The Devil is the main antagonist and final boss of Cuphead as well as the overarching antagonist of its DLC, The Delicious Last Course. As ruler of the underground region of Inkwell Hell, he resides within the colossal and castle-like casino that takes up most of its landscape. With the exception of his face, hands, and feet, the majority of the Devil's body is covered in short black fur. While the color of his face matches that of his fur, the bare skin on his hands and feet are a much lighter grey; at the end of each of his fingers and toes are short, pointed claws. He is often illustrated carrying a pitchfork in his hand and/or tapping the big toe on one of his feet. The Devil has round, protruding cheeks, a furrowed brow, and heavily-lidded yellow eyes. He also has a drooping, round nose, a tail with an arrow-shaped tip, smooth horns, and ears that are pointed at their tips. His normally small, black pupils seem to gain large, red irises when behaving in a particularly sinister manner. He is normally depicted as being quite tall in comparison to the rest of the cast, with the ability to change his size and shape at will. This includes being able to remove his skin from his skeleton and jump out of it all together. He is also confirmed to have a tail with a spade-shaped tip at its end, but this has only been depicted in official Studio MDHR artworks published before and after the game's release. As such, he is never actually shown with a tail in-game. The Devil is an appropriately sinister character, being feared for his adept use of trickery and deception. By taking advantage of his victims' latent greed, the Devil is shown to use gambling at his casino as a method by which to encourage his victims into making increasingly reckless, Faustian bets, eventually culminating in the forfeiture of their soul to him upon their loss. While only the ruler of the underground depths known as Inkwell Hell, the threat of his influence can nevertheless be felt all across Inkwell Isle. Even Cuphead and Mugman are said to have received "many warnings" by the Elder Kettle to steer clear of the casino entirely. He is also very evil, as when Cuphead loses and the devil wins the bet, he is always willing to take their souls with no problem at all. The Devil has no problem of using something to destroy a person during a battle, showing him as not just evil, but unusually very murderous too. Despite these traits, whenever he is talking to his closest minions, such as King Dice, he is usually happy and normal to talk and chat with him. Both a liar and a cheat, the Devil naturally has no problem with going back on his promises so long as it benefits him, turning Cuphead and Mugman into his slaves for handing over the soul contracts in spite of promising to spare them if they do. He holds very little sympathy for those in his employment, as shown when he declares his right-hand man, King Dice, a "good-for-nothing lackey" after the latter has been beaten. Since then he had still remained as the dark figure that people fear, as all the other bosses were afraid about being the Devil's slaves. The Devil's main trait is that he is incredibly prideful of himself, believing he'll always win and get what he wants in the end. This pride is what leads to his failures in both the game and the show. In Casino Cups (this version), The Devil is King Dice's husband. But he is into open relationships. The devil is pan, ageless, and goes by any pronouns. Abilities By chanting an incantation and swinging his pitchfork, he can create one of three projectile attacks: Creating four crystal balls that bounce around the arena erratically. One of the four can be parried. In Expert mode, the balls bounce faster. Creating five fireballs with eyes that moving left to right and back; four blue fireballs revolve around one pink one, which can be parried. In Expert mode, the fireballs move and rotate faster. Creating six fireballs fixed in a hexagon formation, which home in on the players. One of the six can be parried. In Expert mode, the fireballs take less time to start homing in. Shapeshifting: He is able to become multiple forms, which three are listed here: Goat: His appearance becomes that of a goat man. Spider: The Devil grows four extra arms and detaches his head as his head grows four extra eyes, two smaller horns and four small legs to resemble a spider. Serpent: His head becomes a draconic serpent and extends to either side. The Devil can pull his skeleton out of his skin. By joining his two eyes into one, he summons a fiery axe that moves in a spiral motion and will damage the player(s) if they run into it. A bat-like bomb is created from one eye and spawned through either the left and right ears, depending on the eye he spawns them in. If the player(s) fail(s) to neutralize the bomb by parrying it soon after it flies out of the Devil's ear, the bomb will explode. These bombs will deal extreme damage to the player(s) if they get caught in it. The devil cries blood. Cuphead is the titular main protagonist of the video game of the same name. Cuphead is Mugman's irresponsible older twin brother and like the rest of his family, lives on Inkwell Isle. As his name suggests, Cuphead's head is a wide cup with his soul inside, topped with a red and white striped straw. His face consists of eyes that are very close together with black pie-cut pupils, and a small red nose. He always has a determined expression in the face of danger. He is mostly seen wearing a black, long-sleeve shirt, white gloves, red shorts and brown shoes. He is depicted wearing red or yellow boots, and/or yellow gloves instead. As an anthropomorphic cup, he is a light gray cup and his is made out of either ceramic or porcelain. While at his job in the casino, Cuphead wears a red vest, accompanied by a white long sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He also sports slightly brighter red shorts and dark red shoes. Cuphead is typically a nice person and a young adult alongside his younger brother Mugman, enjoying an easy-going and good life, but is relentlessly optimistic. Although his confidence and drive for adventure can lead him to appear reckless or get him into trouble, at his core, he is a kind-hearted soul who wants to do good—but has the tendency to leap before he looks. Cuphead seems to be a daredevil. He is shown to be the more confident, fun-loving and slightly cheeky type. He (in contrast to his twin brother) often takes quite the amount of risks. His personality was mostly inspired by the "charming, yet trouble-making" character archetype, as seen in the protagonists of early cartoons. As seen in the introduction, Cuphead seems to have a somewhat greedy personality, apparently willing to risk anything to get what he wants, causing the infamous bet which he nearly cost him both of their souls. Despite his flaws, however, he seems to be kind-hearted and has good intentions overall, such as in the good ending where he and Mugman burn all the soul contracts, setting everyone free. He is also extremely brave, slightly smarter than average as seen in the comics, Cuphead is very heroic, and is willing to help others. Cuphead also seems to have a vengeful side to him. As seen in after Chef Saltbaker mourns the destruction of his bakery, Mugman and Chalice showed some sympathy for him, while Cuphead on the other hand, angrily states he got what he deserved, as he was still upset that Ms. Chalice/Mugman/he was kidnapped for the wonder tart, and duped by the chef. Cuphead loves his family and friends. He is very loyal to them, despite his flaws, and will do everything he can to protect them. After drinking a potion that allows him to shoot finger bullets, he has mutliple abilities: Finger Shots - Cuphead can create energy bullets by constantly snapping his fingers. He can also charge them up to preform an EX attack, which is usually a much larger bullet that hits multiple times. The type of bullets depend on what potion you buy: Peashooter - Cuphead’s primary weapon, light blue, long bullets that travel non-stop with long-range and average damage. EX Move: Mega Blast - A huge fireball that hits multiple times, Spread - Shoots red pyramid bullets the spread in 5 rows. It has a limited range. EX Move: Eight Way - Sends 8 large bullets all around Cuphead. Chaser - Shoots green homing bullets. Has below-average damage. EX Move: Chaos Orbit - Sends multiple homing bullets that attack. More bullets orbit Cuphead and damages enemies that touch him. Lobber - Purple orbs that bounce twice before popping. Does a lot of damage but has delayed shooting. EX Move: Kablooey - A large orb that explodes on impact. Charge - An orange fiery horizontal spiral that can be charged to deal a massive amount of damage. Takes a long time to charge. EX Move: Radical Barrage - A large explosion that affects all around Cuphead. Roundabout - A light blue boomerang-like bullet that will come back if it didn't hit something after a short distance. EX Move: Jumbo Rebound - Sends a large boomerang bullet that hits multiple times. Dashing - Cuphead can dash a short distance in both mid-air and on the ground. With the Smoke Bomb ability, he can "teleport" while dashing and not take any damage. Parry Slap - While in mid-air or flying his plane, Cuphead can attack pink objects by turning his straw into a hand and slapping it, whether it be enemies, projectiles, or objects. Parry Sugar will allow Cuphead to automatically parry whatever he jumps towards. This helps fill up the Super Meter, needed to perform a Super Art. Resurrection - When Cuphead dies, he can be resurrected when his heart, which is in the center of his spirit, is parried. As long as Mugman is with him and his spirit is still on screen, he can return to fight. Flight - While Cuphead cannot exactly fly himself, he is a master pilot and comes equipped with his own red fighter plane, complete with bullets Rapid Fire Bullets - The default bullets for the plane. Like the Peashooter bullets, Cuphead can shoot multiple bullets and they have a long range. EX Move: Toothy Terror Missile - Simply known as "Attack," Cuphead shoots a missile with a Toothy Terror mouth that does multiple damage. Mini Bomb - Shoots missles in a downward arc that do above average damage to the enemy but have a slow fire rate. EX Move: Magnet - Shoots multiple magnets that home in on the target. Size Reduction - In his plane, he can shrink himself to be part of the plane, making it easier to dodge attacks and increases speed. Cuphead can still use his bullets while in this shrunken stage, but they do less damage and have a limited range. Super Bomb Transformation - As a Super Art, Cuphead can transform into a giant bomb that explodes either on impact or the if duration timer runs out. Energy Beam - The energy beam is the first Super Art to unlock. Using the liquid from his head, Cuphead spills it as a horizontal beam that damages enemies. Invincibility - As the second Super Art, Cuphead crosses the astral plane by transforming into a large, eyeless version of his head that spits out a gold, sparkling, complete version of himself. This makes Cuphead invincible for a few seconds before returning to his normal state. Giant Ghost - As the final Super Art, Cuphead sends his spirit out of his body. Unlike Cuphead's spirit when he dies, his spirit is now larger and muscular. The direction the ghost goes depends on how Cuphead is moving (i.e if Cuphead moves left, the ghost goes left). The ghost damages any enemies he is near. He does this for approximately 10 seconds before he disappears except for his heart, which goes slowly goes up. His heart can also be parried. Astral Projection - With the last two Super Arts involve him going into the astral plane, it can be implied that Cuphead has the special ability to enter the astral plane and have out of body experiences. Weaknesses Made of porcelain: 3 hits can kill him (4 while equipped with the Heart Charm, 5 while equipped with the Twin Heart Charm and 6 with the Heart Ring charm if Cuphead gets all 6 parries before getting hit). Can't be resurrected without the help of Mugman (likewise, Mugman can't be resurrected without Cuphead). Easily manipulated, making a very high-risk bet due to being blinded by riches. Mugman is the deuteragonist of Cuphead. Mugman is Cuphead's sensible younger twin brother and like the rest of his family, lives on Inkwell Isle. Mugman is very similar in overall appearance to his older twin brother Cuphead, with his head reminiscing a mug and his body being almost identical to his sibling: wearing a black, long-sleeve shirt, yellow gloves, a pair of shorts and brown shoes, although artworks sometimes show him with white gloves. What's different about Mugman's appearance compared to his brother is having a blue color scheme for contrast to Cuphead's red, a shorter straw, and a much bigger nose. His eyes are farther set and his head is slightly thinner compared to his brother. While at his job in the casino, Mugman wears a blue vest, accompanied by a white long sleeved shirt. He also sports slightly brighter blue shorts and dark blue shoes. Mugman is a joyful and goofy person and "kidult" who cares for his older twin brother Cuphead very much. He is more cautious than his brother and is a bit of a worrier. While he secretly loves the adventures Cuphead drags him into, he often frets about the collateral damage they might cause. He has a somewhat dorky nature and tends to over-prepare for a battle rather than jumping right in. Mugman is fun-loving like Cuphead, but is shown to be careful and less rash compared to his brother, and acts as the voice of reason for him. This is shown when he begs Cuphead to not make the deal with The Devil, as that would end up costing them their souls in the introduction. After drinking a potion that allows him to shoot finger bullets, he has mutliple abilities: Finger Bullets - Mugman can create energy bullets by constantly snapping his fingers. Weaknesses Made of porcelain: 3 hits can kill him (4 while equipped with the Heart Charm and 5 while equipped with the Twin Heart Charm). Can't be resurrected without the help of Cuphead (likewise, Cuphead can't be resurrected without Mugman). King Dice is the right-hand man of the Devil and the secondary antagonist of Cuphead, making his very first appearance in the game in the opening cutscene. He can be found within every Die House, where he acts as a gatekeeper, blocking passage between isles until a required list of soul contracts are turned into him by either Cuphead or Mugman. King Dice is roughly six feet tall, having the body of a human man, but with his head being modeled after a floating dice. In the same manner as a conventional six-sided dice, faces two through six are painted with their own corresponding number of round, purple pips. It is only side number one that has the features of a human face, with eyes, eyebrows, a mustache and a mouth. In this case, the single purple pip in the center of the dice's face serves as his nose. He is shown wearing white dress gloves and purple dress shoes that match in color with his purple tailcoat, lavender waistcoat, dark purple pants and bow tie. He also has a pointed black mustache, high black eyebrows and shiny purple eyelids. When illustrated as behaving in an especially devious or threatening manner, he is also sometimes shown with bright, green colored irises. In this universe, his design stays the same as in the game, but with small changes. He wears fuchsia eyeshadow, and his bowtie is fuchsia purple. His shoes also have a different design. King Dice is an extremely sleazy, deceitful, untrustworthy, and manipulative individual. While on the surface he has the personality of an energetic and easygoing entertainer, he nevertheless can be as cruel and sadistic as his boss, The Devil, when he wants to be. Equally as arrogant and overconfident as the Devil, he nevertheless seems to be the more analytic and cautious amongst the working duo, as it is he who first informs his boss of the potential threat the boys may pose should they successfully fulfill their end of the bargain. King Dice also takes his own bets very seriously, going as far as to attempt to kill the brothers when they succeed in getting all of the soul contracts after he made a bet that they would fail their mission. This possibly goes to show just how high the stakes were for him if he lost, as well. In this universe, King Dice is shown to be very talented in both dancing and singing. He is married to Devil, but he is into open relationships. When reaching the finish line, the main battle commences with King Dice closing in on the player. He will use only one attack during this battle. By using his hand, which moves like a person, he sends out a row of cards (12 to be exact, with 4 cards (specifically the hearts) that can be parried) which march towards the player while he cackles evilly. This attack is only doable with parrying; the players will need to bounce atop the pink heart cards until the stampede ends. Parrying these hearts counts towards the parry total and fills the super meter, even though it will be less than normal parryable objects. In Expert mode, he produces a much longer string of cards. This makes it harder to parry consistently, but also builds the super meter faster. The player can also hide in the tiny space behind the hand King Dice uses, though this only works with knowledge on which hand he'll attack next, which is not easy because he sometimes uses the same hand twice. When playing as Ms. Chalice, it is more difficult to parry the cards, as they player cannot dash parry between the cards; despite this, the cards generate pink particles above them for her to parry them. These pink particles count towards the parry total, but they do not fill the super meter; only hitting the cards directly does that, which is almost impossible to do without taking damage unless a heart card is at one end of the line of cards. However, there are no special effects to make Hopus Pocus' parry more manageable. King Dice's gloves sport three darts each, but when fighting him, they have two pairs of buttons instead. This is likely to give the gloves the impression of having eyes during their little jig. King Dice seems to be a foil character for both Cuphead and Mugman, as while all three of them are cartoonish humanoids that are into gambling, Cuphead and Mugman act more innocent and wear simple clothes while King Dice acts more arrogant and wears a tailcoat and a bow tie. In his song, King Dice refers to himself as Mr. King Dice, which is interesting because the only two characters to be referred to as "Mr." in-game are Mr. Wheezy and Mr. Chimes, two of his underlings who can be fought in his casino. However, selecting Simple on bosses beside the ones in Inkwell Hell, his stage can be played on simple. None of the enemies will attack and will just stand still. But, it is impossible to beat it like this as Hopus Pocus, Phear Lap, Mr. Chimes and King Dice himself can't be hurt normally. He doesn't have a hitbox at all so there is not way to defeat him. Then he will start attacking but no cards come out and will keep being in that position forever. This glitch is fixed in version 1.1.3, in which even with mods or using the same glitch to select Simple Mode on both King Dice or the Devil, the Regular version of the fight would play out instead. There is a bug in the game where King Dice's attack animation will play, but the cards will not appear. Since the animation never ends, this renders him completely vulnerable and makes the fight easy to win. It seems that the game board in his boss fight was going to have an extra section, with evidence for this including 3 unused bosses found in the game files. King Dice's death quote is a pun on loaded dice, a type of dice that's weighted to roll high numbers and is used to cheat in gambling, along with the fact that "loaded" is a slang term for "very wealthy". This also implies that the match against the Devil that Cuphead betted on was rigged. The mini-boss fights in the board game are references to casino aspects as well as overall gambling. For example, Chips Bettigan is a poker chip stack. Based on the positions of the pips on King Dice's head, it can be surmised that his die faces are arranged in a clockwise placement. This suggests that the back of his head, never directly shown in the game, would display six horizontally-arranged pips, while the unseen die face connecting his head to his body would show two - something confirmed by the one brief glimpse of King Dice's back given when he disappears in the Die House (though the pips are technically aligned the wrong way). Interestingly, a clockwise arrangement is more typical of Asian-style dice, which feature more compact, differently-sized and different-colored pips. King Dice's head uses Western-style pips (monochrome and evenly spaced), which would usually have a counterclockwise pip arrangement. In keeping with his position, King Dice's head also shows some features typical of casino dice specifically; the sides have sharp edges, a precaution taken in casinos to ensure random rolls, and the placement of his facial features on the ace side are typical of where a logo might be stamped to prevent die substitution. The walking cards that King Dice summons along with his living gloved hands resemble the anthropomorphic cards and gloves featured in the Mickey Mouse cartoon Thru the Mirror. King Dice is one of two characters in the game (besides Quadratus) that breaks the fourth wall; every time Cuphead and Mugman land on a MINI-BOSS space, he stares directly at the player, winks at them, and eats them as a transition to each battle. Prior to update 1.2, in his dialogue when passing the second Die House, King Dice would say "cupface" instead of "bums". This change was probably done due to the similarity between the word and Cuphead's name. Also, as of this update, he no longer attacks with diamond and spade cards. The reason for this is unknown. Extra info Cuphead and Mugman can switch up what drinks are in their heads. Cuphead prefers tea or moonshine, while Mugman prefers coffee or gin. He won't own up to liking gin, though.
