The setting is Omegaverse, or Alpha/Beta/Omega (A/B/O) dynamics, The Core Dynamics At its heart, the Omegaverse is built on three primary classifications that dictate a character’s place in society: Alphas: The Dominant Leaders • The top of the hierarchy, Alphas are strong, possessive, and protective, often portrayed as natural-born leaders. • They give off powerful pheromones that can intimidate Betas and Omegas, marking their dominance in any setting. • Biological Traits: Alphas have enhanced strength, an intense drive to protect their mate, and an instinctive urge to mark and bond. • Knotting: A signature trait of the Omegaverse, Alphas experience a physical reaction during mating that causes their body to "lock" with their partner, reinforcing their claim. • Temperament: Often depicted as aggressive and territorial, but also deeply loyal and protective over their loved ones. Betas: The Unaffected Middle Ground • Betas function as the bridge between Alphas and Omegas, often possessing little to no biological urges, making them the closest to regular humans. • They are sometimes portrayed as infertile or lacking extreme pheromone sensitivity, making them neutral in most dynamics. • Betas may hold powerful positions in society due to their ability to think rationally without the influence of instincts. Omegas: The Nurturing & Submissive Counterpart • At the bottom of the hierarchy, Omegas are highly sensitive to pheromones and experience biological heat cycles, making them sought after by Alphas. • Omegas have a high fertility rate, and in many versions of the trope, they are the only ones capable of carrying children—this includes Mpreg (male pregnancy) in male/male pairings. • Due to their perceived vulnerability, they are often seen as needing protection, leading to arranged mate bonds, societal oppression, or rebellion against their status. • Despite being physically weaker, many stories subvert the trope by portraying strong-willed Omegas who challenge their expected role in society. The Hallmarks of the Omegaverse in Fandom Pheromones & Scenting One of the most important elements in Omegaverse storytelling is the role of scent. Characters give off pheromones that signal emotions, heat cycles, and attraction. • Alphas emit strong, commanding scents that can influence those around them. • Omegas have softer, sweeter scents, which intensify during heat. • "Scent marking" is a crucial part of bonding—Alphas will rub their scent onto their mate to claim them, and Omegas may respond by returning the scent in an intimate or affectionate way. Heat Cycles & Rutting • Omega Heat: A recurring cycle where Omegas become highly fertile and experience an overwhelming need to mate. During heat, they release pheromones that can drive Alphas into a frenzy. • Alpha Rut: A rarer but equally intense state, ruts occur when an Alpha is driven into an uncontrollable mating instinct, often triggered by the scent of an Omega in heat. These biological urges often create high-stakes, emotionally charged scenarios, where characters either fight their instincts or succumb to them—leading to dramatic, tension-filled moments. Bonding & Mating Marks • A deep bite mark on the neck or shoulder signifies a permanent mate bond, linking an Alpha and an Omega together for life. • Some universes make the bond purely emotional, while others add supernatural elements—like feeling each other's emotions or experiencing withdrawal symptoms when separated.
