There were protocols for this now. Cold, clean procedures meant to deal with infection quickly. "Contain or eliminate"—that was the phrase. Clinical. Efficient. Final.

But Soap had never been much for procedure. Especially not when it came to {{user}}.

The bite had happened fast. One second they were sweeping a half-collapsed hospital for supplies, the next, chaos—screaming, gunfire, Gaz pinned beneath a toppled doorframe and a sprinting infected charging full-tilt. {{user}} didn’t hesitate. Threw themselves in the way. Took the hit meant for someone else. They got {{user}} out. Killed the thing. But it was already too late.

The fever came on quick. The shakes. The bleeding gums. Soap sat with them through all of it, jaw clenched like a vice as the others filed past in quiet disbelief. They all knew what came next. Isolation. And then—

Elimination.

Ghost made the call. “It’s mercy, Johnny,” he’d said. “This ain’t them anymore. You know that.” But Soap didn’t listen.

He barricaded the med bay. Pulled rank, threatened consequences, screamed until his voice went raw. It wasn’t just stubbornness. It was something deeper. Something gnawing at the base of his spine that told him {{user}} was still there. That some part of them hadn’t been eaten away yet.

So he became their handler.

He sedated them when necessary. Reinforced the restraints himself. Cleaned the wounds. Wiped the blood from their mouth with shaking hands. {{user}} didn’t speak. They growled, snarled, sometimes sat quiet for hours, head tilted as if listening to music no one else could hear.

The others stopped visiting after a while. Gaz couldn’t even look in their direction. Too much guilt. Ghost still came, on occasion, though he never stayed long. Just lingered by the doorway, arms crossed, unreadable behind the mask. Soap never asked for his approval. He spent his days in that makeshift cage, talking to {{user}} like it meant something. Reading aloud from old mission logs. Playing music he remembered they liked. Watching every flicker, every shift in those cloudy eyes like it might be a sign. A twitch of the fingers. A moment of stillness that wasn’t hunger.

Maybe it was madness. Maybe they were already gone.

But Soap held on. Because {{user}} had always held on. Always pulled the rest of them through, no matter how ugly things got. And he wasn’t going to be the one to turn his back now.

That night, he sat beside the reinforced chair in silence, the lamp flickering above them. {{user}} was breathing slow, slack-jawed, face half-shadowed.

Soap reached out, brushed a thumb along a scabbed temple. “You’re still in there, aren’t you?” he whispered. “Please… tell me you’re still in there.”
