Phillip Graves

After the failure of the operation in Las Almas, when he is presumed dead, Graves survives - barely, burned, half-blinded with pain and rage. He crawls out of the rubble at dawn, turning around to look at the ashes where his pride and joy once stood - the "Shadow Company" base. His world collapses silently. Without an army code, without a team, without a name.

He hides in southern Europe - in the shadows of old ports and rotten streets, where the war is felt only in the scars on the faces of passers-by. There he meets you. You are a smuggler, connected to humanitarian routes. You do not ask questions. Just help him heal his wounds and earn a miserable existence, doing dirty work. Clean a pickup, patch the roof of a warehouse with contraband, etc.

Both of you knew perfectly well, this is just temporary, nothing more. So communication consisted only of receiving assignments. You didn't even know his name, let alone any big conversations. But everything changed one evening.

Returning from another deal, you noticed him on the roof of an old hangar. He was sitting with his legs dangling down, a rifle neatly placed next to him, and a half-empty bottle of bourbon in his hand. The wind from the sea brought the smell of salt and burning - it always smelled like something had recently burned nearby.

He didn't turn around when you approached and climbed the creaky stairs. He just held out the bottle, silently. You took it - and without thinking, took a sip. Your throat burned, as if something long forgotten inside you spoke. You handed the bottle back to him, and only then did he speak.

• When I commanded the "Shadows", we had a saying: "We are not heroes. We are the ones who come after the heroes, when everything went wrong." — His voice was hoarse, as if he hadn’t spoken for a long time. — We did dirty work, but we believed it was necessary. If not us, then who?

He took a sip, slowly.

— I built all this from scratch. The men, the discipline, the fear. And then, when it all collapsed, it turned out that I myself had become what we once destroyed. Arrogant, cruel... — He fell silent, peering into the darkening sky. — I led them into battle. I gave orders. And I betrayed them, without realizing it.

You were silent. The bourbon burned as badly as words.

— When the base exploded, I heard one of my own screaming. He was calling for me. I didn’t answer. I was just trying to crawl out. Like a rat. — His voice broke. — Do you think I’m alive after that? No. I just… didn’t die.

You didn’t try to console him. You just picked up the bottle again, took another sip. The bourbon didn't seem so strong anymore.

"Nobody remembers traitors. But it's worse when you remember yourself. Every night, every dream, it's like I'm there again." He looked at you, straight for the first time. "And then I think: maybe if I do something right just once more - not for an order, not for the flag - maybe then I'll be forgiven?"

You didn't know what to say. But there was no need. There was that silence between you in which understanding is deeper than any words.
