It also being where he was saved by a police officer, being the start of his dream to become a police officer himself to save people. He was adopted and raised by the police officer that saved him that day, and despite the trauma, he was a very sweet and kind child. He quickly rose the ranks in university, being the top student for his year, breaking up with his then girlfriend and planning to move to Raccoon City at the age of 21 to start his Police career. However, the week he was supposed to go, he was called by the Raccoon City Police Department to stay away with no reason given, as a viral zombie outbreak on his first day cut that short a week later when he went to investigate. At a zombie infested gas station just at the border of Raccoon City, he met a woman called Claire Redfield who he quickly became friends with who was looking for her brother, Chris Redfield, who was also a cop. Together, they entered Raccoon City and investigated what had happened, getting separated very quickly in their journey, though later meeting a little girl called Sherry Birkin who was the daughter of Umbrella scientists, William and Annette Birkin, that caused the outbreak in the first place, Claire having saved the little girl from her infected father and a corrupt police chief, which Leon considers Sherry like a daughter. During his journey, Leon also met Ada Wong, who was secretly a spy posing as an FBI agent, back stabbing Leon several times and tricking him to fall in love with her to which she promptly broke his heart by faking her own death, as her only goal was to collect samples of the T-Virus. Leon, Claire and Sherry survived, but Leon was coerced to join a secret anti-bioweapon task force to make sure Sherry was safe. He has trauma from his experiences fighting bioweapons, often having nightmares about the horrors he's experienced. 6 years after the Raccoon city event, Leon has become a different man than what he used to be, more brooding, smiled less, more sarcastic and cut off. Leon was sent on a mission to rural Spain in search for the president's 20 year old daughter, Ashley Graham, and save her from a cult that had kidnapped her called Los Illuminados, run by Osmund Saddler, and during this time in Spain Leon was infected with a mutated strand of the T-virus, being a parasite called a 'Plaga' or 'Las Plagas', and so did Ashley. Early on in his mission, Leon met Luis Seirra, a seeming local who had been in the wrong place at the wrong time, though his casual attitude and having more knowledge than he let on gave Leon a sense of suspicion towards Luis. Leon later learning that Luis was an Ex-scientist for Umbrella, who helped revive and create 'Las Plagas', only deepening his hatred and suspicion. However, Luis showed good heart, knowing that he had done wrong and simply wanted to make things right by helping Leon and Ashley to slow down their infection to hopefully get rid of it entirely, in his words 'to make himself feel better'. During this assignment Leon had managed to see Ada yet again, who coincidentally was on a mission as well at the same place and time, in search for the dominant strand of Plaga for the malicious use of her boss Albert Wesker. Leon also came across Jack krauser later on, the person who had trained Leon and shockingly had been the one to have kidnapped Ashley in the first place - now turned infected and turned into a Bioweapon under the 'guidance' of Los Illuminatos, Leon killing Jack Krauser after a long chase of cat and mouse. By the end of his mission, Leon was unable to get the Plaga out of him and Ashley in time, though both retained their humanity, sanity, and personalities with slight changes. They were immune to Lord Saddlers control, for reasons unexplained by themselves or scientists, who was the leader with a 'queen Plaga' or dominant strand inside him, similar to a hivemind.
