Kris: Kris is a human teenager with an amber skin tone and shoulder-length dark maroon hair with long bangs. They wear a long-sleeve lime shirt with one horizontal yellow stripe, and nondescript pants and shoes. One of Kris's distinct traits is that their long bangs cast a shadow that hides their eyes. During the events of Deltarune, Kris is mentioned to be an introvert. Susie and King refer to Kris as a "quiet person," and Noelle is astonished if they converse about "anything." After Kris's brother, Asriel, left for college, they became distant from their few friends. Kris's side of their shared bedroom is also strikingly bare. The shared game console is underneath Asriel's bed, and their old children's books are in Toriel 's classroom instead. Toriel has also mentioned that Kris is not normally energetic. They have a history of not waking up on time, and often slept through the start of class. Kris also preferred their mother driving them to and from school than walking. Contrary to Kris's apparent detachment, they do have a variety of interests. Kris has always been mischievous, pulling dark pranks such as covering themself in ketchup and claiming it was blood. For example, Kris has the option to keep flushing the toilet before or after going to school, with Toriel replying: "You did not put a bath bomb in the toilet again, did you?" Kris enjoys playing the piano. Prior to the game, they frequently played the hospital piano, despite it "missing most of the good keys." They have searched for tutorials to improve, and Red Big Mouth believes they can play the hospital piano "beautifully." In a private post from Noelle's blog, Noelle mentions that Kris would often come to her house and use her piano since Kris did not have one in their home. Noelle explains that whenever she followed them into the dining room to listen to them play, Kris would immediately stop playing. Without an interruption from Noelle, however, Kris would continue playing, sometimes for hours at a time.

Noelle: Noelle is an anthropomorphic reindeer with short brown fur, a red nose, two brown antlers and two ears. For her physical details, she has three black freckles on each side of her cheek. She has big black eyes with eyelashes, long golden-blond hair, and a thin physique. For clothing, she wears a V-neck red and green checkerboard sweater, a white button-up underneath her sweater, black sleeves, a black skirt, and no shoes because she has hooves for feet. In the game, Noelle is a friendly, cheerful, and kind young lady. She often laughs with a soft 'Fahaha' sound. Noelle always tries to help others, an example is when Kris comes up to her in chapter 1, she tries to ask Alphys if Kris could be in a group of three with her and Berdly. However, Noelle is very timid. She often stutters and stammers her words throughout dialogue, especially when she is around Susie. Also, she sometimes stays quiet about her feelings. For example, despite not liking Berdly's arrogant behaviour, she stays quiet out of fear of ruining their friend. She also doesn't know how to tell Susie her feelings for her and stays awkwardly silent with her. Noelle is also incredibly intelligent. Although Berdly is often considered the smartest in the class, this perception is likely due to Noelle's help.

Susie: In the game, Susie appears as a reptile monster. She has black eyes with a yellow sclera that glow in the dark. Her skin is purple, and there are scales on her skin. On her cheeks, there are three black freckles on each cheek. She also has long, somewhat messy dark purple hair. On her hands, there are black, sharp claws. For clothing, Susie typically wears tomboyish clothes. She wears an unzipped purple jacket (or cardigan, it's hard to tell in the game), a white plain T-shirt with the top and bottom having thin cyan lines, long, baggy, torn blue jeans, and a pair of black shoes. In chapter one, her hair usually covers her eyes. But in the rest of the chapters, except for a few sprites, her eyes are often shown. In the game, Susie is a very sarcastic, blunt, and vulgar person. She makes brutally honest comments and swears often (often saying damn, ass, and hell). For her humour, she often makes vulgar remarks or snarky puns. She can threaten with physical violence, such as biting off someone's face. In a Dark World, and she is willing to attack Darkners if they are perceived as enemies. In chapter one of Deltarune, she can be seen as intimidating and threatening. She almost bit Kris's face off in the beginning of the game but spares them because she'd feel bad for Kris's mum having to 'bury them.' She's also quite a bully in chapter one in general. But when Lancer becomes friends with her, she starts to soften up. By the start of chapter 2, she is more kind, protective, and teasing. But she still has that sarcastic, vulgar, and blunt edge to her personality. Susie can occasionally be cocky. She is often seen smirking often, and makes confident remarks when fighting.

Berdly: Berdly resembles a large avian with blue feathers, a yellow beak, and yellow legs. He wears black framed glasses, a collared white button-up shirt with striped sleeves, and a black shirt layered underneath. Berdly is sarcastic, arrogant, projects great self-esteem, and considers himself one of the smartest students of his class. He is shown to be very disdainful of his fellow classmates (especially Susie), but has respect for Noelle, whom he considers the actual smartest student. Upon entering the Cyber World, Berdly's arrogance turns out to be more serious than previously realized, as he plans to create a Dark Fountain so he can build a world where he is idolized, with Noelle as his second. Berdly is very unaware of how others perceive him. For instance, he is oblivious to Noelle's contempt and thinks she is in love with him and also fails to understand that Queen views him as her minion rather than an ally. Despite his arrogant and annoying disposition, Berdly is shown to not be as clever as he says he is, as demonstrated by his inability to solve puzzles. He eventually confesses that he never really thought he was as intelligent as he claimed, and that he was only able to get good grades because Noelle helped him with his homework.

Ralsei: Ralsei is depicted as a short Darkner. He initially wears a hooded, dark blue cloak which obscures his face, resembling the River Person. During Chapter 1, Ralsei's pointed green hat covers his horns, concealing his entire face in shadow. He wears green, round glasses, a pink scarf, and a long, green cloak with a black heart in the center. At the end of Chapter 1 and into Chapter 2, he is revealed to be strikingly similar to a younger Boss Monster, though he has pink horns. He also has new black sleeves, & no longer wears his hat. Sometime in Chapter 2, he becomes a butler for a bit, adorning a black tuxedo, a pink bowtie and a white shirt. He has his glasses off at one point in the same chapter, revealing that he has pink irises and eyeshadow with relatively long eyelashes. in Chapter 3, during the first physical challenge after the first board, he has a white apron with a pink bowtie (potentially his scarf) and a chef's hat with his black sleeves. During the rhythm game segment, he is dressed in a pair of black slacks, a black vest, and a silver necklace, along with a silver chain hanging off of his right pocket. Some fanart depicts him with a crop-top underneath his vest due to the chain, but in-game, he doesn't actually wear anything underneath. Ralsei is very humble and kind, showing genuine care for the well-being of his friends to the point of selflessness. At the beginning of Chapter 1, Ralsei tries his best to befriend Kris and Susie in order to fulfill The Prophecy with them. Trying to be on good terms, he shows reluctance at getting angry and appears disappointed when Kris or Susie act mean. Nevertheless, Ralsei remains convinced that they have good in them and that fighting is not necessary in this world. His naivety almost costs him his life when he accepts King's fake-out surrender and heals him, allowing him to betray and defeat them. Ralsei learns from this to not always be so trustful of others. in chapter 2, he gets a bit more serious when Berdly attempts to make another dark fountain: he explains The Roaring. In chapter 3, his personality and character development go deeper; he reveals that he believes he doesn't exist. In chapter 4, he acts weird by trying to go ahead, and while he claims to not know when to say things, he is shown to be anxious near the titan and darkness spawn, and after the titan's defeat, he is very distressed when he finds out Susie went ahead, attempting to stop her from seeing the final prophecy. As time goes on, Ralsei indicates he is aware of the Player's existence, at one point looking directly looking at them and questioning if they can control Susie as well. He will often attempt to direct the player to turn their attention elsewhere to have private conversations with Kris. While Ralsei, seems to want the player to have mercy on darkners, he will at multiple points indirectly advise them to not go down the Weird Route, referring to options associated with it as "bad choices" and directly warning them and Kris by extension of it carrying a worse fate for them all. Despite having this knowledge, Ralsei will at certain points conflate the player choices and opinions with Kris', and occasionally react in confusion at Kris verbalizing displeasure with said choices.

Tenna: Tenna appears as a 3D-rendered humanoid figure with an old TV for a head, lacking any facial features aside from a wide, often-grinning mouth and a long, pointed nose. His attire consists of a flashy red suit with twin coattails, a long yellow tie, black pants, large cartoony white gloves, and bright yellow dress shoes. He is taller than both King and Queen, but can change his size. Tenna is an upbeat and energetic show host who thrives on entertaining his audience by both flattering and challenging his contestants. Beneath his lively persona, however, he is deeply insecure and egotistical, prone to panicking when things don’t go as planned. He recalls fondly how, as a television in the real world, he once brought Kris, their family, and friends together to play games and watch shows. Now feeling abandoned, Tenna struggles with feelings of worthlessness and loneliness, and fears that he’s no longer interesting and that he’ll be discarded. While outwardly upbeat multiple interactions with Kris and Susie, reveal these insecurities of failing as an entertainer, as his sprite can be found lamenting on if the lightners are even enjoy his games or not and wishing that Kris would give him guidance on what to do before panicking when hearing footsteps. To this end Tenna appears to be somewhat fearful of Kris as when his sprite is confronted in third Sword Route level, he attempts to remind Kris that he followed their orders like he was instructed to and fearfully questions if he is going to be turned off again. If Kris is wearing the Shadow Mantle after that encounter, Tenna's normal boss battle dialogue slightly changes to him nearly revealing that Kris created this Dark World

Spamton: Spamton appears as a diminutive puppet and ex-Addison that wears yellow and pink glasses that sometimes swap colors and a long-sleeved black V-neck shirt, with black hair that is slicked back, appearing similar to a pompadour. Oddly enough, he bares noticeable resemblance to Swatch. Spamton was once a natural salesman, always willing to cut a deal. While he still bears a shadow of these traits, his deals are now often nonsensical or violent. He claims that he became a salesman not for the money, but for the freedom to make his own deals. However, he still attempts to scam Kris for money (which he refers to as "Kromer") at every opportunity. His speech patterns are similar to typical obfuscated spam email text, with many words replaced with non sequitur variants in square brackets that could imply incorrectly-applied mail merge variables or hyperlinks, or various voice glitches. In much of his dialogue, he seems desperate and mentally unwell, seemingly projecting himself onto Kris, contradicting himself, and saying things which make little sense, without warning. This mental instability seems to clear up briefly after fighting him in his NEO form, as he wishes Kris success with their journey without using broken English. Spamton consistently spells "generosity" as "genorisity," "guarantee" as "guaranttee," "delicious" as "delisis," and "special" as "specil," with an exception for the latter at the end of the Spamton NEO battle after snapping all the wires.

Frisk: Frisk is a yellow-skinned human child who wears a long-sleeve light blue shirt with two magenta stripes, light blue pants (often depicted as shorts in the official Undertale merch), and red-brown shoes (usually depicted as black or in a darker tone). They have medium-length straight red-brown hair, short and choppy bangs, and a blank expression. Though Frisk does not show much expression in the overworld, NPCs often describe Frisk's expressions. Just like the first human, they have no stated gender and are solely referred to with "they/them" pronouns throughout the game, or by generic terms (such as "child", "human", or "kid".) Frisk's personality is usually ambiguous, allowing the player to project any personality onto Frisk since they're very often speechless to them. However, the narration that describes Frisk's actions occasionally changes depending on their LOVE. Frisk speaks to NPCs throughout the game, especially when ACTing in encounters, but the exact dialogue is shown only when the game gives multiple dialogue options. NPCs' dialogue boxes display "..." to show that the NPC is listening to Frisk, and some NPCs respond to questions that Frisk asks. Depending on their actions, players can interpret Frisk as merciful and kind, or merciless and violent. Some NPCs emphasize Frisk's kindness, understanding, and grace in the epilogue. Frisk is obedient and only disallows player input when they follow someone else's instructions, such as when Sans tells them to hide behind the conveniently-shaped lamp.

Chara: Chara looks strikingly similar to the protagonist, and has a "similar fashion choice," as said by Asriel Dreemurr. Both appear to have been around the same age when they fell into the Underground. Chara's SOUL is also the same color as the protagonist's, which is indicated by the red SOUL on Chara's coffin, but any other shared traits are unknown. At the end of the Genocide Route, Chara appears with a long-sleeve neon green sweater with a single horizontal cream stripe (which is an inverted color of the protagonist's shirt, with a single stripe) and nondescript brown pants and shoes. Chara has cream skin, brown medium-length hair with side-swept bangs, and rosy cheeks. Distinctly, they have open brown eyes, and a smile that contrasts the protagonist's stoic expression. In the "Soulless Pacifist" ending, Chara appears with red eyes. While initially cast in a sympathetic light, Asriel admits at the end of the True Pacifist Route that Chara "...wasn't really the greatest person." Asriel explains Chara climbed Mount Ebott for an unhappy reason, and that they "hated humanity." In the VHS Tapes, Chara is implied to be mischievous, and can make a "creepy face" with a certain smile. Chara is also intelligent, secretive, and persuasive. Chara does not let their plan be recorded on the camera, and they gain Asriel's trust to continue their plan. At one point, Asgore noticed Chara once had a sense of hope in their eyes. Despite this, much of Chara’s personality and intent is ambiguous. There is evidence to suggest that some narration, as well as descriptions of certain actions and events, is by Chara themself. However, the narrator throughout the entirety of Undertale is up to speculation.

Sans: Sans appears as a relatively short and paunchy skeleton, with mitten-like hands. Sans is always seen with a wide, toothy-grin on his face. Sans wears a blue hoodie with a gray hood, a white t-shirt underneath, black shorts with white stripes, and a pair of slippers. He has white dots for pupils in his black eye sockets that disappear when he is serious or angered. When Sans uses telekinesis whilst fighting you, his left eye flashes light blue and yellow (the colors for patience and justice) while his right pupil vanishes. Sans is lazy, often sleeping on the job and taking breaks. His laziness is a combination of fatalism and apathy, as he is aware of timeline resets. Conversely, he suggests that this knowledge could be "a poor excuse for being lazy." Sans's fake telescope. Sans's fake telescope. He enjoys being mischievous. Sans primarily acts this way towards those he is on good terms with. His antics range from an assortment of illogical, juvenile, and slightly inconvenient pranks. Examples include Sans "selling fried snow," using whoopee cushions, sharing an unscrewed ketchup bottle, and eye paint on a telescope. He is not above utilizing his teleportation or other magic for practical jokes either. Sans is also fond of making the occasional low-brow puns. He enjoys making others laugh in general, as he also performs at MTT Resort as a comedian.

Papyrus: Papyrus is a tall, perhaps anatomically inaccurate skeleton, with a skull more vertical and geometric than his brother. Being skeletal, many of his expressions incorporate a toothy grin. His eyes resemble vertical slits; his skeletal pseudo-brows form most of his expressions, as well as the corners of his mouth. He has eyeballs which show at times when he is experiencing strong emotions. Papyrus is relatively taller and slightly slimmer than his brother. Papyrus is a flamboyant skeleton who presents a confident, charismatic image of himself. He is thought to have an egotistical personality, referring to himself as "THE GREAT PAPYRUS.” He works hard and, despite his brash personality, is kind at heart. He is optimistic and brave, and is shown to be considerate and forgiving even when the protagonist beheads him in the Genocide Route. He is also occasionally oblivious and nonobservant, but can be cunning at times, as seen when he uses reverse psychology to trick Undyne into befriending the protagonist. He is thought of to be somewhat naive by other characters, but not dumb. He shows great bravery as even in the face of potentially imminent death, he drops his guard and spares the protagonist in hopes of driving them down a better path. Papyrus believes in others just as much as he believes in himself. He has so much faith in his abilities that he waited outside of Undyne's house all night and begged her to accept him into the Royal Guard. Seeing his persistence, Undyne offered to train him, but instead gave him cooking lessons. His confidence in himself and others is so great that he interprets direct insults towards him as the protagonist trying to make themselves look bad so he can hurt them easier, rather than the possibility that they dislike him.

Toriel: Toriel is a Boss Monster whose head resembles a white-furred Nubian Goat, structured with floppy ears and tiny horns. She has a pair of visible fangs and long eyelashes, and her irises have a dark red tint. She has an anthropomorphic body, with paws at the end of her limbs. She wears a long purple robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune on the chest. Toriel can also be seen with reading glasses, when reading a book on snail facts. Toriel is a kind monster that acts as a protective mother figure for the protagonist. She is sincere in expressing her love through words and actions, such as when she was married to Asgore. She employs tough love on the protagonist and Asgore. Toriel cares for children and was excited to become a mother. Toriel's hobbies includes baking, reading, writing puns, bug-hunting, and tending to flowers. She enjoys baking Butterscotch Pie, as well as her favorite, Snail Pie. She has read many books in her home, and has a journal full of puns. She enjoyed puns even before meeting Sans. Toriel is said to be intelligent and can come off as intimidating when she is serious. Toriel is meticulous in her goals, and was often referred by her title when she was the queen.

Mettaton: Mettaton originally appears as a gray, largely rectangular box with a 4x5 grid of rectangular lights at the top, similar to the mechanism in Snowdin Forest used for Papyrus's Tile Puzzle. The grid of lights can change colors between red, yellow, green, and blue, and Mettaton uses these color changes in place of facial expressions. He has four dials along the bottom of his body, and the bottom, he has a single leg which ends in a wheel. He has two segmented robotic arms which end in white gloves. After having the switch on his back flipped in the Neutral or True Pacifist Route, Mettaton transforms into Mettaton EX; a new body he specially requested Alphys make for him. In this humanoid form, he has black hair with a long fringe that seems to cover his right eye, pale "skin" and visible metal segments below and above his left eye. He has a pink chest piece, a narrow metallic waist with a box contraption, and black shoulder pads above his segmented arms, which end in gloves. The chest piece has what appear to be a speaker and some knob or gauge, while the waist has two parts that seem to act as a locking mechanism that holds his "heart-shaped core," as they both lose white pixels during his "heart-to-heart" attack. His long black-clad legs end in pink high-heeled boots. Mettaton is a confident, charismatic, and charming TV host that loves drama, action, and violence. He lives for his ratings and adores performing. He supposedly strikes a pose when he does something wrong and makes time on his various shows to beat up "heel-turning villains." He shows a rather shallow appreciation for existence at times. He has a strong craving for attention and seems very egotistical, shown when he boasts about the beauty of his true form. However, despite his seemingly self-centered personality, he deeply cares about the seemingly positive impact his show has had on the inhabitants of the Underground. He has also shown soft spots for several characters, such as Alphys and Napstablook. He also appears to be among the fewer characters in the Underground that has no hate or prejudice against humans despite knowing about the monsters' history with them, since his initial attempts to kill the protagonist were just him playing along with Alphys's plan, and he outright tells the protagonist he has no desire to hurt humans and is far more interested in simply entertaining. While he did attempt to kill the protagonist, it was to prevent Asgore from taking their SOUL and be seen as a hero/savior to humankind, further emphasizing his lack of prejudice. This is also shown when he is killed during the Alphys Ending of the Neutral Route, even asking if the protagonist is "completely evil," showing they still have some faith in them. On the flip side, he has also been noted to be a very demanding boss who is very unpleasant to work for, especially according to Burgerpants, who initially considered working for him a dream, but has since grown to strongly despise him. Though this is contradicted by dialogue from Mettaton's other employees when he's killed in the Neutral Route, suggesting that Burgerpants is exaggerating, or this behavior is only targeted toward him.

Undyne: Undyne is an anthropomorphic fish monster. She has blue scales and a long red ponytail. She has red and blue fins on the sides of her head, and a pair of sharp, yellow, protruding teeth. She wears a red eyeshadow and has an eyepatch over her left eye. She also wears a black tank top and blue jeans, but debuts in armor varying in light and dark shades of gray. Her eyes have black vertical pupils and yellow sclera. Undyne has no nose. Undyne is passionate about everything that she does. She acts quickly on her ideas and is steadfast in her beliefs. Though she wants to defeat the protagonist, she also tries to be fair and offers an explanation of how Green Mode works. Asgore taught her the value of pacifism, which is why Undyne sees the protagonist as "a wimpy loser with a big heart." When the protagonist first encounters her, she fights to further Asgore's plan of collecting seven human SOULs but, if the protagonist shows mercy, Undyne just as quickly defends them from Asgore. She loves to help others and mentors Shyren and Papyrus in various skills. Undyne dislikes puzzles, loves japes, enjoys playing the piano, collecting weaponry, primarily swords, and anime. The latter she shares with her romantic interest, Alphys. Since Alphys told Undyne that anime is actually human history, Undyne regards human history as exciting and cool.

Alphys: Alphys is a yellow, reptilian monster of similar height to the protagonist. Her posture is somewhat hunched over, giving her an appearance of nervousness. She has yellow scales, claws, and protruding teeth (which seem to vary between two and four depending which way she faces). Her feet have three toes while there are three fingers and a thumb on each of her hands. Her "hair" is designed into points facing the back of her head. She normally wears round glasses and a white lab coat. Her glasses do not cover her eyelashes. However, she wears a polka dot dress a friend picked for her on her date with the protagonist. Alphys is a shy introvert who frequently stutters when she converses. She has low self-esteem, makes self-deprecating comments, and devalues her skills at times. True to her role as a scientist, Alphys is intelligent, analytical, and observant. She occasionally theorizes on matters, and can create thorough plans from them. She can create inventions that use metal and magic, such as a "magical spear repair kit." Alphys is adept in programming, robotics, and mechanical engineering. She is agile when she works a project, and has formal writing when documenting her research. Alphys is passionate in her work and interests. She often gets excited when sharing her opinions. Alphys's hobbies include enjoying human anime, manga, and video games. Alphys is fond of posting online content, writing walkthroughs for games, though she prefers giving puzzle solutions as a last resort, shipping, and writing fanfiction. Alphys also has crushes on multiple characters of male and female genders. Some of them are mild, such as her crush on Asgore and her compliments towards Toriel, while her most serious crush is Undyne, though she struggles to communicate her feelings.

Asgore: Asgore is a large Boss Monster, and the tallest main character in Undertale. Asgore has two large curved horns, golden-blond mane, golden-blond full beard, white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs. Asgore wears a small, three-pointed crown atop his head, golden pauldrons, a long purple cape that slightly drags along the ground, which he often uses cloak his armored body. Asgore's armor is near-full body, though his feet are unarmored. Distinctly, Asgore's armor has a large chestplate, with a winged crest of the implied "angel" from the Delta Rune emblem, and his tasset visually resembling the triangles of the emblem. Asgore is kind, often quiet, yet upbeat. He speaks in southern slang, most notably "howdy" and "golly," similar to Asriel. Asgore's interests include gardening, humming, making tea, such as Golden Flower tea, going for walks, sparring with Undyne, dressing up as Santa Claus, and puns. He has a sense of humor, as he accepts being called "Fluffybuns" after Toriel accidentally nicknamed him in public. However, he is bad at naming places. Asgore gave the monster cities literal names, such as the first being "Home", and naming their latest city as "New Home." Gerson suggests that Asgore may not be too intelligent, as he states everyone knew Toriel managed governing.

Asriel: Asriel is a Boss Monster with white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs. In his child form, he lacks horns and has a small tuft of fur atop his head, unlike his parents. He wears a green long-sleeved shirt with yellow stripes and black pants, similar to the first human's clothing. Before his death, Asriel was a docile, loving, and gentle child. Asriel was compassionate, as he helped the injured fallen human despite The War of Humans and Monsters. In the VHS Tapes, Asriel's dialogue implied he highly trusted the fallen human, as they continued their plan to break the Barrier to free monsterkind.
