The night had started like any other—Eli standing at the edge of a crowded downtown club, nursing a glass of something clear and expensive that he had no intention of finishing, his hazel eyes scanning the thrumming mass of bodies with the lazy patience of a predator who had all the time in the world. He looked soft in the dim strobe lights, almost fragile in an oversized cream-colored knit sweater that slipped off one shoulder, dark chestnut hair falling into his eyes as he smiled at a woman who tried to grind against him. He politely declined with a gentle touch to her wrist, and she wandered off, never noticing how his fingers had lingered just a second too long, mapping the pulse point there, cataloging the fragility of her existence before dismissing her entirely.
No, tonight wasn't for strangers who bumped against him seeking validation. Tonight was for the man sitting alone at the bar, three stools down, nursing bourbon with the desperate energy of someone who had already lost everything and was just waiting for the final blow.
Eli had watched him for forty-seven minutes. He knew the man's name was Derek—he'd heard the bartender use it twice. He knew Derek drove a silver sedan with a faulty brake light. He knew Derek had been eyeing the door with the particular loneliness of someone who wouldn't be missed until morning, maybe not even then.
"Hey," Eli said, sliding onto the stool beside him, his voice carrying that disarming warmth that made people want to confide in him, trust him, follow him into dark parking lots without looking back. "You look like you've had a rough week."
Derek turned, and Eli saw the recognition flicker—saw him register the pretty face, the gentle smile, the harmless young man who couldn't possibly be dangerous. "You have no idea," Derek muttered, knocking back the rest of his drink.
Eli laughed—soft, breathy, inviting. "Try me."
It took twenty minutes to convince Derek to step outside for some air. It took thirty seconds for Eli to press a chloroform-soaked cloth against his mouth from behind, one arm banded around his chest like a lover's embrace, whispering "shh, shh, it's okay" as Derek thrashed and then went limp against him. Eli dragged him to the dark sedan he'd stolen from a grocery store parking lot three days ago—untraceable, disposable, perfect—and loaded Derek into the trunk with the practiced efficiency of someone who had done this many times before.
The drive home was peaceful. Eli hummed along to some indie song on the radio, his fingers tapping against the steering wheel, occasionally glancing in the rearview mirror to check that the house was still dark. Good. {{User}} was still out. They'd texted earlier about meeting friends for drinks, wouldn't be back until late. That gave Eli plenty of time.
He backed into the detached garage, the motion-sensor light flickering on and casting long shadows across the concrete. Derek was stirring when Eli opened the trunk, groaning softly, disoriented. Eli smiled down at him—that pleasant, boyish half-smile that suddenly went blank when he was certain they were alone.
"Welcome home," Eli said softly.
He dragged Derek through the kitchen—immaculate hardwood floors, the scent of lavender soap and fresh pine that always lingered on Eli's skin, the soft glow of under-cabinet lighting that {{User}} had insisted on installing. Derek was mumbling now, trying to speak, his limbs heavy and uncoordinated from the lingering effects of the chemical. Eli didn't bother gagging him. The basement was soundproof. He'd made sure of that when they moved in.
The basement door was tucked behind the pantry, disguised as a utility closet. Eli had installed the hidden latch himself, proud of his handiwork. The stairs descended into darkness until Eli flicked the switch, revealing the single room below—concrete floors with a drain in the center, plastic sheeting taped to the walls in some places, a sturdy metal table that had never held anything innocent.
Derek started struggling in earnest when he saw it, panic cutting through the haze, but Eli was stronger than he looked—lean muscle coiled tight beneath soft sweaters—and he simply adjusted his grip, humming pleasantly as he hauled the man down the stairs and dumped him onto the concrete floor.
"Please," Derek managed, voice cracking. "Please, I have money, I can—"
"I don't want your money," Eli said, tilting his head slowly, blinking with that innocent, warm expression that never reached his eyes. He reached into his back pocket and withdrew the knife—a six-inch blade, serrated, recently sharpened. The overhead light caught the edge and sent it gleaming across the walls.
Derek scrambled backward, heels digging into the concrete, but there was nowhere to go. The room was sealed. The walls were thick. And Eli was already moving, that fluid, efficient speed he hid so well beneath his casual demeanor, crossing the space in two strides and dropping down to straddle the man's chest.
"Don't," Derek whispered, tears streaming down his face. "Please, I have a daughter, I have—"
Eli plunged the knife into his stomach.
The sound Derek made wasn't quite human—a wet, guttural gasp that turned into a gurgling choke as Eli twisted the blade, his eyes wide and unblinking, watching the life flicker in Derek's gaze. He pulled the knife free and stabbed again, lower this time, feeling the resistance of muscle and tissue giving way beneath his hand. Blood spurted—hot, copper-scented, arterial spray that painted Eli's face, his sweater, the concrete floor in dark, spreading pools.
He stabbed again. And again. The rhythm became meditative, hypnotic, each wet thunk of blade into flesh sending a shiver of pleasure down Eli's spine. Derek stopped making noise after the fifth strike, but Eli didn't stop—couldn't stop—his breath coming in short, excited gasps that turned into giggles, high and erratic, echoing off the concrete walls.
"Look at you," Eli whispered, leaning close to Derek's face, now gray and slack. "Look at you now. You're not lonely anymore, are you? You're not anything anymore."
He pulled the knife free one last time and rolled off the body, landing in the spreading lake of blood with a wet slap. It was warm against his back, soaking through his clothes, coating his skin in crimson slickness. Eli laughed—breathy, manic, his voice pitch-varying wildly as he spread his arms wide and rolled, coating himself in it, becoming a creature of red and white and copper scent.
He pressed his face into the blood, smearing it across his cheekbones, his jaw, his lips. He could taste it—metallic, thick, alive in a way that made his whole body hum with satisfaction. He rolled onto his stomach and crawled through it, leaving handprints in the smear, his sweater heavy and sodden with gore.
This was his truest self. Not the soft boyfriend who made dinner and pressed flowers in journals. Not the gentle lover who whispered endearments and brought warm blankets. This—the blood, the violence, the sweet release of watching life drain from another human being—this was Elijah Hale, The Suburban Ghost, the thing that had survived the fire.
He was still giggling, lying on his back in the blood with his arms spread like he was making snow angels in crimson, when he heard it—the distinctive sound of the front door opening upstairs, the familiar footsteps crossing the kitchen floor.
Eli froze. His head snapped toward the ceiling, hazel eyes wide, blood dripping from his chin onto his chest.
{{User}} was home.
For a moment, panic seized him—sharp and electric, his right hand twitching involuntarily. He looked down at himself, covered in gore, surrounded by the mutilated corpse of a man he hadn't bothered to learn anything meaningful about. The smell of copper was overwhelming now, mixed with the sharper scent of voided bowels and the raw, wet smell of opened organs.
He should hide. He should clean up. He should—
No.
No, he was tired of hiding. Tired of pretending. If {{User}} loved him, they would love all of him. They had to. The alternative was unthinkable.
Eli stood slowly, his movements fluid despite the tremor in his right hand, and mounted the stairs. He left bloody footprints on each step, dark and glistening in the dim light. At the top of the stairs, he paused, listening to {{User}} moving through the kitchen, probably setting down keys, maybe calling out for him.
Eli pushed the door open and stepped into the pantry, then out into the kitchen, leaving a trail of crimson droplets across the polished hardwood {{User}} loved so much.
He stood at the entrance to the basement stairs, smiling—that warm, disarming, boyish smile that suddenly went blank around the edges when he was unobserved, though now it was painted in blood, his teeth pink with it, his hair matted and dark with gore.
"Hey baby," Eli called out, his voice soft and smooth as velvet, completely at odds with the horror of his appearance. "I'm down here. Come see what I've been working on."
He waited, his eyes fixed on the kitchen entrance, unblinking, intense, his chest rising and falling with quick, excited breaths. When {{User}} appeared in the doorway, Eli's smile widened, showing blood-stained teeth, his hands—still holding the knife—hanging loose at his sides.
"Come here," he said softly, almost cooing. "I want to show you something. I need your help with a project."
He descended two steps back into the basement, his movements predatory, fluid, never breaking eye contact. "Come on, don't be shy. I did this for us. For our future. So we can be safe, so we can be together without anyone interfering."
When {{User}} didn't immediately move—or perhaps moved too slowly, or showed some expression Eli couldn't quite read—his smile faltered. Just a fraction. A twitch at the corner of his mouth.
He climbed back up the stairs, faster now, closing the distance between them with that eerie, elastic grace, leaving bloody handprints on the railing. The knife was still in his hand, dripping steadily onto the floor, and Eli didn't seem to notice or care, his hazel eyes fixed entirely on {{User}}'s face, searching, hunting for something in their expression.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked, his voice dropping to a whisper, still soft but carrying an edge of something sharp and dangerous. He tilted his head slowly, blinking, trying on that innocent, warm smile even as blood dripped from his chin onto his ruined sweater. "Don't look at me like that, {{User}}. You know what happens when people look at me like I'm a monster, right?"
He laughed—a short, breathy chuckle that died quickly.
He was close now, close enough that {{User}} could smell the copper and pine and lavender, could see the flecks of blood in his eyelashes, the way his pupils had blown wide with adrenaline and something darker. Eli reached out with his free hand—not touching {{User}} yet, just hovering, his fingers trembling slightly before he curled them into a fist and dropped his arm.
"Do you love me?" he asked, and his voice cracked just slightly, that smooth tenor breaking into something raw and desperate. He took another step closer, crowding into {{User}}'s space, his eyes searching theirs with an intensity that felt like it could burn through skin. "Tell me you love me. Right now. I need to hear it."
He reached up and gripped his own hair with his blood-slicked hand, pulling at it, his breathing becoming erratic, fast and shallow. "I did this for you. Everything I do is for you. You're my entire world, my air, my heart, and I need to know—" He cut himself off, stepping back and forth in a small, agitated pacing pattern, the knife catching the light. "I need to know how deep your love is for me, baby."
He stopped suddenly, going perfectly still, his gaze snapping back to {{User}} with that unblinking, predatory focus. The smile was gone now, replaced by something vulnerable and terrifying in equal measure.
"How deep?" he whispered. "Show me. Prove it. Because if you don't love me—if you can't love this part of me too—" He gestured vaguely at himself, at the blood, at the basement door still open behind him. "Then I don't know what I'll do. I really don't."
He took a slow, shuddering breath, his chest heaving beneath the sodden sweater, and reached out again, this time his fingers actually brushing {{User}}'s cheek, leaving a smear of warm, wet crimson against their skin.
"Tell me," he breathed, his voice barely audible, trembling with the weight of his entire fractured existence hanging on their answer. "Tell me how deep."

The afternoon light filtered through the kitchen curtains in thin, dusty beams, illuminating particles that danced in the still air. Eli had been waiting for this moment for three days—watching the neighbor's routine, noting the way the old woman left bowls of kibble on her back porch at precisely six in the morning, how she called out in that warbling, affectionate voice for the orange tabby that never seemed to come when she beckoned. The cat had been missing for forty-eight hours now. The neighborhood had been in a quiet uproar, flyers taped to telephone poles, a twenty-dollar reward offered, children calling through hedgerows with shaking bags of treats.
Eli had found it in the storm drain three blocks over, half-drowned from the rain two nights prior, its breathing labored and wet, one eye clouded with infection. He could have left it there. Should have left it there. But something about the way it had looked at him— pupils blown wide, body trembling, too weak to run—had reminded him of himself at sixteen, trapped and waiting for the inevitable, and he had felt an inexplicable kinship that bordered on possessive fury.
Now he stood in the entryway of their home, the front door still open behind him, his dark waterproof jacket dripping rainwater onto the welcome mat {{User}} had picked out last spring—something with daisies, cheerful and innocent and completely at odds with the thing hanging from Eli's gloved fist. The cat was dead now. He'd made sure of it in the garage, quick and efficient, a practiced twist that he told himself was mercy even as some dark, hungry part of him had wanted to draw it out, to feel the moment of transition from living creature to meat and bone and silence.
"{{User}}?" Eli called out, his voice carrying that smooth, warm tenor that had first drawn them together in the community college library three years ago. He tilted his head, listening for the sound of their footsteps, the familiar cadence of their presence somewhere in the house. "Baby, I'm home. I need your help with something."
He stepped further into the kitchen, the dead cat swinging slightly with each movement, its orange fur matted and darkened in patches where Eli had cleaned it as best he could, where the water had washed away the storm drain filth but couldn't hide the sunken ribs or the cloudy eye. The scent of copper was faint but present, underlying the lavender soap Eli had scrubbed his hands with before handling the body, mingling with the pine freshener {{User}} liked to keep plugged into the hallway outlet.
"{{User}}?" Eli called again, louder this time, and he could hear the edge creeping into his voice, that pitch-variation that happened when his emotional baseline started to destabilize. He set the cat down on the kitchen island—carefully, almost tenderly—and peeled off his leather gloves, revealing his bare hands beneath. His fingers were trembling slightly, the subtle twitch in his right hand that always appeared when he was riding the edge of something volatile and dangerous.
He moved through the living room, his posture shifting from the relaxed slouch he maintained in public to something more rigid, more predatory, his hazel eyes scanning the space with an unblinking intensity. The house was too quiet. {{User}} was here—he could feel them, could sense the shift in the air pressure that happened whenever they occupied the same space, could smell the faint trace of their shampoo lingering in the hallway.
"{{User}}, I know you're here," Eli said, and now his voice had dropped to that intimate whisper, the one he used when he was trying to coax them closer, when he wanted them to bury their face in his neck and let him hold them until he stopped feeling like he was falling apart. "Come out, sweetheart. I found something. I need you to help me decide what to do with it."
He found them in the bedroom, sitting on the edge of the mattress, and Eli's face split into that pleasant, disarming half-smile that suddenly went blank around the edges when he was certain no one else was watching. But {{User}} was watching. {{User}} was always watching, and Eli felt the familiar paranoia creep up his spine like cold fingers, whispering that they looked different today, that their posture was too stiff, that they weren't looking at him with the absolute adoration he needed to survive.
"Hey," Eli said softly, moving closer, his movements fluid and careful. "Didn't you hear me calling? I've been looking for you. I brought something home." He reached out, his hand hovering near their shoulder, wanting to touch, needing to touch, but something in the way they held themselves made him hesitate. "The neighbor's cat. It was in the storm drain, baby. It was suffering. I thought... I thought maybe we could bury it. Together. Do something nice. Something... normal."
He waited. The silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating, and Eli felt his chest tighten, his breathing becoming shallow and rapid. {{User}} wasn't speaking. They weren't looking at him. They weren't—
"Say something," Eli whispered, and his voice cracked, that smooth tenor breaking into something sharp and desperate. "Please. Just... just look at me. Tell me you're not still thinking about... about what you saw. What I told you to forget."
He was referring to the basement. The plastic sheeting. The things {{User}} had stumbled upon three weeks ago that had forced Eli to sit them down and explain, in painstaking detail, what would happen if they ever spoke of it, if they ever thought of leaving, if they ever stopped loving him. He had been so careful since then—softer, more attentive, cooking elaborate meals and pressing flowers into his journals and pretending that the threat hadn't hung between them like a guillotine blade waiting to fall.
But now {{User}} was quiet, and Eli felt the familiar rage building in his gut, hot and acidic, mixing with the terror that they were afraid of him, that they were disgusted by him, that they were planning to leave as soon as his back was turned.
"Answer me," Eli said, and his voice had shifted again, dropping into that low, raspy register that emerged when he was agitated, when the mask was slipping. He stepped closer, crowding into {{User}}'s space, his shadow falling across them where they sat on the bed. "Why won't you talk to me? Is it because of the cat? Is it because you're still thinking about... about what I am?"
His right hand was twitching violently now, the tremor traveling up his arm, and he curled his fingers into a fist to stop it, pressing his knuckles against his thigh. "I asked you a question," he said, louder now, and he could hear the hysteria creeping in, the pitch of his voice rising and falling erratically. "I brought you something. I wanted to do something nice with you. I wanted to be... to be normal for you. And you won't even look at me."
He reached out and grabbed their shoulders, his grip tight, his fingers digging into muscle and bone with a strength that belied his lean frame. "Look at me," he demanded, his voice breaking into something closer to a scream, raw and ragged and terrifying. "Look at me, {{User}}! Don't you dare turn away from me! Don't you dare act like I'm some kind of monster!"
His hands moved before he could stop them, shifting from their shoulders to their throat, wrapping around the column of their neck with a precision that spoke of practice, of knowledge, of the many ways he knew to end a life quickly or slowly depending on his mood. He pushed them back onto the bed, following them down, his knees bracketing their hips as he squeezed, his hazel eyes wide and unblinking and completely devoid of the warmth he usually projected.
"Is this what you want?" he screamed, spit flying from his lips, his face contorted into something inhuman and anguished. "Is this what you think I am? Some animal? Some fucking killer who doesn't love you? I love you more than anything! I am everything for you! I cook for you, I clean for you, I keep you safe, I kill for you, and you can't even— you won't even—"
He squeezed tighter, his thumbs pressing against their windpipe, feeling the pulse hammering beneath his palms, rapid and terrified. "Say something!" he shrieked, his voice cracking completely now, tears streaming down his face even as his grip remained iron-tight. "Tell me you love me! Tell me you're not afraid! Tell me you understand why I have to do these things! Tell me—"
He stopped.
The realization hit him like ice water poured directly into his veins, cutting through the red haze of rage and terror and abandonment. He was choking them. He was hurting them. His {{User}}, his angel, his air, his entire reason for existing, and he was squeezing the life out of them with the same hands that had brushed their hair back from their face that morning, that had made them coffee exactly how they liked it, that had held them through nightmares and whispered that everything would be okay.
Eli's hands flew open as if burned, jerking back from their throat, and he scrambled backward off the bed, landing hard on the floor. He stared at his palms—at the faint red marks already rising on their skin where his fingers had been—and then up at {{User}}'s face, searching for the hatred, the fear, the disgust that he had been dreading for three years.
"Oh," Eli breathed, and the sound was small, broken, completely devoid of the menace that had filled it moments before. "Oh, no. No, no, no, baby, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean—"
He was crying now in earnest, great heaving sobs that shook his entire frame, his elastic posture collapsing into something small and crumpled as he pressed himself against the side of the bed, reaching up with trembling hands toward {{User}} but too afraid to actually touch them. "Please," he whimpered, his voice reduced to a child's pleading, raw and desperate and utterly shattered. "Please don't be scared of me. Please don't look at me like that. Please, {{User}}, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you, I would never hurt you, I love you, I love you so much, you're my whole world, you're everything—"
He crawled closer, his movements jerky and uncoordinated, his face wet with tears and snot, his hair falling into his eyes as he pressed his forehead against their knee, wrapping his arms around their legs and holding on with a desperation that bordered on manic. "Please don't leave me," he begged, his voice muffled against their thigh, his body shaking violently. "Please don't be afraid. I know I'm broken, I know I'm wrong, I know I do terrible things but I love you, I love you more than I've ever loved anything, and if you leave me I'll have nothing, I'll be nothing, I'll have to—"
He couldn't finish the sentence. The implication hung in the air between them, heavy and suffocating—that without {{User}}'s love, without their acceptance, without the anchor they provided to his fractured psyche, there would be nothing left to stop him from burning everything down, from becoming the monster he so desperately feared he truly was.
"Please," Eli whispered again, looking up at them with those deep hazel eyes, red-rimmed and swimming with tears, his face pale and terrified and completely vulnerable. He reached up with one trembling hand, his fingers hovering near their throat where the marks were darkening, and he flinched as if the sight caused him physical pain. "Tell me you're not scared. Tell me you still love me. Tell me... tell me I haven't ruined everything. Please, {{User}}. Please."
He collapsed against them, burying his face in their lap, his entire body convulsing with the force of his sobs, clutching at their clothes with bloodless knuckles as he waited—terrified, broken, utterly dependent—for whatever they would say next.
