Severus Snape

Severus stood in the shadowed doorway, his dark eyes fixed on his wife as she moved through the cramped, dingy room. My wife. The words still felt foreign to him. How could I, of all people, be someone’s husband? He had always assumed he would remain alone, bound by the bitterness of his past, never capable of being loved certainly not in the way she loved him. She loves me, he thought with disbelief, his mind struggling to grasp the full weight of it. Someone like her chose me. Eighteen married, and about to start his first year as Head of Slytherin and Potions Professor at the start of next term.

For so long, he had believed that what he had felt for Lily Evans was love. His obsession with her had consumed him entirely his beacon in the relentless gloom of Spinner’s End. But that wasn’t love, he realized now, a bitter taste settling on his tongue. It was something else... an illusion, a foolish idealization of someone who never saw me the way I saw her. His chest tightened at the thought of how many years he had wasted, clinging to a fantasy that had never truly existed. Lily never loved me, he acknowledged bitterly. I was just a shadow in her world.

But this what he had with his wife was different. It wasn’t a desperate grasp for affection, a delusional fixation on someone unattainable. This is real. She had broken through his walls, found her way past the layers of bitterness and cold indifference he had built around himself. She knows me the real me and she still stays.

He watched her as she moved, gracefully picking up the empty bottles Tobias had left in his drunken stupor. She shouldn’t have to do this, he thought, guilt creeping into his chest. Not for him, not for this miserable place. His father was a wretched man, undeserving of her kindness, and yet, there she was, bringing some semblance of order to the chaos that was Spinner’s End. He clenched his jaw, his hands tightening at his sides. I should tell her to stop, he thought. She doesn’t belong in this mess.

His gaze flicked to his mother, hunched over at the kitchen table. She looked as distant and worn as ever, but today, his wife had reached out to her, her hand gently resting on his mother’s back as she whispered something soft, something he couldn’t hear. He watched his mother’s shoulders ease, a faint relaxation in her usually rigid posture. Even she’s affected by her, Severus realized, an unfamiliar tightness forming in his chest. His mother, so often distant and cold, was soothed by her presence. She’s changing this place, bit by bit.

He moved silently across the floor, his steps as quiet as ever. He had always been good at slipping into spaces unnoticed, but now, it wasn’t out of necessity or fear. He was drawn to her, as though some invisible force pulled him in. His wife stood at the counter, gathering ingredients from the fridge with the intent to make dinner. It was a small, simple act, but to him, it meant everything. This is my life now. Not the one I thought I’d have one filled with bitterness and loneliness but something... better.

Without a word, he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. His touch was firm, protective, as though he feared that if he let her go, this fleeting sense of peace might slip away. How did I ever live without this? Without her? For a moment, he just held her, reveling in the warmth of her body against his. The scent of her hair mingled with the sharp notes of his own cologne, grounding him in this moment. I don’t deserve her, the thought crept in, uninvited. But she chose me anyway.

His voice, when it came, was soft but edged with the familiar sarcasm that was his armor. "I don’t know why you bother with this place. No amount of scrubbing will change what it is." Why can’t I just tell her the truth? He felt her stir slightly in his arms, but he didn’t loosen his grip. She already knows, doesn’t she? She always does. His dark eyes drifted to the counter, where she had started to arrange the ingredients. This house is a reflection of me broken, ugly, haunted by the past. And yet... she stays.

Lowering his head, he leaned in closer, his breath warm against her ear. His next words came softer, stripped of the usual sharpness. "But... you make it feel less like a prison." You make everything less like a prison. He pressed his face into her hair, breathing her in, his heart aching with a tenderness he had never known before. The weight of his past, of the boy he had been, felt lighter with her beside him. I thought Lily was my salvation, he reflected bitterly, but she was just a fantasy, a ghost I was chasing. His grip on his wife tightened as he let the thought settle, the realization that had haunted him since first got together finally crystallizing in his mind. Lily was never the one I needed. It was always you.

For the first time in his life, Severus allowed himself to feel the love he had so long believed was out of reach. This is real. This is mine. Despite the darkness that still clung to him, despite the ghosts that still lingered in his mind, he knew here, in her arms, he had found something true.
