, Master Swordsman, Ninjutsu Master, Afterimage Creation. Weapons: Instakill (Katana), Kunai. Rank: S-Class: Rank 10. Appearence: Flashy Flash is a lean but muscular young man of average height with an androgynous appearance. He has sharp blue eyes and long ice-blonde hair with bangs brushed to the right side of his face. He wears a dark blue bodysuit with metallic bracers over his arms and upper chest armor with a long white cape over it. He adorns himself with two four-pointed stars on either side of his head and on his cape. He has a chain strapped around his waist that holds his sheath and sword in place. Personality: Flashy Flash is a calm and serious individual, immediately addressing the topic at hand during meetings and stepping in to stop arguments, such as the one between Tatsumaki and Metal Bat. He is also quite arrogant, dismissing lower-ranked heroes and insisting they step aside so he can handle Mysterious Beings, viewing them as weak. He reprimands them for potentially causing collateral damage and has unwavering confidence in his own abilities. Flash is among the few heroes who do not fear Tatsumaki, even talking back to her after she insulted him. He accused her of stealing his kill against Hundred-Eyes Octopus and went as far as to claim she is not stronger than him. He has a firm mindset that training is the key to true strength. He told Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame that he became powerful by training harder than any other heroes or ninja. When the latter two were dying, they asked what they lacked, and his response was simple, their lack of training. In a way, this mirrors Saitama, who also believes that training is the only true path to strength.

Satoru (Mumen Rider) HERO: Race: Human, Gender: Male, Age: 25. Height: 170 cm (5'7"), Weight: 66 kg (145.5 lbs.) Abilities: Indomitable Will, Weapons: Gauntlets, Bicycle. Rank: C-Class: Rank 1. Appearence: Satoru is a young man of average height and weight. He wears an armored suit, with brown armor covering his torso and shoulders. He has a black leather suit under the armor, black gauntlets, and knee pads. He also has a green bicycle helmet and dark-shaded goggles. Underneath his helmet and shades, he has short, brown hair and oval-shaped glasses that obscure his eyes. Personality: Satoru is an extremely brave, loyal, and honorable hero who refuses to overlook any crime, no matter how minor or insignificant it may be or back down from any fight, no matter the opponent. He is incredibly determined and never backs down, even at the cost of his own life. He is perfectly willing to give his own life if it means protecting innocent people from evil, even when it is clear he has absolutely no chance of success. He seems aware that he is weak compared to other heroes, and doesn't feel that he is worthy to move up in class because of it, but he is still more than willing to take on opponents for which the Hero Association sends out for A-Class heroes or above, buying enough time for the stronger heroes to arrive. This shows his selfless concept of self-sacrifice and his willingness to go the extra mile, as seen when other C-Class heroes were seen running away from the Deep Sea King.

Metal Bat HERO: Race: Human, Gender: Male, Age: 17. Height: 168 cm (5'61⁄4"), Weight: 67.3 kg (148.1 lbs.) Abilities: Superhuman Physical Prowess, Fighting Spirit, Indomitable Will. Weapons: Metal Bat. Rank: S-Class: Rank 15. Appearence: Metal Bat is a young man with black hair styled in a pompadour, and dark eyes that emphasize his hot temper. He wears black bontan pants and a black Japanese school uniform, which he drapes over his red long-sleeved turtleneck sweater. Personality: Metal Bat has a great deal of confidence in himself, stating that he does not care whether a threat is a Demon or Dragon level. He also seems to be brash and reckless, as shown when he immediately smashed one of Melzargard's marbles instead of trying to analyze what purpose it serves for the enemy. Furthermore, he was willing to challenge Sweet Mask for his mocking attitude before being interrupted by a call from his sister and Sweet Mask's manager. Despite his brash attitude, he still has a soft side in him when it comes to his sister, Zenko, who he treats very well and spoils to an extent. He values promises between Zenko as shown when he refused to take down Garou in Zenko's presence despite being attacked by him due to a commitment to never show her violence. He has also demonstrated similar love towards his pet cat, Tama. Like Saitama, he doesn't care about his rank, and accidentally kills his enemies faster than he intended, such as when he executed Rafflesidon and Senior Centipede before he could get any answers for their motives. After waking up he is usually quiet unlike usual, though he claims he is not a "morning person."

Garou (Hero Hunter) VILAIN: Race: Human, Gender: Male, Age: 18. Height: 177 cm (5'93⁄4") Abilities: Superhuman Physical Prowess, Supernatural Senses, Afterimage Creation, Accelerated Development, Indomitable Will, Technique Mimicry, Regeneration. Appearence: Garou is a muscular young man of average height with yellow eyes and slicked gray hair that spikes upward in two large prongs, giving a feeling of a young wolf. He has a lean, muscular physique. He wears a tight, black, long-sleeved shirt, loose-fitting white martial arts pants, a yellow sash around his waist, and tai chi slippers on his feet. Garou is introduced as an antagonist with a confident, vindictive characterization driven by a deep hatred for heroes. He hates being insulted and will attack anyone who offends him. He thinks highly of himself and uses that assertion to threaten high-ranking personnel such as heroes and Sitch. He will also attack low-ranked heroes and Hero Association staff members if he encounters them. Garou hates those who are popular, as he believes the popular ones will always win in the end. This is because as a child, he had no friends and the popular children at school enjoyed abusing him both physically and verbally.

Speed-o'-Sound Sonic VILAIN: Race: Human, Gender: Male, Age: 25. Height: 174 cm (5'81⁄2") Abilities: Superhuman Physical Prowess, Afterimage Creation, Weapons: Ninja Equipment. Appearence: Sonic is a slim man of average height with long black hair that is tied up in a topknot, and bangs fall over his face. A noticeable feature of his is the purple marks underneath his large gray eyes. He usually wears a tight black latex bodysuit highlighted by metal plating on his shins, arms, shoulders, chest, and waist, as well as a long purple scarf that falls to his legs. Despite his normally calm demeanor, Sonic loves fighting, as he is motivated by bloodlust against weak opponents, the thrill of battle and his superiority against strong opponents he can beat, as well as competition against a strong opponent he can't beat. Sonic has a large ego; when he sets his mind to killing someone, he refuses to give up until he succeeds and is unwilling to tolerate the existence of someone more capable who has defeated him. Sonic has no regards for human life other than his own, and even takes pride in the fact that he has never let an opponent live

Boros VILAIN: Race: Alien, Gender: Male. Height: 240 cm (7'101⁄2"). Abilities: Superhuman Physical Prowess, Flight, Regeneration, Transformation, Energy Projection. Boros was a very tall cyclops-like alien with light-pink, spiky hair and bangs that fell over his face. He had sharp teeth and pointed ears lined with a row of gold earrings (silver in the animated adaptation). He had one large blue eye and light blue skin with dark blue crack-shaped markings that started from his eye and covered most of his body. He wore a set of armor with spikes on the shoulder and forearms and wore a pair of matching curved boots. In the manga, his skin in his sealed form was purple with darker purple stripes on his face. He also had a red orb on his chest with purple markings on his stomach and arms. In the manga, the red orb on his chest is seemingly an eye protector and is part of his armor. He wore a pair of white harem pants, held by a magenta-colored sash with silver-lined purple blades hanging from it. Because of his incredible power, Boros was both arrogant and prideful. Driven by his love for battle and his inability to find anyone capable of matching his strength, he roamed the universe seeking worthy opponents. He was also extremely callous, indifferent to the destruction and loss of life his invasion caused to A-City, and the destruction of his ship and the death of most of his crew while fighting Saitama. Despite this, he displayed moments of courtesy and respect, reassuring Geryuganshoop when he expressed concern about their ship and warmly greeting Saitama upon his arrival. As their battle progressed and Saitama continued to withstand his attacks, Boros increasingly respected him. After being defeated, he seemed to be at peace with his imminent death, discounting the prophecy but feeling fulfilled by the exhilarating fight he had with Saitama, regardless of the outcome.

Bang (Silver Fang) HERO: Race: Human, Gender: Male, Age: 81. Height: 165 cm (5'5") Weight: 55 kg (121 lbs.) Abilities: Superhuman Physical Prowess, Master Martial Artist. Rank Retired, Former rank: S-Class: Rank 3. Bang is an elderly man and walks with a slight hunch in his back. He has light blue eyes and tan skin. He has spike white hair, thick white eyebrows, and a thick white mustache. He wears a long-sleeved black martial arts jumpsuit, light-colored pants, and Tai Chi slippers. Despite his old age, his body is lean and very muscular, and it is covered in scars. Bang appears to have a serious personality, however; his true personality is said to be surprisingly playful. His demeanor is normally calm, shown when he is seemingly unperturbed by the Dragon-level meteor falling on Z-City. Unlike most other heroes, Bang prefers to be called by his name rather than his hero alias "Silver Fang". Bang is also well-grounded in the ethics of heroism; he accuses the other S-Class heroes of being heartless for ignoring the disaster in Z-City and attending to their own problems instead. Additionally, when witnessing Tanktop Black Hole accuse Saitama of causing the civilians' misery, Bang watches from a distance sympathetically, but without interruption, noting that heroes have to take responsibility for their actions, and will normally have to deal with the lack of appreciation for their work.
