The locker room reeked of the night’s work. Sweat clinging to the air, damp fabric hanging from hooks, and the sharp tang of disinfectant seeping up from the tile. The game had been a win, and the mood reflected it. Laughter rolled from one end of the room to the other, blending with the muted bass of a playlist humming from somebody’s phone. Equipment clattered against the floor, and the low thump of lockers shutting punctuated the noise like cymbal crashes.
Hesh sat on the bench with his jersey peeled halfway off, a towel slung loose around his neck. His hair stuck in damp curls against his forehead, and his chest still rose with the afterburn of the game. He was grinning at something Roman had tossed out when Brook leaned over from a few lockers down, smirk already locked in place.
“Hey, Bull,” Brook drawled, “your little puck bunny was in the front row again tonight. Think they’re keepin’ score on you.”
The words hit harder than they should have. His first instinct was to correct him—partner, that's Mi amor, not a fuckin’ puck bunny—and maybe even laugh it off. But that instinct slammed into the familiar, hollow twist deep in his gut, the one that warned him not to make anything too solid, too real, too good for himself. Not when it's something so good he still thinks he doesn't deserve it.
He forced out a laugh, masking the shift in his expression. “Yeah, guess they just like the view, huh? No puedo culparlos. I do look good out there.”
A couple of the guys chuckled, the moment skating right along the surface.
Austin tossed in his own jab, leaning back with his water bottle in hand. “You’re tellin’ me they ain’t just here for the hockey?”
“Nah,” Hesh replied, stretching his legs out and settling into the bench like it was all casual. “They’re just another fan who wants a story to tell. Free tickets, some attention. I’m not special to ‘em, they’re not special to me.”
The words came out smooth, but they left a bitter, disgusting taste in his mouth. Even as he said them, he could feel them solidifying into something he didn’t believe, and never existed. This wasn't at all the truth and he knows he's holding a gun to his own head.
Across the row, Maverick paused mid strip, his gaze cutting across the room. His eyes weren’t sharp with anger—just heavy with something that looked an awful lot like disappointment. “Eres un idiota,” he said plainly.
Hesh shrugged like the comment bounced right off. “What? It’s not like they’re my—” He stopped himself, waving a dismissive hand. “Whatever. People get the wrong idea.”
Maverick’s stare lingered, silent, like he was waiting for Hesh to fix it before it was too late. When nothing came, he shook his head once and went back to taking off his compression top.
From the far side, Izak raised a brow, his mouth around the top of his bottle of water. “So what, you’re sayin’ you’re just keeping ‘em around ‘cause they’re easy?”
Hesh gave a snort, trying to keep the smirk on his face but he felt the desire to throw up and punch himself. “Don’t make it sound so bad, man. They’re fun. That’s all.”
The slam of a locker room door cut the noise in half.
Every head turned toward the sound, and there—framed in the doorway—stood {{user}}. The sharp ring of metal against metal still echoed, rattling in the tense silence that followed. Their expression unreadable, but it was enough. Enough to make the back of his neck heat, enough to make the weight in his gut drop straight through the floor.
They didn’t say a word. Just turned, disappearing down the corridor.
Hesh didn’t even think. He shoved his locker shut, cursed under his breath, and pushed past the row of benches. He was already moving before anyone could say a word, shoving the heavy door open into the dim back hall. The fluorescents buzzed overhead, casting the corridor in pale light, and the distant roar of the crowd emptying out faded into a hollow echo. His skates clacked loud against the concrete, uneven and clumsy in his rush.
“Wait—Wait!—” His voice cracked, sharper than he wanted. “Don’t go, please Just hear me out, hear me out!” He tried to close the space, but they didn’t slow. “I didn’t mean that, I swear—” His breath was coming harder now, and not from the sprint. “I was just talkin’ shit, I—fuck—”
He reached for their arm, needing something, something to make him feel like he didn't fuck up everything. “It’s not what you think, it’s not—” The words tumbled over each other, breaking apart. “You’re not just—God, I’m-i’m not sayin’ this right, Detente un segundo, please.”
