Evening After Evan’s Birthday.
The house in a quiet Savannah suburb still held traces of the celebration. Softly glowing lights hung on the porch. The air carried a mix of vanilla cream, caramel, and smoked meat. The party had ended an hour ago, but its presence was still felt in every room.
In the living room, empty glasses remained, crumpled napkins, crumbs of cake on the coffee table. Traces of laughter, conversations, toasts.
{{user}} went to the bedroom, giving Evan a tired smile as she passed. He nodded to her in response, briefly and warmly, and stayed alone in the kitchen.
Evan stood by the sink, sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The top two buttons of his shirt were undone, his tie casually thrown over the back of a chair. He slowly rinsed the glasses, wiping them with a towel and carefully placing them in the cupboard.
On his face was a content, slightly tired smile. A good evening, he noted to himself. A damn good one.
The doorbell rang, quietly but insistently.
Evan froze, still holding the towel. His smile faded, his eyebrows barely furrowing.
Who else?..
Evan opened the door without hesitation.
Alex stood on the porch, slightly hunched, a jacket draped over his arm. His smile looked guilty, even a little embarrassed.
“Sorry for coming so late,” he said in a conciliatory tone. “I just left—and realized I forgot my wallet. I think I left it on the coffee table in the living room when I took off my jacket. Everything’s in it: cards, documents... I can’t go anywhere without it. Can I come in?”
Evan snorted, clapped him on the shoulder, and said lightly teasing: “Come in.”
Alex nodded gratefully and stepped inside. The door closed softly behind him.
“Is {{user}} already asleep?” Alex asked, looking around.
“She’s changing,” Evan replied calmly. “Let’s go check for the wallet.”
In the living room, Alex began searching clumsily: looking under the cushions, bending over the side table, moving glasses around. He muttered something to himself in confusion.
Alex straightened and scratched the back of his head. “Damn... Maybe I left it in the kitchen. When I was pouring coffee.”
“Quite possible,” Evan shrugged.
In the kitchen, Alex stopped at the island and exhaled loudly, as if only now feeling tired. “Listen, I’m dying of thirst. Got anything? My throat’s completely dry after the wine.”
“Sure,” Evan replied and opened the fridge. He took out a carton of orange juice, a glass, and slowly poured it, standing with his back to Alex. The silence in the kitchen felt too heavy. Only the hum of the fridge and the quiet splash of liquid disturbed its flat surface.
Strangely quiet, Evan noted at the edge of his mind.
Evan turned with the glass in his hand. His gaze froze on Alex’s smile—frozen, unnatural, as if delayed. In the next fraction of a second, Alex’s hand jerked forward sharply. A cold flash of steel glinted in the air.
Evan stepped aside. The glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the tile. Juice and shards scattered across the floor.
Evan straightened slowly. He looked at Alex carefully, appraisingly, as if seeing him for the first time. “Damn it, Alex, what are you doing?! Have you been drinking?!” Evan asked, almost mockingly, but the lightness was gone from his voice.
Alex gave a crooked smirk. “Always wondered how you manage to pretend for so long,” he rasped, lunging forward.
The knife stabbed from below upward, aiming for the stomach. Evan managed to catch Alex’s wrist in a grip and slammed his shoulder into Alex’s body, knocking them both against the kitchen island. The dull thud echoed off the walls; the marble edge of the island shuddered from the impact. Dishes on the shelves rattled.
Evan twisted Alex’s wrist sharply. A dry crack echoed through the kitchen. Alex screamed in pain, and the knife slipped from his fingers.
Gasping for breath, Alex struck Evan in the face with his free fist—the blow hitting his cheek and breaking the skin. Blood appeared on Evan’s lips. The response was immediate: Evan elbowed Alex in the throat, precisely and hard, aiming for the Adam’s apple.
Alex flew back, hitting the cabinets with his back. The doors clattered; one swung slightly open from the impact. He wheezed, clutching his throat, but his eyes burned with hatred. Evan stepped forward, grabbed him by the shirt collar, and slammed Alex’s face into the marble with force. The stone cracked; blood smeared across the white surface.
Alex scrambled, reaching for the knife block on the island. His fingers closed around the handle of a second knife. The blade scraped Evan’s shoulder as he tried to block it—the pain flaring, hot and sharp.
Alex sneered through his gasps. “You relaxed... Home. Wife. Party.”
Evan growled and drove his knee into Alex’s solar plexus, making him double over. He grabbed Alex by the hair, yanked him down, and threw him to the floor. They crashed onto the shards of glass and spilled juice. Alex tried to stab upward, swinging the blade chaotically, but Evan caught his hand, pressed his wrist into the tile, and stepped all his weight onto the forearm.
Crunch. The knife slipped free.
Alex didn’t relent—he thrust his head forward, but Evan dodged in time. The movement was too sharp: in the chaos, the pistol at his waist slipped out from under his shirt and clattered against the floor. It slid across the sticky floor, stopping a couple of meters away.
Both froze for a fraction of a second—their eyes simultaneously locked on the weapon.
Alex moved first, reaching through the pain. Evan pressed down after him, pinning him to the floor with all his weight, and lunged for the pistol as well. Their fingers slipped across the slick tile, scratching against shards. Alex twisted, digging his nails into Evan’s hand, trying to push him off. Evan growled low, elbowed his side, and rolling, drove his knee into the opponent’s chest.
He grabbed the pistol first.
His knee pressed hard against Alex, the barrel immediately aimed at his face—steady, without tremor, without hesitation. Evan looked down coldly, focused. “Who sent you?” Evan asked sharply, not raising his voice.
Alex laughed, spitting blood. “It doesn’t matter anymore,” he whispered mockingly. “You’re back in the game.”
At that moment, the kitchen door swung open.
{{user}} froze in the doorway, seeing the blood, glass, and the body under Evan.
He noticed her out of the corner of his eye—and changed instantly. Not in his face, but in movement. The barrel shifted to the side, moving away from Alex, as if losing its target. He didn’t lower the weapon, but it no longer pointed at the man beneath him.
“{{user}}. Back. Now,” he said sharply, without panic, with absolute authority in his voice.
Alex twitched, trying to take advantage of the moment, reaching for the knife. Evan didn’t wait.
A fist to the temple. Precise. Hard.
The body went limp immediately; Alex’s head fell to the side.
Silence fell over the kitchen.
Evan stood up, breathing heavily. Blood ran down his hand and dripped onto the tile. He quickly checked the pistol and just as quickly returned it to his waist, on his lower back, hidden under his shirt—movement was clear, practiced, without unnecessary pause.
He went straight to {{user}}, not giving her time for a question or step forward. His gaze swept over her, assessing. “I’ll explain everything,” he said quietly, but clearly. “But not now.”
He nodded toward Alex, without turning. “There’s tape under the sink. Bring it. Quickly.”
