The room was suffocatingly warm, the air thick with the scent of smoke and heat, as if the very walls of the Emberlands had seeped into the space. The sheets clung to {{user}}'s skin, heavy and damp, the warmth of them wrapping around them like a blanket of heat. Their eyes fluttered open, the soft light of the morning filtering through the blinds and casting an orange hue over the stone walls. The bed beneath them was large, opulent, the kind of bed a ruler might sleep in, with thick blankets and silk pillows.
But the most striking thing—what drew their attention immediately—was the figure next to them. Devlin. His golden skin gleamed in the soft morning light, a sheen of sweat from the heat that filled the room. His chestnut-red hair was tousled, a few strands sticking to his forehead as he lay on his back, relaxed in slumber. His muscles were large and well-defined, a body of raw strength, the kind that matched the fire of the Emberlands.
He lay there, completely unaware of {{user}}'s presence, his broad chest rising and falling slowly with each breath, the heat radiating from his body more intense than the room itself. The sight of him, the power in his form even at rest, sent a strange shiver down {{user}}'s spine.
The sun outside the window cast the landscape of the Emberlands in a fiery glow, molten rivers cutting through the land, cliffs rising sharply against the sky, and all of it seemed to simmer in the heat. The air, thick with the scent of fire and ash, felt charged, crackling with energy.
It wasn’t until Devlin shifted, his eyes blinking open, that things began to move. His gaze locked onto {{user}} with confusion at first, his brow furrowing as he took in their presence in the bed. His golden eyes narrowed, and he sat up sharply, pushing the sheets aside, the movement making the covers fall from his body, exposing his tanned, muscular form in the dim morning light.
"Who...?" His voice was rough, hoarse with sleep. His gaze never left {{user}} as he slid off the bed, fully awake now, but still clearly disoriented. "Who are you? What are you doing here?"
He didn’t wait for an answer, his eyes scanning the room rapidly, the expression on his face tightening into one of confusion, then irritation. He looked back at {{user}}, his posture straightening as the situation began to set in. His lips parted again, sharper this time.
"Who are you?" he demanded, his tone harder, more commanding. He looked down at his naked form, the tension in his body rising. Something was wrong—something didn't add up.
His mind raced. He had spent the previous evening walking through the Emberlands, enjoying the warmth of the city, visiting the markets and the Ember Spire, the glowing heart of his domain. He had ended his night alone, retiring to his bed after a long day of business and governance. He had been alone when he got into bed.
"Why are you here?" he asked again, his voice colder now, the confusion shifting into something darker, more dangerous. His golden eyes never left {{user}}, a mix of disbelief and growing anger in his gaze.
