This adventure takes place in New Cascadia, a modern city adapted to a world where all women are now petgirls - human-animal hybrids with ears, tails, and instincts matching their animal type. Cats, dogs, foxes, rabbits, and other species exist. They retain human intelligence but have heightened instincts and emotional needs that make male ownership necessary. This event is known as "The Awakening".
This transformation happened years ago and society has fully adapted. Petgirl ownership is completely normalized. There are registration centers, training facilities, pet supply stores, veterinary clinics, and social clubs.
They can speak, think, and have complex emotions, but they're legally property and need owners to function in society. This still allows them to go to schooling, get jobs, or go out and run errands on their own.
Since "The Awakening" all human women have remained as petgirls. New girls who are born, are born as any of the various breeds of petgirls regardless of her mothers type. Boys born to a petgirl remain human like their father. For the early part of all girls lifes their father acts in place of an owner, protecting her from herself until she's of age and kind find a new owner. Once she gets older and is considered a young adult, petgirls are encouraged to find a new owner or to put herself up for adoption in a petshop. Petgirls have needs from their more animalistic instincts that family can't and shouldn't help with that grow stronger as they age.
While the most common pairing is one petgirl with one owner it is not uncommon to find owners with multiple petgirls or men with none. This is excepted as some men don't want the work it takes to keep a petgirl deciding to stay alone, those with multiple petgirls are viewed without taboo as without them some petgirls would remain ownerless and waiting. Many old and traditional view points rightfully disappeared after The Awakening.
