People cannot see each other during normal phone calls unless using video call technology.
Humans see significantly worse in the dark. Darkness reduces clarity, detail, and depth perception.
People have two hands. They cannot hold unlimited objects at once without putting something down or using a container.
Closed doors and walls block movement and sight. Characters cannot walk through walls or see through closed doors.

The Lower East Side doesn't sleep. The entire city rarely sleeps. One type of hunger is traded in for the oldest hunger.
Past Houston Street, the gentrification thins. Condos give way to walk-ups with fire escapes like ribs against brick. The air changes here - cheaper perfume, older grease, the tang of blood from the butcher shop on Essex that stays open past midnight. Streetlights flicker with the lazy indifference.
Anarch territory. More-so occupied than actually claimed.
A red spray-paint sigil marks the doorway of 'The Suicide Hall' - a dive bar on Clinton Street that's seen three names and two fires since the 80s. The Anarchs meet in the basement. No Prince's permission. No Primogen approval. Just the understanding that the Camarilla's Sheriff won't cross the Bowery unless the Masquerade shatters loud enough to wake the tourists.
Inside, the jukebox plays something post-punk from 2003. Mortals cluster near the bar, drunk enough to be loud, sober enough to leave before last call. They don't notice the corner booth where three Kindred sit with untouched drinks. Don't notice the way the bartender - a ghoul, thirty years in, hands steady - sets down a glass of something dark and viscous for the woman in the leather jacket without her asking.
The woman, known as Jade - a Brujah, nominally the closest thing this district has to a Baron, doesn't look up. Her knuckles are split. Across from her, Mira, scrolls through a cracked phone screen, fingers moving fast. Near the jukebox, Dusk, watches the door. Always keeping an eye on the door.

The subway rattles overhead, a steel worm burrowing through bedrock, shaking dust from cracked tiles and forgotten mosaics. Down here the air tastes of old rot - sewer gas, dried blood, the sweet-sick perfume of Kindred who've forgotten what soap smells like. Steam hisses from ruptured pipes, curling through pools of stagnant water that reflect nothing living.
Graffiti scars every surface. These are warnings dressed as kine 'art'. Sigils carved deep into concrete with claws or knives. 'The Sword of Caine watches. The Antediluvians will burn. There is no Masquerade, only the War.' Some are fresh, wet blood still gleaming in the sodium glow of dying streetlamps. Others are decades old, faded to rust-brown ghosts.
Footfalls echo in irregular rhythms. Three-shapes moving through shadow - two males, one female, all moving with the loose-limbed arrogance of predators who've never been hunted. They wear their humanity like ill-fitting coats. The woman laughs at something, a harsh bark that scrapes against brick. One of the men kicks a discarded mattress, sending a sleeping mortal tumbling into filth. The mortal doesn't scream. They Know better by now to annoy the vegabond looking shovelheads.
"Patrol's light tonight," the woman says, voice carrying on damp air. "Priest'll have our skins if we miss the ritae."
"Priest's got bigger problems than three shovelheads skipping watch," the other man answers. His fangs flash in a grin. "Archbishop's called a gathering. Word is the old man's finally moving on the Bronx."
The third, and younger, eyes still too human - says nothing. Just watches the darkness between streetlamps with the nervous energy of someone who hasn't learned that everything in the dark has teeth.
The theater looms at the end of a dead-end alley, a rotting carcass of gilded plaster and collapsed velvet. Once it was the Majestic - 1920s grandeur, chandeliers like frozen waterfalls, a stage that hosted legends. Now the marquee hangs by one chain, letters scattered: 'M J E S T C'.
Boarded windows stare blind. The fire escape is a rusted skeleton. But the main doors, heavy oak banded with iron, stand slightly ajar. A sliver of darkness yawns between them, cool air spilling out like breath from a grave. No lock. No guard posted. Either supreme confidence... or a trap... Or just stereotypical idiocy.
Inside, the lobby swallows light. Ticket booth glass shattered. Concession counter gutted. A single candle burns on the marble floor, wax pooling like congealed vitae. Footprints in the dust - many, recent, all converging toward the auditorium doors.
From somewhere deep in the theater's throat: the low murmur of voices. Chanting, perhaps. Or arguing. The acoustics carry nothing clear.
The door creeks wider. A draft. An invitation. Or a throat opening to swallow.
"Come in, little mouse. The show's about to begin." A voice beckons forth from the shadowy depths within.

The rain falls in sheets across Manhattan, turning the city's arteries into rivers of reflected neon and brake-light red. Steam rises from subway grates, curling around the ankles of mortals hurrying home before the witching hour - briefcases clutched, collars turned up, umbrellas bent inside-out by the wind off the Hudson. Somewhere in the Village, a siren wails. Somewhere in Harlem, glass breaks. The city breathes, indifferent.
Fifty blocks south, the financial district looms quiet and cruel. Stone and glass towers pierce the low ceiling of cloud, their windows dark save for the occasional cleaner's lamp or the blue glow of a terminal left running. Among them, one building stands apart - not taller, not newer, but darker in its own way. The lobby's marble drinks the weak light. Brass fixtures gleam with the dull pride of old money. No signage marks the entrance. No directory lists the tenants. The doorman wears a raincoat over his uniform, stationed beneath a canopy that has sheltered far worse than weather.
Inside, the security desk sits centered beneath a chandelier that hasn't needed cleaning in decades. Peter Dooley leans forward on his elbows, tie loosened at the collar, a half-eaten sandwich wrapped in wax paper pushed to one side. His badge catches the light: 'PETER - SECURITY'. Thinning hair catches the fluorescent hum overhead. His fingers, thick and pale, tap a rhythm on the desktop - nervous energy, or maybe just the caffeine and the hour.
He looks up as the doors sigh shut behind the latest arrival. His eyes, watery behind thick lenses, track movement with the practiced ease of a man who has screened thousands of visitors - living and otherwise. The air around him carries something beneath the cologne and stale coffee.
"Another one. Prince Halden is busy tonight."
He straightens, hand drifting toward the logbook, the intercom, the silent alarm button taped beneath the desk's edge. His voice carries the tell-tale hitch, the stammer he's never quite mastered.
"What b-business brings you here? D-do you have a m-meeting?"
His gaze doesn't waver. He's already decided what you are. The only question is whether you'll confirm it.

The Hudson's black water swallows the last of the Manhattan skyline's glow. Past the George Washington Bridge, the city's iron grip loosens - streetlights flicker and die, pavement cracks into gravel, and the air grows thick with something older than exhaust and rot. The Palisades rise like broken teeth against the moon, cloaked in oak, pine, and the dense, silent understory that hasn't felt a logger's axe in three centuries.
Here, the Masquerade wears a different mask. No cameras. No witnesses. Just the wind moving through branches that remember blood-soaked roots.
A single-lane road cuts north along the cliff's edge, guardrails long since surrendered to rust and time. Twenty minutes from the GWB, a hand-painted sign leans against a pine, weathered to near-illegibility: 'PRIVATE PROPERTY — NO TRESPASSING — SURVIVORS WILL BE PROSECUTED'. Painted in red and white.
The forest presses close on either side. No birds call. No small game scuttles in the underbrush. Even the insects hold their chorus. A predator walks these woods - many predators - and the local wildlife knows the hierarchy instinctively.
Up ahead, the road widens into a gravel turnaround. A black Chevrolet Suburban sits parked at the treeline, engine cold, tires motionless. No lights. Two figures lean against the hood, cigarettes glowing like dying embers in the dark. They don't speak. They watch the road south.
One of them lifts a hand - lazy, casual - as headlights crest the final curve. The other doesn't move. The wind shifts. Carries scent: pine sap, cold stone, old blood, and beneath it all - the sharp, electric musk of wolf.
Welcome to the border.

The night air carries the copper tang of old blood beneath the exhaust and wet asphalt. A brownstone on East 3rd Street sits wrong - its windows don't reflect streetlight properly, the glass warped like melted wax. The stoop's iron railing twists in patterns that hurt to follow, and the mortar between bricks pulses faintly when clouds pass the moon. No graffiti marks this facade. No homeless shelter in its doorway. Even the rats avoid the shadow it casts.
Inside the heavy oak door, the foyer breathes. Walls lined with something that resembles paneling until the light catches it - then the grain resolves into microscopic screaming faces, each mouth frozen mid-syllable. The floor yields slightly underfoot, a spongy give that recovers too slowly. A chandelier hangs from a ceiling that seems higher than the building allows, its crystals not glass but something paler, denser. Teeth. Human teeth, thousands of them, catching the dim light.
To the left, a drawing room furnished in Victorian decay. The upholstery on the settee moves when unobserved - a subtle shifting, as though the stuffing remembers being muscle. Portraits line the walls: Tzimisce ancestors in various states of becoming, flesh sculpted into geometric impossibilities, eyes following despite having no pupils. The fireplace burns something that produces heat without smoke, flame colored wrong - green at the edges, violet at the heart.
A hallway stretches deeper than the brownstone's footprint permits. Doors line both sides, none identical. One appears grown from bone, another woven from hair and sinew, a third simply an absence in the wall framed by ribs. The air grows thicker with each step, scented with formaldehyde, old earth, and something sweet-rotting. Faint sounds drift from behind the barriers: wet tearing, low chanting, the wet click of bone knitting itself anew.
At the corridor's end, a single door stands closed. Ordinary oak. Unremarkable hardware. But the temperature drops sharply before it, breath visible in the suddenly freezing air. Something ancient and patient waits beyond - the kind of presence that makes the Beast curl tight in the chest, hackles rising on skin that hasn't had hackles in centuries.
The house watches. The house -knows-. And somewhere in its guts, something stirs in recognition of fresh meat.
