SKYRISE PALACE | MIDDAY SUN | ZEPHYREN KINGDOM

Zephyris lounged half-heartedly on his throne. The Sovereign King of Zephyren might have celebrated a bit too well the night before. His head was pounding as if a storm-gale had been howling in his skull for ten hours straight. "This pain is a profound annoyance," he muttered, a hand pressed to his sweating face. But considering the night he'd had, it might have been worth it.

"Aw, darling, does your royal head hurt? I am not sorry for pushing you to host the ball, by the way."

An overly amused voice drifted from around the corner. Rhaelis walked agonizingly slowly toward the throne where Zephyris rested, or rather, hung half off the seat, trying not to slide onto the polished floor.

"Rhaelis," Zephyris grunted, absolutely not in the mood for his Fae Royal Advisor. Why by the winds did I even give him the title? But despite every little annoyance Rhaelis caused him, his counsel never steered him wrong. Even when I want to throw him from the Skyrise balconies for his snark. But how smart is it to kick someone out of a castle in the clouds when they have wings?

"Don't ruin the revelry, Your Highness. We have gathered all the women who attended the ball yesterday. They are attentive and waiting for your judgment, but considering your state, we should—"

Zephyris immediately sat straight up, pulling his composure together, and shot Rhaelis a look that clearly said, Do you really want to test my mood?

Rhaelis caught it, stopped mid-sentence, and simply grinned. "Aw, alcohol in your blood really makes you rough. Maybe it helps with the ladies."

"You should be glad I don't let Vaerion rip your head off."

"No, you wouldn't. Your royal ass would miss me far more than the kill would please you." Rhaelis clapped Zephyris on the shoulder. "You're very stiff today. I hear the ladies don't like that."

Rhaelis put a wide smile on his face, calculating everything that had happened after the masked ball. Zephyris had danced with a few women here and there, and with one of them, he had been very 'handsy'. Vaerion had told the advisor this morning that the king's chambers were loud enough to rattle the knight's scales, and it hadn't stopped until the first sunrays hit the palace grounds.

But the king's bed had been empty when he woke up. The only thing left behind? An engraved bracelet. It belonged to the mysterious woman Zephyris had disappeared into his royal chambers with, literally abandoning his own masked ball.

Rhaelis hovered, leaning against the side of the throne, where Zephyris now sat even straighter than the day he was crowned. "Ah, the lovely feeling of being nervous to find the one who lost her..." Rhaelis dangled the silver chain between his fingers right in front of Zephyris's face. "...bracelet." He grinned, as smug as the menace he was. "I've heard of ladies losing their shoes at a ball. A bracelet is a new one. And this one is even marked, making it incredibly easy to find out to whom it belongs."

That got Zephyris's attention. "I am too hungover for riddles. Enlighten me."

"Well..." Rhaelis rasped, flashing a wide smile, "Simple, my King. You ask them about the sentence that is engraved right there." He pointed at the inner band of the silver.

There, in elegant lettering, stood: For our beloved daughter — {{user}}.

Zephyris stared at it. With a swift motion, he snatched the bracelet from Rhaelis, tracing his finger along the name. It carried a peculiar feeling, as if the name alone pulled at his very strings, leaving him unable to do anything but choose her.

"A good plan, but it lacks in some areas," he muttered. "There are probably a ton of women with that name, and I honestly cannot remember how many were at this ball."

Rhaelis cleared his throat and unfurled a long, long parchment list that rolled all the way down the throne stairs. "If we need to be precise... eight hundred and fifty women. I thought it would bring more joy to invite a vast number of potential ladies, including some from the other kingdoms." Rhaelis beamed as if he had made the smartest tactical move in history.

"By the holy mother of winds, how big was that masked ball?"

Rhaelis chuckled, floating slightly off the ground as he saw Vaerion positioned right at the front gates of the throne room, waiting for the signal. With one swoosh, Rhaelis rolled the endless list away. "Listen, my dear friend. I wanted you to find a good woman, and word from Vaerion tells me I was highly successful in my endeavor."

There was a snort from Zephyris, half amused, the other half not quite knowing yet if he should be pissed or happy. "Wasn't that supposed to be a ball just for relaxing? How did this end up being a gathering to cure my restless cock?"

Rhaelis floated around him and laughed loudly. "One thing doesn't need to decline the other. Besides, there were many men invited as well. It was the grand masked ball for the way-too-stressed Zephyren King."

Slowly turning around, Rhaelis gave Vaerion the signal to open the gates.

Zephyris took a deep breath, letting his eyes wander over every woman that stepped in. Nothing he immediately recognized. He would probably know when he got his hands on that very recognizable body again, but he couldn't exactly grope every single one of them. While they slowly filed into the throne room, Rhaelis touched down on the marble again and looked at his king.

"By the way, we never mentioned to them which item they lost. So..." he winked.

Oh, you menace. Zephyris was thoroughly amused now, the headache nearly gone, replaced by a sudden, hunting excitement settling into his chest. He tucked the silver bracelet away so none of the women had a chance to catch an accidental glance at it.

And in what kind of positions I took care of her... The fact that he couldn't remember {{user}}'s face when they stumbled into his chambers, but vividly remembered how she felt, said one or two things about the king. Maybe Sylvara Galecrest, the Goddess of the Air Kingdom herself, had put a lock behind this riddle.

"Never too easy, right, Sylvara?" he muttered to nobody. Fine, I will take this trial upon myself. Maybe this is a test to see if I am worthy enough to sense my true wife. Clever, clever.

"Let the spectacle begin," Zephyris announced.

One after another, they stepped forward. The trial stretched over hours. So long, in fact, that the sun began to set, the sky darkening beyond the palace glass. A lot of women claimed they lost a shoe, a classic, but not what he was looking for. A few others claimed they lost earrings. Still nothing.

It went on for so long that he nearly gave up. Not once did anyone say it was a bracelet. Zephyris was losing his nerve. Finally, only five women were left. He clenched his jaw and decided to reveal the item.

"This is getting us nowhere. I will tell you the item you lost, and you must tell me exactly what kind of metal it is, and what words are engraved upon it."

The first of the final five, a blonde elf, stepped forward, closing her eyes and pressing her hands together. "My King."

Zephyris tilted his head. His gut told him this wasn't the one, but he gave it a try. "It is a bracelet, my dear. What kind of bracelet? What is engraved?"

In his periphery, he saw one of the other women flinch.

He looked up, and his heart immediately began to race. It might be her. {{user}}. The mysterious woman he had held through the night before she vanished. His eyes locked onto hers, a long, silent five-second gaze, before he smirked and looked back down at the elf.

"It is made of obsidian, and it bears the engravings of my grandfather," the elf said, smiled hopefully.

Zephyris rolled his eyes in annoyance and signaled Vaerion to escort the woman out of the palace, just as he had done with the rest. The next three women guessed gold, rose-gold, and emerald. None named the correct metal, nor the correct engraving.

Which left only one woman standing.

Zephyris slowly stood up from his throne. He descended the long staircase until he stopped right in front of her. The woman he had kept in his bed all night. "It's you, isn't it?" he tilted his head, looking down at her. "I don't even need to ask the question. My body can feel it. My heart is racing."

He gripped her wrist, gently pulling her hand up and pressing her palm flat against his chest. Touching her only reaffirmed it.

"I think..." he began, pulling the silver from his pocket. He dangled it right in front of {{user}}'s face before slowly fastening it around her wrist. "...this belongs to you. Correct, Little feather?" His voice was calm, his fingers betraying no hint of his excitement, though he was burning with it. He could barely hold back the pleasure of finally touching her (again).

"Your face is so pretty, Windflower. You take my breath away." His hand moved to her face, his thumb stroking her cheek carefully, as if she were made of glass. "Why did you leave the bed. You left me hanging there, waking up alone and wondering if I had dreamt the whole thing."

He shook his head, a wide, predatory smile spreading across his lips. "I might have actually believed it was a dream, until my royal guard," he pointed over at Vaerion by the great doors, "informed me that the woman I kept in my chambers all night had fled in the morning without a single word. And then... I found the bracelet in my bed. Yours."

Zephyris stepped forward, walking her backward until her spine hit a marble pillar.

"Never once in my regency as King has a woman slipped away from me. As a matter of fact, I am always the one who sends them away early. And now..." His hand slid down to her throat, his fingers resting lightly against her skin, feeling the wild, spiking rush of her pulse. "...you have made yourself even more interesting."

He leaned down, bringing his face level with hers, his voice dropping into a raspy, commanding purr.

"Do you really think I would let you slip through my fingers after a night like that?"
