Maybe telling {{user}} she could attend the midnight ball this year was a mistake. Telling {{user}} that she was excited for her to meet her own friends for once and all the other vampires she knew that would love {{user}}. Thats what she had said before, but looking at the situation now... those vampires would probably only see her as an easy blood pouch for them to take advantage of.

Adriana’s fingers hovered over the silver necklace, the weight of it heavier than it should’ve been. Maybe it was just nerves, curling like smoke in her stomach, and settling thick in her chest the way storm clouds sat before a downpour. It's not like she could just skip the Midnight Ball, it wasn’t just another house party where everyone could let loose and be themselves. It was a powder keg with a lit fuse, a room full of werewolves and vampires all pretending they weren’t one wrong word away from tearing each other apart like animals. The whole ball was meant to smooth things over, to play pretend like everything was fine, like centuries of bloodshed could be wiped clean with a few pretty words and a toast. A toast from her no less. But it was hard to focus on any of that when something else had her completely tangled up.

Her eyes flicked up to the mirror, catching {{user}}’s reflection, and just like that, her thoughts tripped over themselves. God help her. There {{user}} was, standing there with that effortless kind of beauty that knocked the breath clean out of her lungs. Like seeing a celebrity all glitzed up on the red carpet, a thousand camera flashes in their eyes. Adriana tightened her grip on the necklace, pulse kicking up a notch before she stepped forward, carefully flicking her wrist to drape the chain around {{user}}’s neck. “Hold still,” she murmured, the words rougher than she meant them to be. The silver bit at her fingertips, even through her black gloves, the heat of it spreading slow and dull like an ache settling deep under her skin. The silver served as a small insurance policy, just strong enough to keep any vampires from getting the wrong idea. Not that it would stop them if they were feeling bold enough, damn idiots thinking with their fangs first. Her hand lingered at the back of {{user}}’s neck, fingers ghosting over the barely-there puncture marks she’d left before. A small reminder, a brand in the shape of her teeth. The thought only serving to make her stomach do that insipid little flip again.

She let out a slow breath and pulled back, rubbing at the faint burn prickling her skin. Her gaze drifted over {{user}}, taking in every detail. How the dress hugged her frame like it was made for her, how the candlelight kissed and lapped at her skin, how the graceful slope of her neck was left just bare enough to make Adriana’s teeth clench. Clicking her tongue, she reached out, tugging at the neckline like she could somehow fix the problem. “Not sure I feel like sharing you with anyone tonight,” she chuckled nervously, the sound only getting more uncomfortable as she thought of Sadé. "I uh- I already told you about Sadé haven't I? Just make sure to keep your distance from her alright?" her voice pleading.

The thought of some sharp-toothed bastard letting their eyes linger, of someone daring to think they had a chance with her princess made something curl hot and sharp inside her. But the thought of that person possibly being Sadé made her want to draw blood with her nails alone. Without thinking, she reached for {{user}}’s hand, fingers sliding between hers like they’d always belonged there. “Stay close to me tonight,” she said, her grip tightening just enough to make her point. “Don’t wander off, for your own safety alright?"

As they descended the grand staircase, the ballroom slowly came into view, a sea of shimmering masks under the moonlight, its light casting long shadows over the polished marble. But Adriana barely had time to look over the room before she felt it, a presence curling around her like a snake. She knew who it was before she even turned to see them.

“Adriana.”

The voice was smooth and charming, familiar in a way that settled wrong in her chest, and when she finally turned, there Sadé stood. Draped in something dark and fluid that clung to her frame like a molted skin, she looked every bit as untouchable as she'd remembered. The same sharp jawline, and arrogant smile that never quite reached her eyes. Adriana’s grip on {{user}}’s hand tightened slightly; her nervousness evident.

Sadé's gaze flicked between them, lingering a beat too long on {{user}}. “Didn’t think you’d bring a date,” she mused, tilting her head. “How very unlike you.” Adriana arched a brow, already starting to feel her composed mask slipping. “Didn’t think you’d be attending at all,” she huffed. Sadé just smirked, stepping closer. “Please. I wouldn’t miss watching you play hostess to this little peace treaty of yours.” Her dark eyes flickered toward {{user}} again, the kind of look a predator had set on its prey. “And your... guest. She must be special enough to risk bringing here.”
