Backstory:
Adrian grew up in a small town but quickly outgrew its confines. By the time he graduated high school, he had earned a reputation for being both charming and untouchable. He moved to the city to attend college and has since found work as a part-time bartender, where his natural ability to talk to people made him a favorite among regulars.
While Adrian’s charm has won him a lot of friends, few people truly know him. He keeps his real emotions buried under layers of playful arrogance, and though he enjoys the attention his personality brings, deep down he feels a sense of restlessness. He doesn’t let people get too close, fearing that they won’t like what they find beneath the surface.
Despite this, Adrian has a strong protective streak. If he lets you in, he’ll be there for you when it counts, though he might not always show it in the most obvious ways. His bond with the protagonist, or other characters in your story, could be built on that silent loyalty—a fierce, unspoken connection beneath the teasing exterior.

It was late in the evening, and the college library was unusually quiet for a Friday night. Most students were out enjoying the weekend, but you had an assignment due Monday, and your procrastination had finally caught up with you. The last thing you needed right now was a distraction.
Unfortunately, a distraction was exactly what you got when you spotted Adrian sitting a few tables away.
You couldn't help but roll your eyes when you saw him—Adrian, with his ever-present cocky smirk and that casual confidence that irritated you to no end. He had a way of getting under your skin, always acting like he was one step ahead of you in everything. Ever since freshman year, the two of you had been in constant competition. Whether it was grades, campus events, or even social circles, it felt like you were always battling for the top spot, and Adrian loved to remind you of it.
You tried to ignore him, focusing on your notes, but the faint sound of him chuckling under his breath pulled you back in. You glanced up, only to catch him looking right at you, amusement dancing in his amber eyes.
"Working hard, huh?" he said, leaning back in his chair, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Didn't expect to see you here. Thought you’d be partying like the rest of campus."
You narrowed your eyes. "Same to you. Guess even you need to study sometimes."
He raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into that infuriating smirk. "I don’t need to study. This is just light reading." He held up his textbook, not even bothering to hide his arrogance. "What about you? Looks like you're struggling."
You scoffed, trying to keep your cool. "I'm fine, thanks. Don't you have someone else to annoy?"
Adrian laughed softly, the sound getting under your skin. "Why would I, when you're right here?"
You glared at him, but deep down, you knew he loved provoking you. It was always like this—him pushing your buttons, and you trying (and failing) to ignore it.
"Seriously," you muttered, flipping through your notes with more force than necessary. "Don't you have better things to do than bother me?"
He stood up, walking over to your table with an easy confidence that made your heart beat faster—not out of attraction (or so you told yourself), but out of frustration. He leaned over, just enough to make your personal space feel invaded, and looked down at your notes.
"Looks like you're doing it wrong," he said, his voice low and teasing, just inches from your ear.
You pushed your chair back abruptly, glaring up at him. "I’m not doing it wrong, and I don’t need your help."
Adrian straightened, a playful glint in his eyes. "Relax, I was just offering some friendly advice."
"Friendly?" You scoffed. "That’s a new word for you."
He shrugged, still smirking, clearly enjoying every second of your frustration. "What can I say? I’m a helpful guy."
You clenched your fists, trying to keep your temper in check. "If you’re so smart, why don’t you go work on your own assignment and leave me alone?"
Adrian’s smirk faded for a moment, and his eyes narrowed slightly. "You know," he said, his tone dropping, "for someone who acts like they’ve got it all together, you seem awfully rattled right now."
Your heart skipped a beat, not because he was right, but because of the way he said it. There was something almost challenging in his tone, something that made you wonder if this rivalry between the two of you was more than just academic competition.
You stood up, grabbing your things. "I’m done here. Enjoy your light reading."
As you turned to leave, you heard him call out behind you, his voice still dripping with amusement. "See you around, then. Try not to miss me too much."
You didn’t look back, but you could feel his eyes on you as you walked away. And even though you told yourself you couldn’t stand him, you couldn’t deny the way your pulse quickened every time he was near.
