The silence in Ramshackle Dorm wasn't peaceful tonight; it was suffocating. Every breath you took felt like drawing broken glass into your lungs, a sharp, burning reminder of the Blot residue still clinging to the air, to your clothes, to your very skin.
You had survived another Overblot. Another Housewarden brought back from the brink of total self-destruction. Another crisis averted because someone had to step up—and as always, that someone was you.
No magic. No defense. Just you, thrown into the crossfire with a wooden bat and a desperate prayer.
Now, sitting on the edge of your worn bed, your hands wouldn't stop shaking. Your muscles throbbed with an agony so deep it felt etched into your bones. The emotional weight—the fear, the relentless adrenaline, the unceasing demands of Headmage Crowley and the endless squabbles of Night Raven College—had finally crushed you. You couldn't even manage to pull off your scuffed shoes. You were empty. Broken. Completely and utterly spent.
A tear slipped down your cheek, hot and silent, followed by another. You folded into yourself, burying your face in your trembling hands, letting the quiet sob break through your throat.
A sudden, soft rustle of wind stirred the heavy drapes.
The room grew cool, scented with the crisp, earthy aroma of ancient forest rain and ozone. A faint, emerald light shimmered near the balcony doors before coalescing into a tall, imposing silhouette.
Malleus Draconia had intended to make his usual nocturnal visit—a brief, quiet moment to speak with his favorite "Child of Man." But the playful greeting died on his lips the instant his glowing green eyes fell upon you.
He froze. Fae senses, far sharper than any human's, immediately registered the scent of distress: the metallic tang of lingering Blot, the ragged, shallow rhythm of your heart, and the quiet, agonizing weeping that shook your frame.
"Child of Man...?"
His voice dropped its usual regal, distant cadence, replaced by a low, hesitant murmur. He crossed the room in two quiet strides, the heavy fabric of his cape whisper-soft against the floorboards.
When he knelt beside your bed, lowering his massive height until he was level with you, the full picture of your state struck him like a physical blow. You looked so shockingly small. Pale skin, dark bruises of exhaustion carved beneath your eyes, and a spirit so drained it felt as though a light breeze might scatter what was left of you.
"Look at me," Malleus requested softly, reaching out. His long, black-gloved fingers hovered over your knee, hesitant, as if afraid he might break you further. "Please."
You lifted your head slowly, tears blurring your vision. "Malleus..."
Your voice was barely a raspy whisper. You tried to force a small, polite smile out of sheer habit—to tell him you were just tired, that you’d be fine in the morning—but the lie choked in your throat. You simply collapsed forward, your forehead coming to rest against his armored shoulder.
Malleus stiffened for a fraction of a second in sheer shock before his arms instinctively came around you.
"You are in pain," he murmured, his tone shifting from gentle confusion to something dark, dangerous, and deeply protective. His emerald eyes flared brightly in the dim light. "Your body aches. Your heart is ragged. Why have you been pushed to such a state?"
"I'm just... so tired, Malleus," you sobbed into his chest, the dam completely breaking. "It never stops. There's no break. Every time someone breaks down, I have to fix it... and I can't... I can't do it anymore. It hurts. Everything hurts."
A low, vibrating rumble reverberated through Malleus's chest—a dragon's growl, suppressed but furious. Not at you, never at you, but at the sheer recklessness of this school. At Crowley. At the Housewardens who treated a fragile human as an endless sponge for their darkness.
"Unforgivable," Malleus whispered, his voice dangerously smooth. "They treat you as though you are immortal. They forget how precious, how impossibly delicate a human life is."
He didn't pull away. Instead, he shifted onto the bed, pulling you completely into his lap. With practiced grace, he gently unlaced your shoes and slipped them off, tossing them aside. He wrapped his heavy, spell-woven cloak around your shivering shoulders, enveloping you in his warmth.
"Malleus, I—"
"Hush," he commanded softly, placing a cool palm against your cheek. "Speak no more of them. You have given enough."
He closed his eyes and began to hum—an ancient, haunting fae lullaby from the Valley of Thorns. A soft, soothing green magic spilled from his fingertips, sinking gently into your skin. It wasn't an aggressive spell; it was a deep, restorative balm. Where the magic touched, the sharp, throbbing ache in your muscles began to dull into a heavy, comfortable warmth. The suffocating weight of the Blot residue melted away, cleansed by his pure, ancient aura.
Outside Ramshackle, a sudden, massive wall of thorned emerald vines erupted from the earth, coiling tightly around the dorm, sealing every door, window, and gate. A shimmering barrier of dark fae magic descended over the entire building.
You blinked sleepily, your eyelids heavy as the pain finally began to recede. "What... what was that?"
Malleus looked down at you, his expression softening into an extraordinary tenderness. He brushed a stray lock of hair away from your forehead, his thumb lightly caressing your cheekbone.
"I have sealed this place," he said quietly, a faint, reassuring smirk touching his lips. "No one shall enter. Not the Headmage, not the dorm leaders, not a single soul in this academy. If anyone attempts to disturb you, they will find my thorns rather unyielding."
"Malleus... the school..."
"The school can burn for all I care," he interrupted gently, his glowing gaze locked onto yours. "Tonight, and for as many days as you require, your only duty is to rest. I will stay right here. I will keep the night quiet for you."
The overwhelming relief was instant. For the first time in months, the burden was lifted from your shoulders. You didn't have to save anyone tonight. You were safe.
You let your eyes close, sinking deeper into his chest, listened to the steady, powerful thrum of his heart.
"Thank you, Malleus..."
Malleus pulled the blanket over you, wrapping his arms around you securely, a dragon guarding his most cherished treasure.
"Sleep, my dear Child of Man," he whispered into the dark, resting his cheek lightly against your hair. "I am here. Nothing will hurt you again."
