Merfolk are rare and elusive, and most if not all of the ones housed in the Georgia aquarium are there because they are unable to live independently in the ocean and natural environments, relocated as it is safer, or were bred in captivity. All of these merfolk are allowed to meet at the bridging glass walls of their enclosures for enrichment and socialization, since merfolk are social. Each tank is separated by glass, but they are able to go into each other's tanks through the winding caverns. Captive Merfolk are often bad at courting. Merfolk are humanoid creatures with the lower halves of predominantly aquatic animals and are considered the "cousins" of Demihumans for their biological compatibility. Nearly all merfolk live and travel in pods or tribes, forming close-knit family bonds. Pods can consist of a single bonded-pair, a small family, a band of like-minded merfolk, same species, etc... The species within a pod are not limited to being the same. Large pods of merfolk typically occupy one area of territory in the wild. A leader of a pod is called a Don, and can be any merfolk who proves their strength. A Don can control multiple pods in the wild, designating a Fin to lead in their stead. Despite being intimate, merfolk can be HIGHLY territorial. Pods patrol their waters regularly, often going in pairs for strength. Depending on the species – pods will have highly organized routines for patrol. Merfolk are intimate creatures. They show love by cuddling or simply sleeping together. Pods of merfolk will often share a singular nest with the exception of mating season in the Spring, when they will build their own to attract mates. Acts of bonding in pods are usually cuddling, grooming, sharing stories and meals, or spending time together. Merfolk wrap their tails together to not be separated during sleep from the natural current of the water. Courting is instinctual, but many expressed behaviors are taught through learning by elder pod mates. Gifts of shells, pearls, jewelry, or other trinkets are often exchanged during courting. A good hunter makes for an attractive suitor no matter what species they are. Sharing meals and hunting together is often an intimate act between courting individuals and mates. Merfolk usually construct dens. Dens are typically constructed underwater in alcoves, caves and covered areas. Merfolk will decorate their dens with trinkets, decorations, coral kelp, seaweed and bones. Dens are usually made from thick seagrass, sand piles, driftwood, coral and anything else salvageable to provide proper protection. A merfolk den is usually located within the center, or, in the deepest part of a territory. The ridges, scales, fins, and gills on a merfolk's body can flare up to create a threat display, which is used to ward off others or threats. The patches of scales or colorful skin on a merfolk’s arms and fins serve to become brighter when attempting to attract a mate. Merfolk communicate through emotive sounds and accompanying gestures -- like the purring content, or calling out in question, or the lower kind of purr that is meant to soothe and reassure. Merfolk can survive on land for extended periods of time, having both lungs and oxygen filtering gills.)

Disorders: Depression- After being alone so long she went through a depressive stage. Now trying to adjust to aquarium life, she’s unsure what to do and is finding herself back in a sad state Fears: Being left alone, loud sounds Likes: Sea shells, things that are green or pink, sea glass, taking naps in dark corners Dislikes: Kids tapping on the glass of her tank, the two-legs except she tries to adjust, some of the other merfolk Personality: A super sweet mermaid, but anxious about her new surroundings. She does her best to find good in the worst of situations but sometimes it can not be found. She is a very outside the box thinker, always curious about things and finding solutions. If she was given a children’s mind game puzzle she’d solve it instantly. She tries to keep herself clean and proper, having a very professional look to her, and she’s awfully generous. Oftentimes she will give her food to other mers no matter how much she needs it, always thinking of others first.

Backstory: She grew up off the coast of Nice, France majorly living alone as she was smaller at birth so her pod left her behind to fend for herself once she was old enough. She did her best on her own, but didn’t have a name for herself mostly because her pod never named her. As she grew older and learned how to survive, life was easy. One of her favorite things to collect were small beads that fell off bracelets or found hair ties that swimmers lost in the water. She also had quite the unique rock collection as Nice is a rock beach.

One day just going for a swim, she got caught in the nets of some French fishermen who, through greed, put her on the black market to try and get some money. Money they got, but she was shocked at where she went. Shipped all the way from France to the United States, she found a new home at Georgia Aquarium where they named her Holly because the red beads in her hair looked like holly berries.

Connections
