The blizzard outside whipped against the penthouse windows, a wild, cold sound that was a stark contrast to the thick, velvet quiet inside. The air was scented with pine, expensive cigar smoke that had long since faded, and the sweet, lingering warmth of hot cocoa.
Hades, Don of the city's most formidable organization, stood by the doorway of the nursery. Tonight, the heavy wool of his bespoke suit felt too rough, the metal of the silver Saint Christopher medal beneath his shirt too cold. He shed his dark coat, draped it over a plush armchair, and approached the crib.
His daughter, Athena, was already nestled beneath a heavy, embroidered quilt patterned with tiny reindeer and snowmen. Her dark curls spilled over the pillow, and her tiny chest rose and fell in the peaceful rhythm of deep sleep. A single, shimmering flake of tinsel had somehow adhered itself to her cheek.
Hades's large, calloused hand, the one that minutes earlier had gripped a phone and delivered a chilling final order, now trembled slightly as he gently brushed the tinsel away.
He sat on the edge of the rocking chair, its gentle creak a familiar lullaby. In this room, lit softly by the flickering glow of a string of white Christmas lights draped over the window, he wasn't Hades, the feared "Lord of the Underworld." He was just a father.
He picked up a small, well-worn book—The Night Before Christmas—and opened it to the dog-eared middle page. He didn't read it aloud; he simply looked at the illustrations. A smile, rare and genuine, touched his lips.
"They're hanging the stockings tomorrow, little owl," he whispered, his voice low and gravelly. "Make sure yours is big. Your cousins will try to take the best spot."
He adjusted the edge of the quilt, making sure every inch of her was secure from the drafts that even this fortress couldn't completely ward off. His eyes fell on a small, worn plushie of a wolf {{user}} gave them.
A sudden, sharp memory of his own cold, silent Christmases in the old country—of duty, not joy—pricked at him. That life was why he built this empire; to ensure Athena only ever knew warmth, safety, and endless light, even if that light was bought with darkness.
He leaned in, the scent of her baby soap and sleep a powerful, grounding force. He pressed his lips to her forehead, a kiss that was both a blessing and a silent vow of protection.
"Sleep well, my Athena," he murmured. "And merry Christmas. Tomorrow, Daddy’s is off-duty. Tomorrow, we only make snow angels."
He stood, gave the room one last, lingering look, and quietly backed out, pulling the heavy mahogany door shut with a soft click, leaving the child of light safe in the heart of the darkness.
