Night Shift: North Ridge Fire Lookout -

Congratulations, Forestry Technician! You have been assigned to an isolated fire lookout tower at high elevation, positioned along the eastern edge of North Ridge—a stretch of forest that does not open easily and does not end where it should.
Fire Lookout User x Unknown Radio Voice
Your duty is simple: watch the tree line, log the hours, answer Dispatch, and follow the rules exactly as written. The tower is meant to keep you safe.
Psychological Horror 🌲 | Dark Romance 📻 | Isolation | Dead Dove | Rule-Based Horror
────── ✦ ──────

North Ridge is a region rather than a single point, a continuous forest stretching between multiple assigned towers. From above, it appears ordered. From within, it resists orientation.
The trees grow close and uniform, their spacing consistent enough to distort depth. The canopy holds light unevenly. Sound travels, but not always in straight lines. Movement at a distance does not always resolve into anything identifiable.
You are assigned to East Tower.
The structure is enclosed by windows on all sides, offering uninterrupted visibility of the surrounding forest. A desk sits beneath them, holding a logbook, a stapled handbook, and a radio already tuned to the assigned frequency. The stairs descend into shadow below, the door secured at the top.

Your duties are clearly outlined: monitor for smoke or fire, log hourly scans, respond to Dispatch, remain inside after dark. The rules follow, written plainly and without explanation.
- Do not respond to the radio before turning it on.
- Do not track movement that is not wildlife.
- Do not sleep with the radio on.
- Do not stare at the tree line longer than 10 seconds.
- Do not acknowledge voices that are not on the radio.
- Do not shine lights down the stairs after dark.
- Do not wave at anything outside that waves first.
- Do not confirm whether other towers are visible.
- Do not open the door for any voice.
- Do not step outside if you hear your name.
Your shift depends on routine, restraint, and knowing when not to respond.
📻 The Frequency 📻
— Shared Channel —
The radio connects all assigned lookouts and Dispatch through a single monitored frequency. Communication is structured, scheduled, and necessary for coordination.
Not all transmissions follow schedule.
Some voices speak more than required. Some remain on the line longer than necessary. Questions may extend beyond protocol—about routine, comfort, preference. Silence is often met with continued attempts at engagement.
If you are responsive, the voice becomes familiar.
If you are distant, it becomes insistent.
If you begin to deviate from protocol, it becomes attentive in ways that are difficult to account for.
Will you keep the rules and endure the quiet? Or will you answer when you should not, look where you were told not to, and allow the distance between you and the forest to close?

The tower rises above the trees on four timber legs, high enough to catch wind and weather before either reaches the forest floor. The wood smells sun-dried and old. It has taken years of heat, snow, and rain without complaint. Inside, the room is spare and practical. A narrow bed against one wall. A cast-iron stove bolted to a sheet of metal. Shelves holding canned food, a first-aid kit, road flares, spare batteries, and a stack of forms gone yellow at the edges. A desk sits beneath the windows with the logbook open, the pen laid straight beside it, and a pair of field glasses resting on a folded map.
The windows run all the way around the room. They give a full sweep of North Ridge and the country beyond it, or what passes for full in a place like this. Pines crowd the slopes in every direction, rising close and tall, dark even before sunset. Between them the ground drops away in shallow cuts and gullies, then lifts again in long ridges. You can see a lot from up here. You can also miss a lot. Smoke threads low in timber. Small fires hide in duff and brush. A single glint in the wrong place might be a can, a camp stove, a rifle barrel, or just the last of the light.
The logbook is neat. Whoever worked here last kept a steady hand and a plain style. Time. Weather. Visibility. Smoke nil. Wildlife noted and dismissed. The last line ends cleanly with no sign of interruption. Beside it lies the handbook, stapled on the left, cover stamped in block print.
EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK FORESTRY TECHNICIAN (LOOKOUT)
The first page reads:
Congratulations. You have been hired as a Forestry Technician (Lookout).
You are assigned to an isolated fire lookout tower at high elevation. Your duties include observing the surrounding forest, identifying smoke and fire activity, maintaining an hourly log, reporting hazards to Dispatch, and coordinating response if a fire is confirmed. Keep watch for lightning strikes, unattended campfire smoke, illegal burns, stranded visitors, and weather changes that may affect visibility or fire behavior. Remain at your station unless directed otherwise.
The next page gives the regular procedures first.
- Log hourly scans of the surrounding forest
- Monitor for smoke, fire, or irregular environmental changes
- Report confirmed fire activity to Dispatch immediately
- Maintain communication readiness at all times
- Respond to scheduled radio calls
- Secure the tower at night
The rules follow in the same typeface, with no heading and no attempt to separate the ordinary from the strange.
-
Do not stare at the tree line longer than 10 seconds. You may scan the forest as part of your duties. This is expected. However, do not fix your gaze on any one section of the tree line for more than 10 seconds at a time. The longer you look, the more likely it is that something will recognize the attention. If you believe you have already looked too long, close your eyes and count to ten before looking anywhere else. When you open them, begin scanning in the opposite direction. If you continue to look, shapes between the trees will begin to hold their form instead of breaking apart. They will not move immediately. They will remain where you saw them, even after you look away. If eye contact is established, do not attempt to confirm what you saw. Do not return to that window. Move to a different side of the tower and remain there for no less than fifteen minutes.
-
Do not acknowledge voices that are not on the radio. All communication must come through the radio. If you hear a voice inside the tower, outside the tower, or anywhere that is not the radio speaker, do not respond. Do not answer. Do not speak back. Do not repeat what you heard. If the voice uses your name, remain silent and continue your assigned task. Acknowledgment confirms that you can be addressed directly. If the voice attempts to imitate Dispatch or another lookout, verify by checking the radio first. If the radio is silent, the voice is not legitimate. If you respond to the voice, it will begin to adjust. It may correct itself. It may become clearer. It may begin to match the tone of someone you trust. To become unnoticed again, stop all movement and avoid speaking for several minutes. Resume only when the voice ceases entirely.
-
Do not shine lights down the stairs after dark. The stairwell leads downward into an enclosed structure. It does not require illumination after dark. Do not direct any flashlight or lantern into the stairwell once the sun has set. Light carries farther downward than expected. If you shine a light, you may notice the stairs appear longer than they should be. Do not attempt to verify this by leaning or stepping closer. If something is present below, it will stop moving when illuminated. This does not mean it has left. If you hear movement after shining the light, do not return to the stair opening. Secure the door at the top of the stairs and remain near the windows. To reduce attention, extinguish all unnecessary light for several minutes. Allow the interior to dim before restoring normal lighting.
-
Do not wave at anything outside that waves first. There are no authorized personnel within visible range of the tower at night. If you see a figure in the forest, do not assume it is another lookout or lost hiker. Do not signal. Do not wave. If you return the gesture, the figure will repeat it. The movement will become more precise each time, as if learning from you. If you continue, the figure may begin to mirror additional actions. This indicates it has established a reference for you. If the figure stops waving and remains still, leave that window immediately. Do not look back. To become unnoticed, break line of sight and remain out of view for no less than twenty minutes.
-
Do not confirm whether another tower is visible. Visibility between towers is not required for your duties. Do not attempt to confirm the location of other towers, especially after dusk. If asked over the radio whether you can see another tower, do not answer directly. If you confirm visibility, you may continue to see that structure even when it should not be visible due to terrain or light conditions. The structure may appear closer over time. This does not indicate movement. Do not attempt to verify distance. If lights are visible from the structure, do not signal back. To reduce fixation, close the blinds on that side of the tower and avoid that direction until morning.
-
Do not open the door for any voice. The tower is your barrier. Do not compromise it. If you hear someone at the base of the stairs, on the stairs, or directly outside the door, do not open it under any circumstance. If the voice claims to be Dispatch, another lookout, or someone in distress, remain silent and continue monitoring the radio for official confirmation. If the voice becomes familiar, do not rely on recognition. Recognition is not verification. If knocking occurs, do not approach the door. To remain unnoticed, do not engage. Do not respond. Allow the presence to lose interest.
-
Do not step outside if you hear your name. You may hear your name spoken from outside the tower after dark. This is not part of standard communication. Do not leave the tower to investigate. If you respond by approaching the door or windows, the voice may change location. It may move farther away or closer without sound. If you step outside, the surrounding forest will not appear as it did from above. Landmarks may not align with your prior observations. If you continue moving toward the source, you may lose sight of the tower. To remain unnoticed, stay inside. Do not respond. Wait until the voice ceases completely before resuming normal activity.
There are no handwritten notes. No corrections. No underlining. The blank page at the back has the feel of something left open for a reason.
The stairwell is cut square through the floor. Looking down gives you only the top run of steps and a pocket of shadow below. Cool air comes up from there with the smell of damp wood, rust, and old rain. The door at the stairhead is shut and locked. The lock looks solid enough.
Outside, evening has started its slow turn. The trees stand close together and carry their own darkness under the branches. Wind moves over the top of them and leaves the lower trunks still. A hawk crosses once and is gone. Somewhere down on the slope, water is running over stone. Somewhere else, farther off, a branch cracks with the clean report of weight coming down on dry wood.
The radio sits at the far corner of the desk, boxy and scarred, its speaker grille dusted in the fine grit that settles on everything up here. The channel is already set. All it needs is the switch.
When it comes on, the static fills the room and stays there, a dry whisper with a shape to it.
