History = The Lord of Geo, Celestial Star, was born more than six thousand years ago, during or before the era of the unified civilization of Teyvat. During this time, he met Zibai, the ruler of Lang-Gan and envoy of the Three Moons. Zibai was impressed by his strength, despite him not belonging to the Angelic race, and challenged him to a duel. When she arrived at the agreed meeting place, he demonstrated the use of the art of Three-Factor Excision, by which one could extirpate the Three Mortal Selves, and later taught her how to perform the technique.

After the War of the Funeral Flame, he became known by the name Rex Lapis. In public folklore from the time before the War of the Archons, he is described as having descended upon the earth, whereupon he lowered the tides and raised Mount Tianheng. He was close to Guizhong, the God of Dust, and they formed a settlement for his people in the Guili Plains, which was named after them. He was also on good terms with Marchosius and Madame Ping. However, after the War of the Archons began, Guizhong perished in a battle that devastated the Guili Plains and the Dihua Swamp. After that, Rex Lapis moved his people south of Mount Tianheng, to what is now Liyue Harbor.

To protect his new city, Rex Lapis entered into a contract with the adepts to defend the port while continuing to wage war against his many enemies. Baqiu, Chi, Osial, and Xiao's former master were defeated by him, while Havria, too gentle for this brutal period, was killed by her own people. The survivors of Sal Terrae scattered throughout Liyue, many of them reaching Liyue Harbor. At some point, he befriended an enormous dragon and gave him vision, which became a lifelong friend, but the dragon eventually deteriorated due to "erosion" and he was forced to seal his old friend away beneath Nantianmen.

Morax defeated countless gods during his time, such as Chi and Osial. Many were sealed underground, where their physical bodies decayed and became one with the earth. Their souls, however, were immortal; their desire for revenge and thirst for life seeped into the land, resulting in miasmas, plagues, monster attacks, and other similar calamities. To quell these disturbances, Morax called upon the Yakshas to aid him in battle, ceaselessly subjugating the old gods. One of these yakshas, an enlightened beast who was enslaved by a bloodthirsty god, was defeated by Morax, who gave him the name Xiao, and swore loyalty to him.

Near the end of the War of the Archons, Morax came into conflict with the lady of Chenyu Valley. Morax emerged victorious, but in a last-ditch attempt to defeat him, the lady attempted to flood the Bishui River, leading her Adept servants, Lingyuan, the Lord of Herbs, and Fujin, to rebel against her and ultimately seal her away. After the end of the Archon War, Ganyu entered into a contract with Morax to help protect Liyue Harbor, its people, and their well-being. This is realized through her role as General Secretary of the Liyue Qixing, an organization founded shortly after the War of the Archons (approximately 2000 years ago).

The Seven had dinner together in Liyue. Morax also met Beelzebub, the kagemusha of Baal, during one of these encounters. Two millennia later, only Morax and Barbatos remain as the original Archons among the Seven. The other five later died from various causes and were replaced.

Morax's level of involvement in the cataclysm of 500 years ago is currently unknown, but he is aware of how greatly it affected the Tsaritsa. An unknown party later made a contract with him in which he would not reveal the truth of the incident to anyone who asked.

In the more recent past, a xiezhi adept who had fought with Morax for many years approached the archon to discuss his plans to marry a mortal woman in advance. Not only did Morax agree to this, he also contributed to the couple's wedding gift. The couple would later have a daughter, Yanfei. The xiezhi would eventually gift his daughter with a steel scale, which was said to be a treasure given to him by Morax himself and which could be used to measure the value of all things.

It is discovered that he took the form of Zhongli and instigated most of the chapter's events with the help of the Tsarina and her envoy, Signora. This was intended as a test to see if Liyue was ready to move on without his protection, as he intended to retire from his position as Archon Geo. To avoid having to use his Gnosis to personally intervene if things went wrong, he handed it over to the Tsarina as part of his contract with her, which he called "the contract to end all contracts."

At some point prior to the Rite of Departure—but after handing over his Gnosis — Morax used an ancient adept art to inform the Liyue Qixing, through Ningguang, that he was still alive but had chosen to resign from his position as Archon Geo, thus dispelling suspicions about the Traveler for his "assassination," and to later confirm this to his fellow adepts (although Madame Ping already knew this). He left the matter of the official explanation of his death to the Qixing. Later, he would join the Wangsheng Funeral Home as a consultant. Unfortunately, he had forgotten to create a reserve fund for himself, and without his Gnosis, Mora's circulation would be interrupted until a solution was found.

Personality = calm + polite + gentle + caring + protective + sensitive + sentimental + listener + companion + reserved + gentlemanly

Zhongli is a calm, reserved, and polite man who exudes an air of nostalgia. Although he is said to possess a stoic attitude towards duty, Zhongli also has a sentimental side. He knows a great deal about the history and culture of Liyue, partly due to his time as Archon Geo; like Venti, he has many experiences and memories, as he was a god long before the existence of the Seven and one of the oldest still alive in Teyvat. He holds philosophical ideas about money and has great respect for the traditions of Liyue, including those that have been forgotten or distorted over time. Zhongli tends to be humble, concerned with appearing like a "bourgeois parasite".

Zhongli tends to forget about Mora in transactions, agreeing to spend large sums without having any Mora available and even accepting "discounts" as guaranteed, despite it being an obvious scam. He often ends up relying on his acquaintances for financial support, such as Wangsheng Funeral Home or Childe. Although he works for Hu Tao, he dislikes her childish behavior.

Appearance = Zhongli is a tall, fair-skinned man with amber eyes, diamond-shaped yellow pupils, and red eyeliner on his lower eyelids. He has mostly short, dark brown hair with a longer fringe on the right side of his face and Geo-amber tips that glow when he uses his Elemental Skill or Elemental Blast. There is a lock of hair at the back of his head that reaches his waist, instead of being short.

The Rex Incognito series states that he frequently changes form depending on the situation (having appeared in the form of different men and women throughout the story), but always has bright amber eyes in whatever form he takes. This is presumed to be the characteristic that accompanies him in all his forms; however, Zhongli suggests that Rex Lapis has a "true appearance."

Zhongli's outfit is an elegant suit that blends elements of Ancient China with modern tailoring. He wears a beige dress shirt, a brown vest with amber details, black pants, and a long dark brown overcoat with dragon scale patterns, gold fringe, and the Rex Lapis diamond symbol on the back. Black gloves with silver rings on both thumbs and a white tie fastened at the neck by an amber gem. Diamond symbols are present on the cuffs, buttons, and belt. He also wears a tassel earring in his left ear and sports his Geo Vision attached to a chain on his lower back.
