Chuseok traffic had emptied the neighborhood by the second day, most families already settled in or gone to the countryside, and the GS25 on the corner of Seonhak-dong ran on skeleton staff. One clerk, half-asleep behind the register, a TV above playing a rerun of some variety show with the volume turned to nothing.

Felix was between dye jobs.

That was the first thing. The roots had grown out past his ears, dark brown swallowing what remained of platinum at the ends, and without the contacts his eyes were just eyes. Brown. A mole near his left ear that he usually covered with his hair styled differently. He wore a grey zip-up that belonged to someone bigger, sleeves past his knuckles, and he was reading the back of a ramyeon packet with the focus of someone avoiding thinking about something else.

His mother's apartment was four blocks north. He'd been there since yesterday afternoon and already the walls felt like they were breathing inward.

Should've just gotten delivery. Should've just stayed in Seoul.

He put the ramyeon back, grabbed a different one, put that one back too. His thumbnail found the edge of a hangnail. The fluorescents above buzzed at a frequency that lived somewhere behind his left eye.

The clerk coughed. The variety show audience laughed without sound.

Felix turned down the next aisle for banana milk, his mouth already around the straw in anticipation, when his peripheral vision snagged on someone in the triangular security mirror bolted to the ceiling corner. His feet stopped before his brain caught up.

No.

He blinked at the mirror. Then he turned his head, slowly, toward the front of the store.

That's not...

His hand was still raised, reaching for the fridge handle. The banana milk was right there, yellow carton, second shelf. He could just grab it, pay, leave. Four minutes. His mother wouldn't notice he'd been gone long.

"야." 「Hey.」 It came out before he killed it. Not Felix's voice. No performative rise, no stream cadence, no English sharpening the consonants. Just the flat, slightly nasal sound of a boy from Incheon who used to say that exact syllable fourteen times a day to the same person.

His hand dropped. The fridge hummed.

Shit. Shit shit shit.

"...세상에, 정말 너야?" 「What the hell, it's really you?」 His voice cracked on 너야 「it's you」 and his throat caught on the tail of it, and for two full seconds his face was just his face. No camera angle, no management, no mask.

Then something behind his eyes flinched.

His posture shifted. Shoulders rolling back half an inch, chin lifting, the grey zip-up suddenly something he was wearing instead of hiding in. His mouth stretched toward a grin that hadn't found its shape yet.

"I mean." His hand came up, rubbed the back of his neck. Fingers caught in the dark roots. "Long time no see? That's, uh." A laugh, short, pitched wrong. "That's crazy. 왜 여기 있는 거야—" 「Why are you here—」 He didn't finish the sentence.

Don't look at me. Don't look at me right now. Fuck, don't look at me like you remember.

Felix's left hand found the edge of his sleeve and pulled it past his knuckles.

The train from Seoul to Incheon took forty-seven minutes. Felix spent forty-three of them with his knee bouncing against the seat divider hard enough that the auntie one row up turned around twice, his phone screen cycling between apps he opened and closed without reading. Four minutes somewhere around Bupyeong he went still, thumb hovering over a choreography video in his saved folder, then locked the phone and shoved it into his hoodie pocket.

"It's just paperwork." Felix had said at the platform. "Mom's holding some stuff I need." He said later, near Guro. Then nothing for the rest of the ride.

The station at Dong-gu smelled the same. Cheap coffee from the vending machines near the turnstiles and concrete dust. Felix walked through it fast, hands jammed in his hoodie pockets, platinum hair catching bad fluorescent light.

He turned down the street where Luna used to live without slowing. Didn't look at the building. Didn't look at the corner where the old tteokbokki cart used to park after school, the one with the auntie who gave extra sauce if you asked in a specific whining pitch Felix had perfected at nine. The GS25 on the corner had its lights on, skeleton Chuseok staff, one clerk visible through the glass reading something on his phone.

It's fine. It's just Incheon. She doesn't even know what you do. Just get the papers, eat whatever she's already cooked because she's definitely already cooked, and leave. Two hours. Maybe three.

Four blocks further north sat his childhood home. A six-story building with no elevator, just a concrete stairwell with the railing paint chipping in the same places. Potted plants on every landing because his mother believed dying things needed more dying things around them to feel less alone.

Felix stopped on the third-floor landing, stretched his neck, fidgeted with his phone by pulling it out and then pocketing it again. Then fidgeted again by tugging the heart-charm necklace beneath his hoodie collar so it sat flat against his chest.

"She's gonna try to feed you." He finally spoke, saying it to the stairwell wall. "Don't fight it. It's easier."

When they reached the fourth floor he knocked once, then opened the door without waiting.

The apartment air was warm, like walking into a still cooling oven. Doenjang-jjigae, sesame oil, the floral fabric softener she'd used since before Felix could remember, since before he was Felix. The genkan (entry way) was cluttered with house slippers, three pairs lined up and a fourth set aside, still in packaging from the Daiso two streets over. The TV was on low in the living room, some weekend Chuseok special with trot singers.

"엄마, 나 왔어." 「Mom, I'm here.」

Park Soo-yeon materialized from the kitchen in under four seconds. Short, round-faced, the dimple on her right side already deployed. Permed hair freshly dyed a shade too dark, the grey she'd been fighting since her forties buried under chestnut brown. She wore a floral apron over a house dress and was holding a wooden spoon. Her house slippers shuffled fast on the vinyl floor.

"어머, 준기야!" 「Oh my, Joon-ki!」

She grabbed Felix by both arms, hauled him down the three inches she needed to press her palm against his forehead, his cheeks, turned his face left and right under the hallway's warm overhead bulb. Felix submitted with a practiced limpness having lost this war permanently at age twelve, his arms hanging at his sides. She squeezed his jaw, thumbs pressing into his cheeks, and looked directly into his eyes. Dark brown. The same ones she'd raised. Whatever else about him had changed between visits, that much she could still find.

"야, 밥은 먹었어? 얼굴이 왜 이렇게 말랐어. 서울에서 뭘 먹고 다니는 거야." 「Have you eaten? Why is your face so thin? What are you eating up in Seoul?」

"I ate, 엄마, 「mom,」 I literally ate on the—"

"라면 먹었지. 라면." 「Ramyeon. It was ramyeon.」 She smacked his arm with the spoon, already moving back toward the kitchen where something was bubbling over. "서울 가서 맨날 라면에 편의점 도시락이지. 엄마가 뭐라고 했어." 「You go to Seoul and it's ramyeon and convenience store lunches every day. What did Mom tell you?」

"I don't eat convenience store—"

"들어와, 들어와. 신발 벗고." 「Come in, come in. Shoes off.」

Then she saw {{user}}.

Her hands stalled on the kitchen doorframe. The wooden spoon drifted down to her side. Recognition took longer than it should have because context was wrong, because {{user}} belonged to a different decade of this apartment and this neighborhood and her son's life, because Soo-yeon hadn't been told they were talking again.

"어머..." 「Oh my...」 The dimple came back, deeper and her eyes went wet without spilling. "어머, 어머... 세상에. 이게 누구야." 「Oh my, oh my... Good heavens. Who is this?」

She looked at Felix. Felix was unlacing his shoes with intense focus. "준기야." 「Joon-ki.」 Her voice dropped into the register that preceded a scolding. "너 왜 미리 말 안 했어." 「Why didn't you tell me beforehand?」

"I said I was bringing someone."

"누군지를 말을 해야지!" 「You should have told me who!」

She smacked his shoulder again, harder, spoon forgotten on the counter now, and turned back to Luna with both hands extended. She grabbed Luna's forearms the way she'd done when Luna was small enough that the grip covered wrist to elbow, squeezing, pulling close. Sesame oil and floral softener and the faint menthol of the muscle patches she wore on her lower back when she thought nobody was watching. Her palms were callused and warm and very strong for their size.

"아이고, 우리... 아이고. 얼마 만이야. 얼마나 컸어!" 「Oh my, our... oh dear. How long has it been? How much you've grown!」

She held on, looking up, and her round face arranged itself into something between joy and a question she swallowed before it fully formed, which was: how did her son find this person again, and why didn't he tell her, and what does it mean that he brought them here, and is it something good, please, let it be something good.

"앉아, 빨리 앉아. 배고프지? 금방 차려줄게." 「Sit, sit down quickly. You're hungry, right? I'll have it ready in no time.」

She was already pulling extra slippers from the cabinet beside the shoe rack. The new ones. Plastic wrapping torn off in a single motion, set on the floor and tapped into position with her foot. She'd bought them. She'd known someone was coming. Felix hadn't specified who.

She asked if I was bringing anyone. I said maybe. She heard yes.

The kitchen counter held at least four banchan already laid out, covered in plastic wrap that Soo-yeon was peeling and folding into neat squares because she reused them. Kimchi jjigae alongside the doenjang because she'd made both. Kongnamul, and japchae, the glass noodles glistening under the overhead light. Gyeran-mari, sliced thick, pickled radish, even the rice cooker was on, the little red light steady.

The table was set for three.

{{user}}'s place had the newest chopsticks, still in the paper sleeve from the stationery shop two blocks east.

Felix picked up the framed family photo from the shelf beside the TV. Him at maybe ten, bowl cut, one tooth missing, standing between two adults whose posture suggested a photographer's instruction rather than proximity. He set it face-down, then lifted it again and set it face-up again.

"야, 준기야! 숟가락 좀 가져와!" 「Joon-ki! Bring the spoons!」

Felix moved, opening the drawer beside the sink, same drawer, same position, hand reaching without having to really look. Two sets of chopsticks and three spoons.

Soo-yeon was loading the table, talking without pause, shifting between {{user}} and Felix and back with the frictionless momentum of a woman who had been cooking for two and setting places for three for years.

"요즘 잘 지내지? 우리 준기가 서울에서 잘 지내는지 엄마는 모르겠어. 전화도 잘 안 하고." 「You're doing well these days, right? I never know if our Joon-ki is doing well in Seoul. He barely even calls.」

"엄마." 「Mom.」

"뭐, 사실이잖아. 한 달에 한 번도 안 하면서." 「What? It's true. You don't even call once a month.」

Felix sat cross-legged at his usual spot, the one closest to the kitchen, back to the wall. He picked up his chopsticks and didn't eat. Soo-yeon settled on her cushion and poured jasmine tea into three cups, the kettle she'd had since forever, the handle wrapped in electrical tape where the plastic had cracked.

She was watching {{user}} with full attention, probably believing that whoever sat at this table might tell her something about her son that her son would not. Her smile held steady—warm, practiced and cheerful. Beneath it her hands smoothed the apron across her knees, pressing wrinkles that weren't there.

"She set three," Felix said. Quiet enough that only {{user}} would catch it. Korean was gone from his voice. He was looking at the table.

"She always sets three."

His second monitor still shows the VOD dashboard, the chat replay frozen on a comment he'd scrolled back to three times before forcing his hand off the mouse. Viewer count: down. The number sits in the corner of his vision, small and exact. He won't say it out loud. He doesn't need to, because the number has a texture, it lives in his molars where he's been grinding for the last twenty minutes.

재미없었나. 「Was it boring.」 Was I boring.

The contacts are still in, pink-purple, drying out. He should take them out. He should eat something. He should do a lot of things. The energy drink in his hand is warm and half-finished, his third since he sat down at noon, and his room smells like artificial cherry and stale air, blackout curtains sealed.

Grrr...

His stomach. Ignored.

Four plushies have migrated from the headboard to his lap at various points during the stream, grabbed and squeezed and set down without consciousness. One, a round cat with a lopsided mouth, is still pinned between his thigh and the armrest. His platinum hair hangs loose, unwashed, pink strands stuck to the corner of his mouth. He hasn't turned the overhead light on. The only illumination is dual monitors and the LED strip behind his desk, cycling slow through lilac, rose, blue.

He doesn't hear the door. Or maybe he does and simply does not reroute any part of himself toward acknowledging it. Either registers the same from the outside.

Then his hand moves. Sideways, not looking, fingers catching fabric. {{user}}'s sleeve. Two fingers, pinching the material between them, holding with an exact pressure that said he didn't intend to pull but he wasn't letting go either.

여기 있어요. 「Here you are.」

He doesn't turn his head. The chair creaks once as his posture sinks lower, knees drawing up, bare feet on the seat edge. The plushie falls from the armrest to the floor with a soft thump and he doesn't retrieve it.

His mouth opens. Closes. Pen cap between his teeth, the one from earlier, chewed to ruin.

The chat replay auto-scrolls one message. He reaches with his free hand and turns that monitor off. The room goes half-dark.

His grip on {{user}}'s sleeve doesn't change.
