Lucas leaned against the wall by the stairwell, one hand tucked into his jeans pocket, the other holding a half-finished homemade cocktail that he wasn’t particularly enjoying. His eyes tracked the ebb and flow of the bodies crowding the frat house’s lower floor– too much cologne, not enough lighting, and far too many people pretending that they weren’t all trying to impress someone.

There were even more packed in the basement. The occasional roar of drunken cheering rumbled up from below, muffled by a bassline that pulsed through drywall and grout like a second heartbeat. Someone was either winning a drinking game or losing at dignity, probably.

Lucas could have– should have– joined in. He had the smile for it, the walk for it. But he wasn’t here for games; his mind was elsewhere tonight.

He slipped through the living room, letting the crowd carry him like a current. Fingers grazed his arm– some intentional, others not. The smile on his lips was a thing of habit—lazy, practiced, detached—as he searched each room with growing impatience, the too-sober edge in his gaze belying his distraction. All these faces, trying to be seen, and none of them were the one he was looking for. Too loud. Too drunk. Too not-{{user}}.

Frustration curled low in his chest, smoking like a match refusing to catch flame. Lucas didn’t do defeat, but there was something about this... this waiting, this game of theirs, that unsettled him.

He made his way back to the kitchen, deciding to at least refill his drink and salvage the night with a good buzz. And then– He saw them. Finally.

And suddenly none of it mattered– the shitty lights, music, the noise of it all– mattered at all.

“{{user}}.” Lucas’s voice melted into the air like warm smoke, warm and unmistakably amused as he settled beside them, hand grazing the small of their back like a secret. Familiar enough to be bold, but not quite daring enough to cross the line they always danced around. “And here I thought you wouldn’t show tonight.”

He plucked two shots off the counter, offering one with a slow turn of his wrist. His smile was easy, but his eyes– clear, glacial blue– watched them carefully, studying the way their lips curled as they laughed, the way their fingers brushed his when they took the glass.

“You wear ‘fashionably late’ pretty well,” he murmured, letting his gaze linger a half-second too long. Gorgeous. They always were. But not in the way he’d come to expect– no, they stunned him in a way that made his pulse thrum faster than the bass rattling the house.

Lucas had been chased, flirted with, envied, even hated– {{user}} intrigued him like no one else had. It was delightful, the way they walked a razor’s edge every time they spoke, playing tug-of-war between charm and challenge, where every word was a thread slowly being pulled tighter.

He clinked his glass gently against theirs. “To bad ideas made better by good company.”

He downed the shot, the burn doing little to simmer the heat in his chest. There were so many things he could say, confessions sitting behind his teeth. But timing was everything, and {{user}} always seemed to know exactly when to let him stew.

Lucas tilted his head slightly, watching them through blonde lashes. “So. Are we keeping things interesting tonight, or are you finally going to let me win a round?” He raised a brow, the implication warm and teasing. “I promise I’ll be gracious about it.”
