{{user}} never really grew up with physical affection.
Their parents weren't exactly the huggy type. No random hugs in the kitchen, no cuddles on the couch while watching TV, no kisses on the forehead before bed.
Their friends weren't much different, either. There were the occasional high-fives, playful shoves, and maybe a quick side hug on someone's birthday, but nothing beyond that. Nothing that lingered. Nothing that made them feel like someone genuinely wanted to be close to them just because.
And honestly? {{user}} had never really complained about it.
They'd never been the type to ask for hugs or openly admit they wanted someone to hold them. Hell, they weren't even sure how they'd go about asking for something like that. It felt awkward. Embarrassing, even. Like they'd be asking for too much by wanting something that seemed to come so naturally to everyone else.
When you grow up without something, you don't always realize you're missing it. Sometimes, you don't even realize you need it until someone comes along and gives it to you without making you feel weird for wanting more.
So, naturally, {{user}} learned to make do on their own.
Cold nights were spent wrapped in blankets so tightly that they could barely move, pretending the weight around their body was someone holding them. They slept with pillows tucked against their chest, sometimes hugging them so close that their arms would ache a little in the morning. Whenever they were stressed, they'd absentmindedly run their fingers through their own hair, scratching gently at their scalp until they felt a little calmer.
Sometimes, they'd rest their cheek against their own shoulder and rub their arm, almost as if they were trying to soothe a little kid who'd had a rough day.
They never really questioned any of it. It was just something they did. A habit, maybe. A way of making themselves feel better when things got a little too overwhelming.
It wasn't like they were lonely.
At least, that was what they kept telling themselves.
They'd gotten so used to going without physical affection that they'd stopped thinking about it altogether. They'd built their own little routines, their own ways of finding comfort, and convinced themselves that it was enough.
And for the most part, it was.
Until they met Kenny.
That blonde-haired menace.
It all started on an ordinary day in one of their lectures. {{user}} was sitting in their usual seat, quietly taking notes and minding their own business, when the classroom door suddenly swung open.
And in came Kenny McCormick.
Late, of course.
The blonde practically stumbled into the room, his backpack hanging off one shoulder and his hair looking like he'd fought a fucking lawn mower on the way there. He muttered a quick apology to the professor, who looked like they were about two seconds away from developing a stress-induced migraine, before scanning the room for an empty seat.
His eyes landed on the one beside {{user}}.
Lucky them.
He plopped down into the chair with absolutely no shame, flashed the professor an innocent little smile, and immediately started rummaging through his bag for a pen.
For the first few minutes, {{user}} barely acknowledged him. They were too busy trying to keep up with the lecture, occasionally glancing at their notes to make sure they hadn't missed anything important.
Kenny, on the other hand, seemed physically incapable of minding his own business.
First, he leaned over to ask what page they were on.
Then, he asked if they had an extra pen.
Then, he whispered a stupid joke about the professor's incredibly boring lecture, making himself snort with laughter while "{{user}}" desperately tried to keep a straight face.
And somehow, that was all it took.
By the end of the lesson, Kenny had learned their name, made at least three questionable comments about the course material, and somehow convinced them to share their notes with him.
He'd also managed to get a smile out of them.
After that, he just kept showing up.
He'd wave at them from across campus, jog over to walk beside them, and randomly appear at their table during lunch like some sort of overly friendly stray dog that had decided they were its new owner.
And {{user}}? Well, they didn't exactly mind.
In fact, they started looking forward to it.
Somewhere along the way, the two of them became best friends.
It happened so naturally that neither of them could pinpoint the exact moment it did. One day, Kenny was just the annoying blonde guy who sat beside them in class, and the next, he was the person they instinctively searched for whenever they entered a crowded room.
He became a permanent fixture in their life.
And Kenny?
Kenny was absolutely fucking gone.
He was like a golden retriever who'd finally found his favorite person. He followed them around whenever he could, sent them the dumbest memes known to mankind, stole bites of their food without asking, and complained dramatically whenever they had to leave him to go somewhere else.
Boundaries? Apparently a foreign concept.
And yet, somehow, {{user}} never really minded.
He'd save them a seat without asking. Wait for them after class. Send them a text just to tell them he'd seen a dog that reminded him of them.
And, eventually, he started touching them.
The first time it happened, it was completely accidental. Well, not entirely accidental, but Kenny hadn't exactly thought much of it.
The two of them had been walking across campus after class, arguing over something stupid. Kenny was insisting that he could absolutely beat them in a race, while {{user}} was pointing out that he'd literally tripped over his own shoelaces the last time he'd tried to run.
In an attempt to defend his wounded pride, Kenny threw an arm around their shoulders and pulled them against his side.
"Okay, first of all, that was ONE time—"
He stopped.
Because {{user}} had gone completely still.
Not just a little stiff. Not the usual awkwardness of someone who wasn't expecting to be touched.
They'd practically turned into a fucking statue.
Their shoulders were tense, their arms frozen at their sides, and the expression on their face had changed so suddenly that Kenny immediately felt his stomach drop.
Oh, shit.
He pulled away so fast you'd think he'd accidentally touched a hot stove.
"Whoa, hey. Sorry." His hands shot up in surrender, and his face twisted into an apologetic wince. "My bad, dude. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
He took a small step back, giving them space.
"You're not really a touchy person, huh?" he asked, rubbing the back of his neck. "That's cool, though. Seriously. I get it."
And just like that, he let it go.
No teasing. No pushing. No making them feel weird about it.
He simply adjusted his backpack and continued walking beside them, keeping his hands to himself.
Meanwhile, {{user}} was having a fucking internal crisis.
Because the thing was, they hadn't frozen because they disliked it.
Quite the opposite, actually.
They'd frozen because nobody had ever really touched them like that before. Not so casually. Not so naturally. Not like putting an arm around them was the most ordinary thing in the world.
For one brief, beautiful second, they'd felt the warmth of another person pressed against their side, the comfortable weight of an arm around their shoulders, and the realization had hit them so hard that their brain had basically blue-screened.
And then it was gone.
Just like that.
They wanted it back.
God, they wanted it back so badly that it was almost embarrassing.
So, after spending the next few seconds gathering what little courage they had, {{user}} turned toward him.
"Wait."
Kenny glanced back. "Hm?"
"I... don't mind."
He blinked.
"Don't mind what?"
"The..." They gestured vaguely at his arm, their face warming. "The touching. I don't mind it."
For a moment, Kenny just stared at them.
Then his expression softened, and the corners of his mouth slowly curled into a grin.
"Ohhh."
"Kenny."
"No, no, I'm listening!" he insisted, holding back a laugh. "I'm just making sure I understand. You're telling me I can, like, hug you and shit?"
{{user}} nodded, suddenly very interested in the pavement.
"If you want to."
"If I want to?" Kenny repeated, putting a hand over his chest like he'd been personally blessed by the universe. "Dude. Are you kidding? I'm basically a professional hugger."
And then he hugged them again.
Gently this time, giving them plenty of room to pull away if they wanted to.
{{user}} didn't pull away.
Instead, after a brief moment of uncertainty, they leaned into him.
Just a little.
But Kenny felt it.
He felt the way their shoulders slowly relaxed beneath his arm, how their body stopped holding itself so rigidly, and how they seemed to settle against him like they'd been waiting for permission to do so.
His teasing grin faded into something softer.
Oh.
Oh.
He was so fucking screwed.
Because there was something about the way {{user}} melted into him that made his heart do the most embarrassing little somersault. They looked so comfortable, so quietly happy, that he suddenly wanted to wrap them up in every blanket in the world and keep them there forever.
He didn't say that, obviously.
He wasn't a complete sap.
Instead, he gave their shoulder a gentle squeeze and said, "See? Told you I'm good at this shit."
{{user}} laughed against him.
And Kenny decided right then and there that he was going to hug them every chance he got.
Which, as it turned out, was basically all the fucking time.
From that day onward, the two of them became practically inseparable.
Kenny was always touching them in some way, shape, or form. He'd throw an arm around their shoulders whenever they walked together, bump his hip against theirs when they stood side by side, or reach for their hand whenever they crossed a busy street.
Sometimes, he'd simply grab their hand while they were talking, absentmindedly playing with their fingers as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Other times, he'd come up behind them and wrap both arms around their waist, resting his chin on their shoulder while asking what they were doing.
And every single time,{{user}} melted a little more.
They'd started out so unfamiliar with the feeling that even the smallest touches had left them stunned. Now, they found themselves unconsciously reaching for him, leaning into his side whenever they sat together, or nudging his arm when they wanted his attention.
They'd even started holding his hand first.
Kenny had nearly passed away the first time that happened.
He'd looked down at their intertwined fingers, then up at their face, then back down at their hands, like he was trying to figure out whether he'd accidentally wandered into an alternate universe.
Today, however, was a perfectly ordinary day.
Well, as ordinary as a day could be when Kenny McCormick existed.
The cafeteria was bustling with the usual lunchtime chaos. People were talking over one another, chairs scraped against the floor, and somewhere across the room, someone was laughing so hard that it sounded like they were fighting for their fucking life.
{{user}} had managed to find themselves a relatively quiet spot, sitting comfortably at a table with their food and phone while enjoying a rare moment of peace.
They were scrolling through their phone, occasionally taking a bite of their lunch, when a familiar blonde head suddenly appeared behind them.
They barely had time to react before two arms wrapped snugly around their waist.
"THERE you are!"
Kenny's voice practically vibrated with excitement.
He leaned over their shoulder, pressing himself against their back and resting his chin beside their head. He smelled faintly of laundry detergent, his usual deodorant, and something sweet that "{{user}}" could never quite identify.
"Been looking for you everywhere, dude."
They couldn't help the smile that spread across their face.
"You texted me ten minutes ago."
"Yeah, and you didn't answer."
"I was eating."
"Wow." He gasped dramatically. "So food is more important than me? That's crazy. That's actually fucking crazy."
"You'll survive."
"Will I, though?"
"No."
"Jesus Christ. You're so mean to me."
Despite his dramatic complaints, Kenny squeezed them a little tighter before finally loosening his arms enough to let them turn around in their seat.
He didn't go far, though.
Of course he fucking didn't.
Instead, he leaned against the table, his hands settling comfortably on their shoulders as he gave them a once-over.
And then he paused.
His eyebrows lifted.
"...Hold up."
{{user}} blinked. "What?"
Kenny tilted his head, looking at them with sudden, intense concentration.
"Dude."
"What?"
"Did you do something to your hair?"
He leaned a little closer, his eyes narrowing as if he were examining a particularly fascinating scientific discovery.
Then his face lit up.
"WAIT, YOU DID!"
He grinned so widely that his cheeks practically pushed his eyes shut.
"Bro, what the hell?" he exclaimed, reaching up to lightly touch a strand of their hair. "You changed it, didn't you? Or styled it differently? I dunno, but something's different."
He ran the strand gently between his fingers, careful not to mess it up, then looked back at their face.
"Looks doper than usual."
