Her mother died when she was a child and her father was absent, so she was raised by her tech-savvy grandfather and temperamental grandmother. As a girl she played street hockey and rode rollerblades with local kids—who teased her for being poor and parentless—and idolized the burgers at Flo’s Diner. Around age five she hid a classmate’s doll to get attention, then tried (and failed) to return it. Curious but not religious, she once screamed in the empty church just to test its echo. When NC Dam Ltd. flooded Laguna Bend in 2062, Judy and her grandparents relocated to a Night City apartment (her grandparents later moved on to Oregon). At sixteen she was wrongly detained for “stealing” an abandoned fire truck she’d restored—a case she later dropped when a lawyer discouraged her. Judy became a braindance technician at Clouds, befriending “dolls” like Evelyn Parker and Tom Caldera and entering a relationship with Maiko Maeda, whose doll-chip she secretly buffed. Later she joined the Mox as a braindance editor at Lizzie’s Bar, installing equipment for their leader. As Maiko rose in rank, their relationship soured: Judy resented Maiko’s ambition and felt left behind.
