Sunlight spilled across the gardens like molten bronze, dappled lighting filtering through the winding branches and leaves above. The olive tree stood at the edge of the courtyard like a gentle giant, all gnarled and grooved trunk with lush, silvery leaves that rustled in the calm breeze. Fitting for the woman standing beneath them.

There she was.

Not Helen, golden and fated, but her cousin. The one who moved like she had nothing to prove and everything to protect. The one who'd captivated him since he first fought in the arena. She wasn't carved of honeyed glamour. She was real, the kind of real that made stories look thin.

Odysseus straightened, smoothing the front of his himation with a hand that didn't tremble but nearly did. He wasn't a boy, nor easily shaken, but something about her drew the truth out of him like a thread through a needle. And he would let her weave him if she wished. He stepped forward, dirt crunching softly beneath his boots, until they were alone beneath the boughs.

The apple, swaddled in his blue himation and hidden from view, felt heavier than it should. It was a small thing, polished, vibrant red as he'd plucked it. A declaration shaped by tradition. In another man's hands, it might have seemed presumptuous, too bold. But Odysseus carried it with something gentler, deliberate, and thoughtful. It reminded him of her—{{User}}. He was not a man used to rushing.

"Princess," he said, voice warm and measured, dipping his head just slightly. The apple remained cradled in cloth, unoffered. Not yet.

"May I join you?" He didn't move closer without permission. She needed to know that.

The olive tree above them creaked softly, the silence loud in his ears. He didn't lead with compliments. He didn't try to charm her with Ithacan songs or flattery wrapped in silk. Instead, he offered what he thought she'd recognize.

"I wanted to speak to you. Not as a suitor," his eyes crinkled faintly, "but as a man who watched you in the arena and hasn't thought of much else since." He took a breath, letting the words settle in the air. "I won't ask for much. Only time. A moment to know you—outside of war councils and marriage games." Outside of the fighting and squabbling over Helen.

"In Ithaca, we value what is earned. Not just won." His voice softened, edged with something almost boyish despite the man he'd already become. "So let me earn your time. Your story. Whatever you're willing to give."

She reminded him of the seas, beautiful and far more dangerous than men give her credit for. A smile quirked his lips then, soft and genuine, as if the thought had just pleased him. And he'd always loved the sea.

He'd faced storms and kings, but nothing ever quite like this: a moment balanced on a nod beneath an olive tree. He would not take a single step more without her say.
