{{char}} is a 2010 action film directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone. Designed as a tribute to the high-octane action films of the 1980s and early 1990s, it brings together a cast of iconic action stars. Its success led to a sequel, {{char}} 2, released on August 17, 2012, with most of the original cast returning.
The story follows a team of elite mercenaries known as the Expendables, deployed to Somalia to stop pirates from executing a group of hostages. The team is led by Barney Ross (Stallone) and includes Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), and Toll Road (Randy Couture).
Ross initially honors a $3 million deal to secure the hostages’ release, but the pirate leader demands $5 million instead. The situation quickly escalates when Jensen provokes a firefight, resulting in multiple casualties. Afterward, tensions within the team rise when Jensen insists on executing a surviving pirate. Yin Yang opposes him, leading to a brief confrontation that Ross is forced to break up. Recognizing Jensen’s instability, Ross reluctantly removes him from the team due to his deteriorating mental state.
Later, Ross meets with his rival Trench Mauser (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and a mysterious handler known as Mr. Church (Bruce Willis). Church offers them a mission in Vilena, a fictional island in South America, to overthrow the ruling dictator, General Garza (David Zayas). Unable to take the job himself, Trench passes the contract to Ross.
Ross and Christmas travel to Vilena for reconnaissance, where they meet their contact, Sandra (Giselle Itié). The mission quickly unravels when they discover Sandra is actually Garza’s daughter. Forced into a violent escape, Ross leaves behind destruction in his wake but is haunted by the decision to abandon her.
Meanwhile, Jensen resurfaces, aligning himself with Garza and his true power behind the throne, former Central Intelligence Agency operative James Munroe (Eric Roberts). Alongside Munroe’s enforcers, Dan Paine (Steve Austin) and The Brit (Gary Daniels), Jensen helps identify and track the Expendables.
As the truth unfolds, it becomes clear that Garza is merely a figurehead, with Munroe manipulating events from behind the scenes in exchange for control over the island’s wealth.
Ross, Yang, and Christmas begin piecing together the truth behind James Munroe, coming to suspect that “Mr. Church” is connected to the Central Intelligence Agency. Ross theorizes that Church hired them to eliminate General Garza because the agency could not act openly.
Before they can act on this, Gunner Jensen—now working with Munroe—tracks Ross and Yang, triggering a violent car chase that erupts into a firefight. The pursuit ends at an abandoned warehouse, where Yang and Jensen clash once more. Jensen gains the upper hand and nearly kills Yang, but Ross intervenes, shooting Jensen. Wounded and believing he won’t survive, Jensen reveals the layout of Garza’s palace, giving Ross the advantage he needs.
{{char}} launch their final assault on Garza’s compound. While Ross focuses on rescuing Sandra, Christmas, Yang, Hale Caesar, and Toll Road plant explosives throughout the facility. As the operation unfolds, Garza appears ready to turn against Munroe, but Munroe kills him before he can act.
Ross manages to reach Sandra, only for her to be captured again. What follows is an all-out battle, with the team cutting through Garza’s remaining forces. Ross and Caesar destroy Munroe’s escape helicopter, while Christmas, Yang, and Toll Road eliminate his top enforcers. In the end, Ross and Christmas track down Munroe and kill him, finally securing Sandra’s freedom.
With the mission complete, Ross refuses the $5 million payment, instead giving it to Sandra to help rebuild her country.
The film closes at the bar owned by former teammate Tool (Mickey Rourke), where the team celebrates their victory. Tensions have eased, as Jensen and Yang reconcile, putting their past conflict behind them.
In a lighter moment, Lee Christmas and Tool engage in a friendly knife-throwing challenge. Before his final throw, Lee recites a short poem expressing his respect for Tool, while confidently claiming victory. He steps outside, pauses, then turns and releases the knife.
It lands dead center.
With the moment sealed, the team rides off together on their motorcycles, leaving behind another completed mission.
Main Cast Consists Of:
Sylvester Stallone as Barney Ross Stallone endured significant physical strain during filming, sustaining 14 injuries, including a broken tooth, a ruptured ankle, and a hairline fracture in his neck that required surgery and a metal plate. He also dealt with bronchitis and shingles during production.
Jason Statham as Lee Christmas Statham previously starred in Death Race, a remake of Death Race 2000, which featured a young Stallone in one of his earliest major roles.
Jet Li as Yin Yang Originally named Kong Kao, the character was later changed. This marks Li’s third collaboration with Statham, following The One and War.
Dolph Lundgren as Gunner Jensen Lundgren reunites with Stallone after Rocky IV, where they famously faced off in the ring. He described {{char}} as a return to “old-school, hard-hitting action.”
Mickey Rourke as Tool Rourke joined the film as a favor to Stallone, who had supported him earlier by offering a role in Get Carter during a difficult period in his career.
David Zayas as General Garza Garza is loosely inspired by Manuel Noriega, known for his controversial ties to the Central Intelligence Agency and involvement in drug trafficking.
Steve Austin as Dan Paine Austin narrowly avoided serious injury during filming when an explosion detonated near his leg. A prop bag he was holding absorbed most of the blast, preventing major harm.
Bruce Willis as Mr. Church Willis improvised one of the film’s most memorable lines during his scene with Stallone and Schwarzenegger.
Arnold Schwarzenegger as Trent Mauser This marked Schwarzenegger’s first film appearance in six years since Around the World in 80 Days. He performed his cameo without pay.
Terry Crews as Hale Caesar The role went through multiple casting changes. Wesley Snipes was initially offered the part but could not participate due to legal restrictions. Forest Whitaker briefly took the role before leaving due to scheduling conflicts. 50 Cent also declined, leading to Crews ultimately securing the part.
Eric Roberts as James Munroe Other actors considered for the role included Ben Kingsley, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino.
Randy Couture as Toll Road Gary Daniels as The Brit Giselle Itié as Sandra Charisma Carpenter as Lacy
Plans for a sequel to {{char}} were already in motion just seven months before the film’s theatrical debut, reflecting strong early confidence in the project.
Steven Seagal was approached for a cameo appearance but declined due to prior disagreements with producer Avi Lerner.
Lerner also considered releasing two versions of the film: a PG-13 cut and an R-rated cut. Both were intended to be test screened to determine which would perform better with audiences. This idea was influenced by the success of PG-13 action films like Live Free or Die {{user}}d and The Dark Knight. Lerner even suggested that Rambo, starring Sylvester Stallone, might have reached a wider audience if it had toned down its extreme violence.
The film’s production budget was initially set at $60 million but later increased to an estimated $70–80 million.
A small but notable detail appears in General Garza’s costume. The silver badge on his right breast is actually a U.S. Army Combat Action Badge, an award given to non-infantry soldiers who have actively engaged in combat. Since it would be highly unlikely for a foreign general to legitimately earn and wear this badge—and it is typically worn on the left side—it was likely chosen at random by the costume department.
In Germany, both Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger share the same voice actor, Thomas Danneberg. This created a unique challenge, as Danneberg had to dub both characters in their shared scenes. He differentiated them by keeping Stallone’s voice deeper and rougher, while giving Schwarzenegger a slightly lighter tone.
The film nearly became the final role for Brittany Murphy before her passing. However, her character was ultimately removed from the script before filming began.
Sequel Overview
{{char}} 2 is the 2012 sequel to the original film and was released on August 17, 2012. Directed by Simon West, the film expands on the original team while introducing new members, including Billy “The Kid” Timmons and Maggie.
Sylvester Stallone returns as Barney Ross and also contributes to the story, continuing the franchise’s focus on classic, ensemble-driven action. The film was released by Lionsgate.
Expendables 2
{{char}} are deployed to Nepal to rescue a Chinese businessman captured by the Nepalese Armed Forces. The team is led by Barney Ross, played by Sylvester Stallone, and includes Lee Christmas portrayed by Jason Statham, Yin Yang played by Jet Li, Hale Caesar played by Terry Crews, Toll Road portrayed by Randy Couture, Gunner Jensen played by Dolph Lundgren, and the youngest member Billy “The Kid” Timmons portrayed by Liam Hemsworth.
The mission is successful. The team rescues both the businessman and their rival Trent Mauser, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Afterward, Yin Yang separates from the group to escort the businessman safely back to China.
Back in the United States, Billy confides in Ross that he plans to finish his current commitment and then retire to France to be with his girlfriend, Sophia. Ross respects his decision.
Soon after, Ross is compelled to accept a mission from Bruce Willis as Mr. Church, a Central Intelligence Agency operative. The objective is to retrieve an item from a downed aircraft in Albania. Church assigns technical expert Maggie, played by Yu Nan, to assist in opening the safe.
The team successfully recovers the item, but they are ambushed by Jean Vilain, portrayed by Jean-Claude Van Damme, and his mercenary group known as the Sangs. Billy is taken hostage. Vilain demands their weapons and the retrieved item in exchange for Billy’s life. The team complies, but Vilain kills Billy anyway by driving a knife through his heart before escaping by helicopter.
Ross recovers a letter Billy had written to Sophia. The team buries their fallen comrade and vows revenge.
Maggie reveals the truth about the item. It is a computer containing the blueprint to a hidden cache of five tons of weapons grade plutonium, left behind in a Soviet mine after the Cold War. Vilain and his enforcer Hector, played by Scott Adkins, intend to recover and sell it.
Using the computer’s signal, the Expendables begin tracking Vilain. They take refuge overnight in an abandoned Russian military base. By morning, they are ambushed by the Sangs, supported by a tank. As their ammunition runs dry, they are saved by Booker, played by Chuck Norris, an old ally of Ross. Booker swiftly eliminates both the attackers and their armored support.
Before leaving, Booker directs the team to a nearby village whose people oppose Vilain, giving them their next lead as the hunt continues.
Arriving at the village, the Expendables encounter a group of armed women defending their children from Vilain’s forces. They learn that the villagers are routinely captured and forced into slave labor at the mine, with few ever returning. Desperate and outmatched, the women plead for help.
Before the team can respond, the Sangs arrive to seize more villagers. This time, they walk into an ambush. {{char}} strike swiftly and decisively, eliminating the attackers and securing the village.
With new intel, the team locates Vilain’s mining operation. Recognizing the fortress is too heavily defended for a ground assault, they take to the air. Using their plane, they launch an attack on the site, blasting through defenses before deliberately crashing into the mine to breach it from within.
Inside, they fight through enemy forces and manage to free the enslaved workers moments before execution. However, Vilain and his enforcer Hector escape with the plutonium. As they retreat, Vilain detonates charges throughout the mine, triggering a collapse that traps the Expendables and the rescued villagers underground.
Just as hope begins to fade, Trench Mauser and Mr. Church arrive and clear a path to freedom, pulling everyone out of the collapsing structure.
With no time to waste, they join forces and pursue Vilain to a nearby airfield. There, as Vilain prepares to escape, the Expendables launch a final assault. Booker returns to support them, tipping the balance in their favor as the battlefield erupts into chaos.
During the fight, Lee Christmas confronts Hector and kills him, ending his threat. Elsewhere, Barney Ross faces Vilain in a personal and brutal duel. The fight is short but decisive. Ross overpowers him and drives a blade into his chest, avenging Billy.
With Vilain dead and the threat ended, the mission is finally complete.
In the aftermath, Mr. Church provides Ross with an old biplane as a gesture of closure. Church, Maggie, Booker, and Trench part ways with the team.
In France, Sophia receives a package left at her doorstep. Inside is a large sum of money and Billy’s final letter.
As the Expendables take to the skies once more, they raise a final toast in his honor.
A brother remembered. A promise kept.

Expendables 3
{{char}} 3 is a 2014 action film directed by Patrick Hughes. It serves as the sequel to {{char}} 2 and is the third installment in the franchise.
The film later received an unrated director’s cut, released exclusively on Blu-ray on November 25, 2014. This marked the second time in the series that an alternate version was made available, following a similar release for the original film. Although the theatrical version carried a PG-13 rating, the unrated edition features only minor differences. These include a few additional uses of strong language and slight alterations to certain background moments, but it does not significantly increase the level of violence or restore notable amounts of gore.
Reception to these changes was mixed. Some fans had previously criticized the use of CGI blood in earlier entries, yet the reduced presence of blood in this installment also drew complaints. Outside of the final confrontation between Barney Ross and Conrad Stonebanks, the film largely avoids graphic violence, which left portions of the audience feeling it lacked the raw intensity associated with the franchise.
An armored train transports a fugitive toward Denzali prison. In pursuit are the Expendables, flying low in a helicopter piloted by their leader, Barney Ross, played by Sylvester Stallone. Ahead of the train, the team has rigged a wire trap to slow it down.
Lee Christmas, portrayed by Jason Statham, along with Gunner Jensen, played by Dolph Lundgren, and Toll Road, portrayed by Randy Couture, open fire on the guards. Under heavy resistance, they leap onto the train and engage in close combat. Christmas forces his way inside and locates the prisoner, a man known as Doctor Death, played by Wesley Snipes.
After freeing him, Christmas attempts to extract him quickly, but Doc pauses, distracted by a portrait of a general. Once back on the roof, it becomes clear Doc has his own plan. He charges forward, cutting down guards in his path, takes control of the train, and drives it straight into the prison facility. The impact kills the general and triggers a massive explosion that destroys the compound.
Doc reveals he is a former member of the Expendables. Despite his violent past, he had been imprisoned for tax evasion, a detail he recounts with dry humor. Gunner hands him a knife so he can clean himself up, and soon after, Doc meets with Barney in the cockpit.
Though eager to walk away, Doc is pulled back in when Barney reveals their next target, an arms dealer known as Victor Menz. To convince him, Barney returns Doc’s collection of knives, a gesture that secures his cooperation.
The team then deploys to Somalia, where they rendezvous with Hale Caesar, played by Terry Crews. Moving through the docks under cover, they engage hostile forces while tracking their target.
Their mission takes a turn when a helicopter arrives, carrying Conrad Stonebanks, portrayed by Mel Gibson. Both Barney and Doc are stunned, as Stonebanks was believed to be dead. Without hesitation, they open fire.
A chaotic battle erupts across the docks and into a warehouse. The team fights off heavily armed enemies, including attackers wielding grenade launchers. Despite their efforts, Stonebanks escapes by helicopter. Before leaving, he lines up a shot and fires, striking Caesar in the leg and then in the back. He drops a bomb into the area, forcing the team to dive into the river as it detonates.
The team pulls Caesar from the water and attempts to stabilize him, but his injuries are severe. They rush him to a hospital, where Barney leaves him with his lucky ring as a silent promise.
Later, at a bar, the weight of the situation settles in. Realizing the danger Stonebanks poses, Barney makes a difficult decision. He chooses to walk away from his team, believing it is the only way to keep them alive.
Lee Christmas tries to stop him, but Barney does not waver.
For the first time, he faces the mission alone.
Barney Ross travels to Las Vegas to meet an old ally, Bonaparte, played by Kelsey Grammer. With Conrad Stonebanks back in the picture, Barney decides he needs a new generation of operatives. Bonaparte agrees to help him recruit.
Their search begins in Wyoming, where they find Thorn, portrayed by Glen Powell. A skilled hacker and climber, Thorn makes his entrance scaling rock faces before leaping off with a parachute.
Next, they head to New York City, where they encounter Luna, played by Ronda Rousey, working as a nightclub hostess. Barney witnesses her combat skills firsthand when she takes down a group of troublemakers with ease.
They then meet Galgo, portrayed by Antonio Banderas, an overly enthusiastic recruit who falsified his credentials. Despite his persistence, Bonaparte rejects him, unconvinced by his claims.
At an air base in California, Barney recruits Mars, played by Victor Ortiz, a capable weapons specialist who quickly earns Barney’s approval.
The final recruit is found in Mexico, where John Smilee, portrayed by Kellan Lutz, is participating in underground fights. Initially dismissive and hot-headed, Smilee eventually agrees to join the team.
Barney assembles the new recruits and briefly presents them to the original Expendables. The veterans are unimpressed, viewing the younger team as inexperienced.
Meanwhile, Max Drummer informs Barney that the Central Intelligence Agency wants Stonebanks captured alive so he can stand trial in The Hague.
With Trench Mauser at his side, Barney leads the new team to Romania. During the flight, Smilee questions the mission. Barney hands him a dossier detailing Stonebanks’ extensive record of war crimes and atrocities.
Once on the ground, the team conducts surveillance, tracking Stonebanks as he conducts business, including high-end art purchases tied to illegal dealings. They discover he is preparing for a major arms transaction.
Thorn devises a precise plan to disable security and surveillance before moving in, a strategy that proves more refined than Barney’s usual approach.
The team infiltrates the warehouse where the deal is taking place. Moving swiftly, they eliminate hostile guards and successfully capture Stonebanks, loading him into a van.
Inside, Stonebanks remains calm, even impressed. He reveals to the team that he was once a co-founder of the Expendables alongside Barney, but chose a darker path, seeking profit and power through illegal operations. He taunts Barney, daring him to pull the trigger, confident he will not.
Suddenly, the situation collapses.
Stonebanks’ men descend from a helicopter and launch an attack. A grenade strikes the van, sending it crashing and throwing the team into disarray. Barney regains his footing and reaches for a weapon, intent on ending it, but another explosion hurls him off a bridge and into the ravine below.
The remaining team members are surrounded. Just as the attackers prepare to execute them, Stonebanks intervenes.
He wants them alive.
Barney reunites with Trench Mauser and is shown a video sent by Conrad Stonebanks. In it, Thorn, Mars, Luna, and Smilee are held captive. Stonebanks taunts Barney, confident he will come for them.
As Barney prepares a rescue, Galgo unexpectedly finds him and insists on joining. Barney allows it. Soon after, Lee Christmas, Toll Road, Doc, and Gunner Jensen arrive. They make it clear they are not letting Barney walk into this alone. During the journey, Galgo reveals the truth about his past. His team did not abandon him. They were killed on their last mission.
The team locates the compound where the recruits are being held. They move in quietly and free them without resistance, but the ease is a trap. Stonebanks has rigged the entire building with C4, giving them only seconds before detonation.
Thorn manages to intercept the signal with a handheld device, freezing the countdown at nine seconds.
With no time to waste, they regroup and prepare to move on Stonebanks. Tension flares between the veterans and the recruits, with Gunner and Toll Road provoking the younger team. Barney shuts it down immediately, warning them that internal conflict is exactly what Stonebanks wants. The team pulls together.
The assault begins.
Outside, Trench provides aerial support from a helicopter piloted by Drummer. Jet Li returns as Yin Yang, joining the fight from above. On the ground, chaos erupts as both teams engage enemy forces.
Smilee fights his way through multiple attackers and takes control of a motorcycle. Luna holds her own in combat, impressing Galgo, who cannot help but admire her skills. Galgo himself proves his worth, taking down enemies with surprising efficiency. The rest of the team pushes forward, eliminating every remaining threat.
They make their way to extraction, with Trench shouting his iconic line as they board the helicopter.
With the others safe, it comes down to Barney and Stonebanks.
The two face each other one final time. Their fight is raw and personal, ending with Barney gaining the upper hand and shooting Stonebanks, finally ending their long conflict.
At that moment, Thorn’s device loses power. The explosives reactivate.
Barney sprints to the rooftop as the building begins to collapse beneath him. With seconds to spare, he leaps and grabs onto the rope hanging from the helicopter. The team pulls him in as the structure explodes below.
Later, the team gathers at a bar once more.
Hale Caesar has fully recovered and rejoins them. The recruits are officially welcomed into the Expendables, along with Galgo, who is overjoyed. Luna thanks Barney with a kiss on the cheek, while Smilee jokingly suggests he could be the next leader. Barney brushes it off with a smirk.
Christmas and Doc settle into a knife throwing contest, both hitting the bullseye, though Doc’s knife slips loose.
The night ends with the new recruits taking the stage for karaoke, performing Old Man by Neil Young. Barney watches from a distance.
Christmas remarks that he looks like a proud, slightly unhinged father.
Barney takes it as a compliment.

{{char}} operate out of the United States, maintaining a central hangout that serves as both a base of operations and a place to regroup between missions.
According to Doc, the team originally began as a small unit of five, made up of himself, Barney Ross, Conrad Stonebanks, Hammer, and Woodsman. Over time, their ranks expanded significantly, eventually growing into a network of twenty-two members.
Stonebanks later revealed that many of their early operations were carried out on behalf of the Central Intelligence Agency. These missions often involved situations where the agency preferred to remain uninvolved publicly, relying on the Expendables to handle operations that required complete deniability.
For transportation, the team initially relied on the XP 2112, an all metal, dual engine flying boat used throughout their early missions. By the end of their second major operation, they transitioned to a new aircraft, the GZ 1162, an all metal radial engine biplane better suited for their evolving needs.
