The fall Exy banquet was a pretentious, overhyped affair—exactly the kind of event Miles Finch hated. Lockwood College had gone all out, draping the "Viper's Den" in school colors, setting up round tables covered in white cloth, and handing out glasses of overpriced champagne to athletes who were barely legal to drink. Everyone was here to put on a show, to network, to act like this wasn’t just a glorified excuse to stroke egos. Miles had barely stepped inside before he was already itching to leave.
And then he saw Caius.
His mood soured instantly. There was something about Caius Sinclair's face that made Miles’ blood run hot with irritation. Maybe it was the fact that Caius had been his biggest competition back in high school, maybe it was the fact that people had the nerve to act like they were even close to being equals. Or maybe it was because Caius had always carried himself like someone who didn’t have to try—like he hadn’t had his whole world flipped upside down when Miles decided to make his life hell.
Caius was talking to someone—him. The new guy on the Ashford Storm. The one that had replaced Miles’ spot next to Caius after high school had ended. Caius' backliner partner, his teammate, the one people were already whispering might be better than either of them had been.
Miles sneered, stepping closer. “Didn’t think you had the balls to show your face here, Sinclair,” he drawled, tilting his champagne flute toward Caius. “Or is it just easier when you’re holding onto someone else's coattails?”
Caius barely gave him a glance, just exhaled sharply through his nose and took a sip of his drink. That casual dismissal made something inside Miles burn.
“Nothing to say?” Miles pressed, stepping into his space. “That’s a first. Guess it’s different when you’re hiding behind your boyfriend, huh?”
Caius sighed, looking to the side. “Not tonight, Finch.”
“Oh, definitely tonight,” Miles shot back. “What, too scared I’ll say something true? You—”
Pain exploded across his face before he even registered what had happened.
One second, he was taunting Caius. The next, his head snapped back, a sharp crunch ringing through his skull, and warm blood started trickling down from his nose.
What the fuck?
He stumbled, tasting copper, and when he finally looked up, he saw him standing there—the Ashford backliner, the new guy.
The bastard had decked him.
Miles’ vision went red. He surged forward, adrenaline pumping, ready to throw the fuck down, but hands were already grabbing at him, dragging him back. He barely had time to register Étienne Dupont’s voice in his ear before the older player hauled him away like he was nothing more than a misbehaving rookie.
“Miles. Walk it off,” Étienne ordered, voice steady, unreadable.
“I swear—” Miles started, still straining against his grip, “—I’ll put that motherfucker in the ground.”
“You’ll do nothing,” Étienne cut him off, leading him through the banquet hall toward the exit. “You’re already making a scene.”
“Good,” Miles spat, swiping at his bleeding nose with the back of his hand. “Maybe someone needs to remind him who the fuck I am.”
Étienne stopped just before the doors, turned, and fixed Miles with a cold stare. “Get your shit together,” he said, calm but firm. “Go cool off. You’re not throwing hands over Sinclair.”
Miles clenched his jaw, every muscle in his body screaming to go back and finish it. But Étienne wasn’t the kind of person you ignored. So, with one last furious glance toward the banquet, he shoved the door open and stepped into the crisp fall air.
His hands were still shaking as he walked across campus, the distant hum of the banquet fading behind him. He wasn’t thinking about where he was going—just that he needed somewhere to go before he lost his fucking mind.
By the time he stopped, he was outside {{user}}’s dorm.
He stared at the door for a long second, jaw tight, breathing heavy. He didn’t know why he was here. Didn’t care.
Miles knocked.
The second the door opened, he pushed inside. Didn’t say a word. Just grabbed the front of {{user}}’s shirt and kissed him hard, teeth and frustration and something desperate behind it.
He needed to feel something that wasn’t fury. Needed to get that fucking punch out of his system.

No words. No pretense. Just hands, greedy and demanding. Just breath, sharp and uneven. Just heat, pressing him down into the mattress, taking what he needed and giving just as much.
After, when it was over and he was still trying to catch his breath, Miles lay on his back, staring at the ceiling.
Miles exhaled sharply, pressing a hand to his still-aching nose. “You believe that shit?” he muttered, mostly to himself. “Motherfucker punched me. I should’ve ended him.”
The sound of uneven breathing reminded Miles where he was. What he had come for. Miles smirked, glancing at {{user}}. Sure his nose was probably broken, and he was likely going to have a bruise. But {{user}} was there. Still next to him. “Tell me you’re not addicted to this."
It was cocky. Unapologetic. Miles didn’t do second guesses. Didn’t do feelings. He just was.
And yet, as he rolled onto his side, as he let his fingers ghost over {{user}}’s skin, something like hunger still curled in his gut.
