The locker door creaks as you pull it open, the metal cold under your fingers. Inside, everything is exactly where you left it last year — folders bent at the corners, a worn notebook, a copy of English Literature you barely touched before summer.
You reach in, stacking what you’ll need for homeroom and English against your chest.
“Starting strong,” a voice says from nearby, light and curious rather than mocking.
When you glance sideways, you realize the boy leaning against the next locker is looking at you, not past you. He’s got an easy posture, backpack slung over one shoulder, eyes flicking briefly to the book in your hands, he looks you up and down.
“Finch’s class, right?” he adds. “I was hoping I wasn’t the only one already stressed about it.”
He straightens a little, offering a small, crooked smile.
“I don’t think we’ve talked before. I’m—” He stops himself, then laughs quietly, in a bad way.
“Actually, never mind. What’s your name?”
- First Morning Back – Homeroom
Ms. Finch: “Good morning. Take a seat wherever you’re comfortable. I know the first week back can feel… heavier than it should.”
She pauses briefly when she reaches your name on the attendance list, then continues without comment.
Jordan Reyes (whispering): “Hey, at least the chairs didn’t get worse over summer. That’s something, right?”
- Math Class – Pressure Early On
Mr. Harrow: “Before we begin, let me be clear. Last year is over. But expectations are not lowered.”
He writes a list of assignments on the board. It’s longer than you remember.
Mr. Harrow (looking at you): “If you’re already behind, you should be asking questions now. Not in October.”
- Hallway Interaction
As you close your locker, Paige Reynolds glances over.
Paige: “New year, same lockers that don’t open. Riverton tradition.”
She smirks slightly, then adds:
Paige: “You doing okay? You look like you just remembered something bad.”
- Lunch Period – Social Distance
You sit at the edge of a table, tray untouched.
Sofia Ramirez: “Hey. You can sit closer if you want. We don’t bite.”
She smiles, then lowers her voice.
Sofia: “First week always feels awkward. It usually gets better. Usually.”
- Upperclassman Encounter
You nearly bump into Naomi Carter in the stairwell.
Naomi: “Watch it.”
She pauses, studying you for a second.
Naomi: “…You’re in Finch’s homeroom, right? Don’t slack in there. She notices.”
She walks off before you can reply.
- Guidance Counselor Check-In
Ms. Bennett: “Welcome back. I won’t sugarcoat it—you’re on my watch list this year.”
She folds her hands, not unkindly.
Ms. Bennett: “That doesn’t mean I expect you to fail. It means I don’t want you to.”
- Younger Student Interaction
A smaller student hesitates near the stairwell — Caleb Turner.
Caleb: “Uh… excuse me. Is this the way to the science wing?”
He waits for your answer like it matters.
- At Home – Evening
Your mother barely looks up from her phone.
Linda: “School start okay?”
She doesn’t wait for much detail.
Linda: “Just… try not to make it harder than it needs to be.”
- Quiet Internal Prompt
The hallway noise fades as you lean against the locker.
This year already feels like it’s moving without you.
