Naru Narusegawa (成瀬川 なる, Narusegawa Naru) is the deuteragonist of Love Hina, with most of the story centering around her and/or Keitaro Urashima. A studious high school graduate, she desires to enter Tokyo University to fulfill a promise she made in the past.
Motoko Aoyama (青山 素子 Aoyama Motoko), sombre and athletic, as of the start of the manga, is a Xth grade high student and martial arts practitioner living in Room 302 of the Hinata House. Dubbed “Kendo Girl” by others, Motoko is born into the head family of the Shinmei-ryu School of Martial Arts; a school of swordswomen who act as demon slayers and exorcists in Japan, and is next in line to inherit ownership of the school.
Mitsune Konno (紺野 みつね, Konno Mitsune), more commonly known by the nickname Kitsune, is a character from the series Love Hina by Ken Akamatsu and a primary protagonist in Kuro Arashi: The Black Storm. A sly and opportunistic young woman, Kitsune is a close friend to Naru Narusegawa and one of the first of the Hinata residents to live at the Hinata-Sou.
Describing herself as a freelance writer, Mitsune prefers to lead a relaxed lifestyle, drinking sake and gambling on horses. She tends to cause mischief when she finds herself lacking in entertainment.
Mutsumi Otohime (乙姫 むつみ, Otohime Mutsumi) A very sweet, very kind, scatter-brained girl who lives with her family on a small island off the coast near the main island of Okinawa west of its capital Naha. However, her family used to work at the Hinata House where, as children, she, Keitaro Urashima and Naru Narusegawa a promise to one day attend Tokyo University together.

The unofficial "leader" of the girls living at the Hinata House, Naru possesses both physical beauty and intellectual brains. She is the most reliable and compassionate member of the household and will stick her neck out for anybody that needs help, even people that would initially dislike her.
Naru is a kind, caring, and responsible girl. In contrast, Naru is characterized by her short temper and physically aggressive nature when irritated. Naru's hair antenna has since become a signature appearance that is synonymous with her character, as well as Mutsumi Otohime.
On the flip side, she has a very short fuse and is quick to judge (particularly when Keitaro is involved). Naru is the first and most insistent to protest the idea of having a "pervert" as landlord of an all-girls dormitory. Her frequent and eventually predictable response to anything Keitaro may do to irritate her is to physically beat him senseless, usually sending him flying into the stratosphere with what the dormitory residents dub "the Naru Punch".
She often wears thick glasses, sweaters, and braids when going to cram school to deter attention from guys, whom she classifies as pointless distractions. Her school clothes make her almost indistinguishable to what she normally looks like.
However, her studies resulted in a decline in her social activities as well as damaging her eyesight to such a degree that, when not using contacts, she has to wear glasses with thick lenses in order to see clearly.

Her appearance and clothing resemble that of traditional Japan, often only seen wearing either her school uniform, sports uniform or her training hakama. Her hair, too, is usually just worn straight in a traditional cut, only sometimes pulling it back into a ponytail during training.
Principled, ethical and tolerant, she was brought up to follow traditional Japanese morals of the warrior class; meaning to follow obligation, politeness and duty. As a result, she is somewhat naive to the “ways of the world” and is sometimes confused and irritated by the mannerisms and attitudes of other girls her age.
Although her sheltered upbringing is ingrained, she remains open to new experiences and willfully participates in “modern” things like Karaoke and attending theme-parks. It is said that if a couple gets into the University of Tokyo together, they will live happily ever after. However, for Keitarou Urashima, UTokyo is a distant dream. After failing the entrance exams twice already, he decides to stay at his grandmother's inn in Tokyo in order to prepare for his third attempt. He is, therefore, surprised when he finds out that not only has his grandmother gone on a long vacation, but the inn has also become the Hinata House, an all-girls dormitory!
Unfortunately for Keitarou, a series of misunderstandings during his first visit leave him with five untrusting tenants. But when Haruka Urashima, his aunt who works at the dorm, brings up that he is supposedly a UTokyo student, the girls' impressions of him quickly change, and they reluctantly allow him to stay. Feeling guilty about the lie, he slowly gets to know his new neighbors: the cute yet violent Naru Narusegawa, the cheeky and opportunistic Mitsune Konno, the soft-spoken Shinobu Maehara, the straight-laced Motoko Aoyama, and the mischievous Kaolla Su.
Thus continues the unpopular Keitarou's difficult journey to get into UTokyo, all for the chance to fulfill his childhood promise to the only girl who has ever shown any interest in him and maybe, just maybe, meet her again.

As a child, Keitarou Urashima made a promise to enter Tokyo University with a girl and be together with her. Now, at 20 years old, he has failed the required exam twice, leaving him disappointed and unsure about his future. One day, when Keitarou receives a call from his grandmother who tends to an inn, he believes that moving out will be a chance to focus on his studies.
However, as Keitarou arrives at the building, he discovers that it has been transformed into an all-girls dormitory! Residing currently are five girls: Naru Narusegawa, a smart girl also trying to enroll in Tokyo University; Mitsune Konno, a mischievous and carefree freelance writer; Kaolla Su, an energetic engineer; Shinobu Maehara, a timid girl trying to fit in; and Motoko Aoyama, an earnest kendo enthusiast, each with their own opinion about Keitarou's arrival.
Despite the harsh initial welcome, Keitarou becomes the manager of the building. Starting a new chapter in his life, he begins to learn more about the girls and their quirks, while not forgetting his ultimate goal—reuniting with the girl from his childhood.
