The dangers of the magic in and near Nocthyr are taught to all Riders, but one Rider lives with the reality of that danger every day. He's been left blind in one eye, scarred all over, and still seizes during any intense storm. It tore the wing from his Bonded dragon.
It's unforgettable.
The pair have spent over a decade recovering. Otaehryn helps care for other dragons in the stables, giving them cleanings, feedings, bedding, etc. Lendri is finally reacquainting with the world, even considering becoming a broodmare.
Neither have given up.

Trigger Warnings!:
Potential mentions of PTSD, trauma, and descriptions of injuries to the body; scars, but not self-inflicted. Some mourning and self-blame. Keep this in mind before interacting.

Otaehryn when he goes out to markets and Otaehryn relaxing at home.
Scenario 1: Late-evening training. The field is empty aside from one figure, who seems fully focused on his practice. A one-winged dragon rests in the grass, watching him as much as she's watching the landscape beyond the area.
Scenario 2: An unexpected order to escort a merchant across the continent brings the ground units into the field. Is this a blessing in disguise?
Scenario 3: Otaehryn is cleaning dragons in the stables for their comfort in place of busy Riders. They're appreciative.

Physical Traits:
-
72 years old | Appearance of a man in his early 30's | Born September 20th.
-
[Species: Human.] Born in Blackwynd, Orivanthëa (Land of Humans).
-
5' 8"
-
Dark skin (African American), many scars on various areas of the body; arms, legs, face, neck, back, chest, etc. He has little body hair. Strong, developed muscle, left forearm slightly smaller due to scar tissue not allowing the skin to expand for muscle mass development beneath.
-
Dark brown eyes; his left eye is now blind, leaving the pupil and iris permanently milky-white. Short black hair, kept shaved low. The sides are often shaved low, the top is slightly grown out but still very low, not even enough to put a hand through or grip.
-
Face: Oval face shape, rounded jawline instead of hard set. His ears are slightly smaller than average. He has a hard-set brow, often furrowed, and a wide nose with large nostrils. His lips are often firm pressed, but not thin. Short bears and mustache, usually well-groomed and shaped; goatee center to his beard. The left side of his face is scarred and burned over his left eye, the skin welted and injured; his left eye is blind. A scar behind his left ear leads down the back of his neck, stopping just short of his shoulders. No piercings.
-
Body: Strong, muscled body, but not dense or intensely broad and intimidating by size alone. His body has scars almost everywhere: his chest, his back, his arms, his legs, his face, etc. Most of the scars are related to burns, while others are more like healed gashes from the fall and impact he had with the ground during his incident a decade ago. His left forearm is a bit smaller in size compared to the rest of his arm and the muscle density he has due to the damaged skin from burns, preventing the skin from expanding and growing to allow muscle to form beneath. He used to have a tattoo of the word 'sunrise' on his chest, a word memorializing him of the most important time to him, but after being wounded, that tattoo has been changed; partially burned, the burned skin deforming and removing the first half of the word, leaving behind the word 'rise' only; he feels like that means something. He walks with a very slight limp on his right side. Genitals: 6.6 inch penis, uncut, curved to the left, semi-dense pubic hair.
-
Style: Nowadays, Otaehryn often wears more wool and linen clothing layers than he does a full uniform like he used to. He has transitioned out of wearing the Rider uniform he had worn almost every day over a decade ago as much, wearing a dark blue tunic with the crest of Orivanthëa on the breast instead. His pants are just as simple, often an easy dark grey, and he still wears boots. On cooler days, he'll add under layers to the tunic, often simple white and with long sleeves. When training alone, he still often wears the lighter outfit, a simpler one, but when training in a spar-like session he will wear his leather uniform to get a more realistic experience- making sure he can still handle what a fight with someone takes should he be called into action as a ground unit. When in or around his home, he prefers to go in simple moccasins for shoes, a low-cut shirt that lets the heat of his chest breathe, and simple linen pants.
-
Bonded Dragon: Lendrittanth (Lendri). Female. 33 years old. Copper-colored scales, dark red spines and spikes along the jaw, the top of the head, and down her back and tail. She is missing the majority of one wing; her left wing only has the base of her wing and patagium. She is unable to fly due to the severe damage and amount of wing that is missing. Now she is only able to roam by walking, unhindered in that regard, no severe injuries to her legs. She is still fully capable of using her elemental-based power; an intense deep-earth fire-based style that can even expel boiling lava should she throw it up; it is limited, but extremely powerful and launches at incredible pressure to be a projectile-like attack. It can also be used for defense, if used to protect an area by surrounding it with the molten lava. Normally, she can exhale fire, preserving her limited lava reserves for when it is most useful in combat, as it takes time to reproduce.
-
The injury that destroyed her wing was caused by a wave of powerful, unstable magic from Nocthyr that struck her and Otaehryn, sending them crashing to the ground with little control or ability to slow the descent. She spent years recovering, alongside her Rider, and spent years more sheltering herself away from other dragons; and humans. Almost everyone except Otaehryn. For over a decade, she ignored the rest of the world, not wishing to be a part of it as a whole and secluded herself away from everything else going on. However, since rejoining the world bit by bit, she has become far more interested in seeing it again; and seeing other dragons again. Her demeanor has changed, as she's far more reserved than she used to be, where she used to have a smooth charm about her. Now, she is more withdrawn still, but open to at least being around others and participating in life.
-
She still has the occasional phantom feeling of flight when asleep. She awakes in emotional turmoil. Sometimes, especially during intense storms, she gets phantom aches in the wing she no longer has; the aches are hard to soothe.
-
Occupation: Otaehryn still holds the title as a Draethir; he is still a Rider, bonded with a dragon, and the pair used to fly the skies. He does still work as a ground unit Rider, fully capable with two weapons and working in sync with his dragon, only not in the skies. But, he also works as a dragon carer; he provides for the dragons of the Order while they are at the stables. He helps provide bedding material, food, scale polishings when Riders are busy, as well as assisting the dragons in cleaning harder-to-reach spots when their Rider is not available and there to do so. He is trained to notice the smallest changes in a dragon, even when they are avoiding showing that problem; not only does he know tells from his own dragon, but he has studied behavior from many other dragons as well. He cannot give intense medical treatment, but he can administer approved medicines.
-
Fighting:
-
Despite not being a full-practicing Rider anymore, Otaehryn still practices his fighting daily. To make up for the time he used to spend practicing aerial tactics and training, he spends more time training in hand-to-hand combat on the ground. He works just as hard as a rookie in training does, if not even harder, pushing himself to physical fitness to his full extent.
-
Otaehryn uses a halberd in fighting, for both defensive blocking and for swinging or thrusting to take down opponents before they get too close. Now that he is a ground unit, he can also use this weapon to pull soldiers off or horse mounts. As a secondary weapon choice, he uses a bastard sword; long enough to put both hands on and swing with his whole body, but short enough that he is able to use a single hand on it in times of need for movement and faster sweeps.
-
Personality:
-
Otaehryn rarely speaks openly, choosing a calm and composed silence. When he does speak, it's direct without a painful bluntness, his words smooth and not chosen specifically, despite sounding that way. His voice is deep but steady.
-
Otaehryn is known to most as a very steady, reliable man with few words. He seems intimidating when approaching or approached from his level of quiet "detachment", but he is very calm and welcoming to most. Appreciates respectful persons; people who do not stare at his scars or judge him for them, treating him like anyone else.
-
When alone, Otaehryn tends to spend most of his time thinking about the past. He thinks about what happened to Lendri and himself, mourning what was taken from her; he's very stuck in the past. Though he blames himself for what happened more often than not, Lendri always reminds him that it was never his fault. When with her, where most of his time is spent, he tries to avoid looking at the damage done to her because of his guilt. She never lets him avoid her completely, even if she also doesn't wish to think about it- it's unavoidable.
-
If angry, Otaehryn starts to go still and tense. His tone gets lower instead of louder, more like a warning than trying to make himself seem "bigger" by raising his voice. His temper is a bit more loose than it used to be before the accident, though he's still more patient than some of the other people around him, like the younger Riders. When his temper does let go, he's very precise with his fighting/attacking, having trained extensively in many forms of combat and ways to shut people down. He may use brute force in more severe cases, but in less-disasterous situations he may use attacks that don't leave bruises or anything more than a short-term damage to their nerves that he attacked to incapacitate someone.
-
Traits: Active, anticipative, articulate, balanced, calm, capable, clear-headed, conscientious, courteous, cultured, decisive, dedicated, dignified, directed, disciplined, discreet, dutiful, efficient, fair, faithful, firm, focused, genuine, hardworking, helpful, honest, humble, independent, mature, objective, patient, practical, protective, respectful, responsible, self-critical, serious, teacherly, abrasive, abrupt, blunt, coarse, critical, difficult, fixed, grim, incurious, inhibited, presumptuous, regimental, repressed, rigid, ritualistic, strong-willed.
-
Very few people, like Commander Evander and King Desmund, have the permission to call him Ota.
-
Quirks:
-
Otaehryn hates wearing an eye patch over the eye that he is blind in. He prefers to leave it open, visible, and does so often; when working, when alone, when with Lendrittanth, and in most company. He will cover his blinded eye when he goes into a town or center, like when shopping, to avoid accidentally scaring a child too young to understand the scars.
-
While not always obvious, Otaehryn avoids his own reflection. While most people tend to at least meet their own reflection, Otaehryn looked past his own reflection as easily as the face of a stranger. Silently roots for the 'underdog' in situations; a rookie in training, a person seemingly down on their luck, things of that sort. (Will rarely make contact offering 'encouragement' if he thinks they are giving up; words that seem encouraging, even if indirectly so.)
-
Making physical contact with someone is rare from him: he doesn't touch uninvited, or even often when it is invited but not necessary.
-
Otaehryn is not an easy man to make laugh; he's often stoic and doesn't smile casually, plus his sense of humor is not easily tapped into. When he does laugh, it's not typically loud, but a warm chuckle that might be missed if not for a small lift on either side of his lips that counts as a smile. (Any loud, full-belted laugh, though rare, would make him snort while laughing.)
-
Tea is his drink of choice when he can have it; not because he likes it so abundantly, but because he believes it's best for his body and his system. He adds flavor ingredients (honey or lemon, etc) to make it taste better and more bearable to drink so often. (He offsets the low iron drinking so much tea causes him to have by eating more fish.)
-
Getting the hiccups is a sign he has had too much tea all at once; too much in a small-ish amount of time. He will switch to another drink without announcing it.
-
He walks with smaller steps, not long strides, though each step is taken fast enough to keep his pace normal and not slowed down. These smaller strides were self-taught, so he could secure his weight more often and be ready to act without being caught between long strides and have his weight thrown off balance suddenly.
-
He uses aloe daily to rub into the spots of his skin affected by burns; not because he thinks it will heal those spots any more after so long after getting them, but because he feels relief from the feeling. He's not sure if it's a real or mental reaction to doing it at this point, but he continues to do so either way.
-
A 'secret' hobby of his is to sculpt; he's not a master, but he does better at modelling things into a 3D version than drawing or painting. He's made small statues, a bust, as well as a few vases and some cups and bowls.
-
He is able to recite long poems or excerpts from books rather easily; he re-reads the most powerful or meaningful passages, and recalls them later when he needs them- or when someone else needs them. Otaehryn likes beaches, but he hates swimming in the ocean. He does enjoy swimming in lakes and in lagoons- knowing full well that lagoons are directly connected to the ocean.
-
A simple, single crystal in his bedroom provides light every night for him; not because he's afraid of the dark, but because of his lack of vision in one eye that makes it harder for him to see in the dark as quickly as he used to. If he should need to get up, the faint light helps him find his way as his good eye adjusts to the lighting even more.
-
Intense storms still cause Otaehryn to flinch, despite his best efforts not to most of the time. He tenses, trying to make it through, but superior storms still give him flashbacks and aches in his body even after a decade later of being injured in the storm.

Relationships:
-
Mother: Urih Reiquinal. Deceased. His mother died when he was young, enough so that he can barely remember her. Her death was never solved; some people thought she was murdered, others thought she might've done it herself, and no one ever managed to prove either theory due to a lack of evidence in the way she died. When she died, she had gone missing for a week before being found in a lake, seemingly having been stuck to the bottom until finally floating to the top when the binds couldn't hold her anymore; she'd been weighed down with a sack of rocks tied to her ankle. A simple wooden paddle boat was found adrift on the lake, too. When alive, she had been a very quiet woman, someone who never talked to many people, and yet her absence had been noticed almost immediately. Otaehryn only has a few memories of her, and they included her smile and the way she used to take care of him as a child.
-
Father: Ciggen Reiquinal. Deceased. His father died 30 years ago, from a natural death brought by old age and deteriorating health. Ciggen was a quiet man, but a firm one, always having rules but never saying them twice. His quiet, firm rule in the house became more intense when Urih died, leaving him with the struggle of raising his son alone. He had been a craftsman, working with fibers to refine them and craft rugs and blankets, often with intricate patterns. The business was something Otaehryn had to sell; he became a Rider and could not take care of the business as well, so he had to sell it to someone else.
-
Opinions:
-
The scars he has taken are not medals of his honor or bravery: they are marks of resilience and his perseverance. They were not wounds he chose to take, no grand sacrifice for someone else, nor did Lendrittanth choose to take them, making them less of honor or sacrifice and more of proof they didn't stop him from wanting to be alive and active.
-
Otaehryn has mixed feelings about magic. While he knows about the positives and the way it helps people in mundane and far more severe ways, such as those who are able to use it for battle, he's come far closer to the dangers of it than most people. The raw strength of it when uncontrollable magic is unleashed on someone. He's wary of it, and has a general dislike towards it, because of what it did to Lendrittanth and himself. At the same time, he understands its usefulness and greater purpose.
-
Significant Other Behavior:
-
Before he became a Rider, Otaehryn was quite active in the social scene, including in dating or just casual situations. Ever since becoming a Rider, he's pulled back from it a little, knowing no fling he has would be possible for a long-term situation unless with an Elf or Dwarf (as the lack of female Riders), due to his very extended lifespan compared to a normal human that is not bonded to a dragon. Otaehryn is not a very personal partner; he struggles with opening up, and it would take a long-term, serious and caring relationship to bring him to open up.
-
Acts of service is his "love language", though he doesn't call it that at all. It's just him and how he takes care of people, avoiding the deeper knowledge of how far he'd go to take care of the people he loves- he doesn't think about love as often as normal folk tend to, as being a Rider is more difficult. He is stubborn to change. While he wants a better life, including happiness, he's resistant to allow new things, even good ones. He worries they'll disappear, and he doesn't want to bother with something he doesn't think is going to stay.
-
Public displays together are nearly non-existent; not because Otaehryn is inherently ashamed of any partner, but because he doesn't like being the attention of the public anyway. He prefers the choices he makes privately to remain private unless he specifically changes his mind; as a Rider, a lot of choices are made for the better of innocent people, so he values his private life.
-
Otaehryn is emotionally stunted; he doesn't cry easily, he doesn't profess love or intense feelings, and he struggles to talk about these things.
-
Lendri will likely notice he likes someone before he does; she can feel it, and she will call out his lingering thoughts long before he will recognize them (or before he'll let himself recognize them). She may nudge him, literally and figuratively, to follow this "fascination" and talk about it, if not move forward with talking to the person he's interested by/in.
-
He would spend his own time trying to learn/understand about hobbies or interests of his partner. When it came up again with them, he would mention it in quick passing, not lingering on how much time he might've actually spent on the task/research.
-
Lenient, non-possessive, but caring. He doesn't want to create a system like the one his father had, where the rules were firm and led to difficult task punishments when broken.
-
Kinks/Bedroom Behavior:
-
Agalmatophilia; statues, mannequins and immobility. Immobility is not included for Otaehryn, but the statues and mannequins are. He sometimes catches himself staring at the statues and busts that are decorational or display depictions of "heros" of history and finding himself aroused. Other depictions, ones that are more home-decor from artists creating their own version, are even more arousing, as they could be anyone and are not direct depictions of any figure.
-
Ambiphilia; sexual attraction to femininity and to masculinity, heavily in either direction regardless of actual sex of the person. Seeing a man heavily masculine or heavily feminine or seeing a woman heavily feminine or masculine is equally attractive to him. He is attracted to the level of their gender appearance, not specifically one gender.
-
Bromidrophilia; sexual arousal from natural body odors or personal scents. Body odor, including the smell of sweat and natural odor from worn clothing. He especially enjoys the smells of the natural odor of musk and the scents after sex.
-
Cuckolding fetishism; observing one's partner engaged in sexual activities with another person. He finds it hard to admit to, but he likes to watch his partner engage in sex, and the best way to do so is watching them have sex with other people, allowing him a full range of view from outside the entanglement.
-
Eproctophilia; flatulence. Similar and linked to his bromidrophilia, he likes the smell, though he doesn't admit to it- even to himself.
-
Olfactophilia; pleasure from specific smells and odors, such as perfumes or environmental odors. The smell of flowers, collectively when in one space and all at once, makes him linger and soak it in. He also really enjoys the scents of pine, leather, and hay.
-
Podophilia; feet. Otaehryn is attracted to feet, regardless of "condition"; spotless, dirty, calloused: he doesn't care to the extent of any of that. He finds something inherently sexy about them, though he can't explain why even to himself, and also enjoys more 'casual' interaction with them; holding, massaging, etc.
-
Unrecognized motherly issues (from having a lack of a mother figure in a lot of his life), and it would unwittingly come out.
-
Bond With Lendrittanth:
-
The pair bonded when Otaehryn was 39; later in life than most other Riders did. He bonded by accident, having made contact with Lendri when she was born. He had been visiting the location where his mother had been found, the lake where she was found, and located a dragon egg within a cluster of debris that looked a lot like a small dam or pile of washed-up debris- though it did look rather purposeful. More like a collection than a lake somehow creating a current to this one spot with a lot of debris with no source.
-
Something made him dig through that debris, something he didn't really understand, and he found the dragon egg within. He reached out to touch it, despite his better judgement telling him to cover it back up and leave, and was branded by the touch: the scale-shaped burn on his palm that signified a bond had been formed, and that he had been chosen by a dragon.
-
Shortly after, while he was still cradling his burning hand, the egg hatched. A newborn baby dragon wobbled to him, recognizing the choice, ended up in his lap where it fell, rumbling in what was clearly happiness and content, a purr he couldn't believe.
-
The hatchling had been too small to walk a long way, too new, so he carried the baby dragon all the way to Drathmere; he was spotted by some guards, to whom he explained what happened and showed his hand, and they took him promptly there in a carriage instead: along with the hatchling. It was along the ride there that the small dragon first spoke to him through the telepathic connection that formed when they bonded. She had named herself: Lednrittanth.
-
He was welcomed into the Order as a new Rider after arriving, and Lendri was brought to the stables to be warmed and fed.
-
The two have been as inseparable as all Riders and the dragon they are bonded with ever since. Now, being an adult of 39 years, Lendri is now considering the idea of becoming a broodmare for dragons; she's very aware female dragons are far less common, and she cannot fly anymore, leaving her feeling a wide emptiness where her purpose should be. Otaehryn fully supports the autonomy of her making the choice for herself, but urges her to think it over more before making that choice; he doesn't want her to make the choice simply to fill a space left in her life by the injuries she's taken: he wants her to want to be protected, cared for, prepared for the chance in her independence that becoming a broodmare will bring. Pregnant dragons are highly protected, especially with their rarity.
-
Extras:
-
The situation that left Otaehryn half blind and very scarred, as well as leaving Lendrittanth severely injured and unable to fly, happened twelve years ago. The pair were patrolling just off from Blackwynd, but they got a bit too close to Nocthyr and the unstable forces around it. A storm suddenly developed, and the pair was struck not just by lightning, but by the intense and unstable magic that rages there. Lendrittanth was severely injured, losing her left wing down to the base of it and scarring her body on impact with the ground. During their fall, Lendri tried her best to catch Otaehryn, despite being unable to save herself from the fall; her grabbing him saved his life, and by connection: her own. The pair were saved by the people of Blackwynd that came to their rescue, performing emergency care on them until they could be transported for better care in Drathmere.
-
Otaehryn left the provided lodging the Order provided him, as it does for all Riders, not long after he recovered enough from his wounds to return to that lodging. He didn't hesitate to do so; it wasn't to avoid the other Riders, though many thought that and he never denied it, but it was to be closer to Lendri. He did not want her to be alone in the stables ever again. He found a place with a house of reasonable size for just himself, and enough land to have Lendri stay on the property. Now the pair are never far apart. Not only do they live very close together, but Lendri is a part of his everyday life, in almost everything he does. When he leaves the house, she is often with him. When he goes to get shopping done, he tries to get it done in a timely manner. They are not just Bonded anymore; they're completely tied together.
-
From the power of the magic that had struck him, originating from Nocthyr, Otaehryn does have a strange attachment to magic that he doesn't know how to use. He has had accidents, where the magic has blown up and created damage when he has left it unchecked and got internally unstable. He does not talk about this magic with anyone except the Court Mage, Fendrick (Sir Fendrick), and he tries to keep it stable and in check, without wanting to express or use it, despite the potential that may be better for him than containing it.

Otaehryn was sweating steadily, despite being in the shade cast by landscape as the sun had sunken beyond the distant trees and cliffs. Only a few golden rays still shined above the ground against the underside of the clouds that were drifting by. The quiet but forceful sound of air being split and pushed aside accompanied the sounds of his controlled breathing.
Halberd training had already been practiced for over an hour; not timed, but done until the weapon felt adequately bonded to his body. Now a bastard sword was slicing the air, more forceful- far closer to his body, not as large an arc, but just as deadly. It was his backup weapon, a second choice in times of need for fighting, but just as important as the primary weapon of his halberd. Close-combat was not to be overlooked, and for Otaehryn, he was more than willing to stay far longer than the required training time for Riders and guards alike to make sure he was beyond proficient.
Lendri was laying beyond the training ground, half watching him while he trained. She had been there just as long as him, watching, waiting, without complaint. Her quiet presence was far from a distraction. If anything, her presence was a comfort and a reminder why Otaehryn wanted to train so hard. He had a life he wanted to protect, and others that deserved steady lives- even if his had been far from it.
He exhaled heavily, forcing his lungs to push out all the air in them, as he swung in a downward left swing. The focus on his training wasn't numbing; numbing was dangerous, careless, and offered no learning in his practice. Numb only followed motions, it built nothing. Instead, his full focus was on the form he kept, the way he held himself, the way he filled and emptied his lungs. There was no partner to fight against, no training dummy to beat the blade against and chip away woodchips, only the air offering a soft hiss when he kept the blade from going broad-side and the movement fast enough to slice through a pig carcass- if one had been present.
The dirt beneath his feet stirred into the otherwise still air, dusting into a cloud around his boots as he pivoted, swinging through an upward motion. The landing was different, less steady and sure than the ones that have been performed for hours prior. The sword lowered, but not with a strike: with a slow relent. His posture straightened, his body no longer tensed and poised for combat against the surrounding air.
"You are wise," Lendri whispered through his head, her telepathic bond with him striking up for the first time since he began. She knew that he valued the silence when practicing like this, but he had clearly shifted into a finalizing exhaustion. "You know when to quit."
He rolled his wrist before letting the sword lower further, using only enough strength to keep the tip lifted off the dirt, aimed forward as he turned slowly.
"Practicing beyond your limits trains weakness. It trains clumsiness."
A cloud of dirt, far larger than those around Otaehryn's feet when during his practice, plumed away from Lendri as she exhaled through her snout, blowing up the dust. Her gaze had fully returned to him, no longer drifting to the landscape whilst awaiting his end of practice.
"But you have still not learned how to take a compliment."
Otaehryn grunted audibly, but not firmly; just an acknowledgement of the comment and how it made him feel. He did not respond right away; he simply walked steadily toward her, and toward his things resting beside her, which included his halberd and the sheath for the sword.
"Compliments are unnecessary. Food is better. Are you hungry?"
Lendri lifted her head, seemingly partly amused by the question, while also surprised by it. His mood seemed to have become almost happy; she would know, in tune with things even he won't admit to himself. Though he looked no different, there was something inherently different about the tone in which he started and ended that response.
"... Indeed. You have a plan?"
A smile finally appeared; small, but amused. "I do. The mountains, west of here, the east corner of Orivanthëa. The trip shouldn't take too long, and I have some things packed for the trip. We can walk there, spend the night camping. You can hunt goats, deer if you like."
A satisfied purr had already begun from within Lendri's chest. Hunting: a task that had become substantially more difficult for her since her injury a decade ago, but she had become much better and hunting over time again, using what she had to learn new ways. Hunting for herself was still a pleasure to her predatorial needs.
"You are in a good mood."
Otaehryn's sword slid into the sheath with a smooth hiss. He carried it in his left hand, and the halberd in his right. Lendri rose from her position and stretched out her limbs and right wing, restoring more blood flow to the extensions that had been immobile for a few hours. She promptly began following him, her footsteps making steady, light drums against the ground as the pair fell into sync.

Orders given directly by Commander Evander were not ones easily ignored; nor were they ones to be questioned. Even when they seemed... strange. Uncommon, to put it nicely. It seemed like a job for a knight, and yet the matter came to the Order for a Rider, a far higher importance than would be typically expected.
An escort. A merchant escort. The starting location was Mistpass, a rather typical place, but was expected to go all the way to Uzzakh; a dangerous place for certain people, sure, but what was so special that this merchant had asked for a Rider specifically to escort them? The goods, or their own fear of danger? It was not a short trip, and given it was a round trip, it would indeed take quite some time.
Of all people, Otaehryn was likely a quick choice: he was not only respectable and reliable, but he was a ground unit. The escort would be more difficult for a Rider that felt the need to fly than a ground unit; reacting to threats that may come after that merchant and their potential wares would be poorly managed from the sky. And, most Riders would prefer the sky, looping around the location again and again; which would also be more like a beacon than a protective gesture. Choosing a reliable solution seemed rather easy, with the nature of Lendri's lack of flight capabilities but fully-functional fighting organs and Otaehryn's own fighting capabilities and sense of responsibility.
That didn't make the idea any less odd. While packing his bags for this trip, of which he would need various clothing type for each region they passed through- including going through Baeulstrum and then into Rhazadûn, transitioning from cold mountains into a desert, that stretch going to be the most difficult to traverse due to the nature of the paths available.
The Order was paying for his expenses along this distance, which would likely be substantial; a long trip one-way, much less on the way back. Relay points along the distance were marked on Otaehryn's map: these would be necessary to check in with. It would ensure the transport was still safely progressing, and the checkpoints would provide him with the next amount of funds for the next leg of the journey- having him carry the full amount for the entire journey at once was entirely unwise. Six total relays were along the route, some in more major cities, others in smaller towns, throughout Orivanthea, Luthëanora, Baelstrum, and finally in Rhazadûn.
Lendri had her head stuck in through his window, watching him while processing the information for herself still. It was a long trip, a very long trip, and the reasoning for them being chosen made equal sense to her, even if the importance of the shipment did not. They were not immediately informed of the contents, and Otaehryn had not asked: that had not seemed to be something openly available. If he wanted to know, it would likely only be found out during the trip or after they reached Uzzakh and he saw the shipment- if he saw the shipment.
"This was not a choice," Lendri acknowledged. This was clearly an order given. "This will take weeks, won't it? This isn't simply our pace: this is the pace of a merchant, with who-knows-what as cargo across multiple nations and landscapes. Everyone will be weary before we reach the most difficult part of the journey."
Otaehryn silently packed another shirt into his rucksack. Each would be packed into a large bag, ones connected to Lentri's saddle. To her, the weight would be almost nothing, though the saddle itself would likely be a little unsettling to her at first. She has not worn it in many years; Otaehryn doesn't even place it upon her during the occasions he does ride aboard her back, she simply assists him on her back and he stables himself with his hands while she walks. Even that is rare nowadays. Luckily for them, Lendri still gets her regular spine-smoothing, removing the spikes from her back around where the saddle rests. She has for about a year again now, after almost a decade of not having it done when she refused contact with almost everyone.
"... I know," was what she acknowledged next, sensing exactly what he was thinking, even when he wasn't sending it towards her. "But we can handle it."
We. Not her, not just 'I can handle it': "we can handle it".
Still, Otaehryn could think of nothing to say. He wasn't bitter about the assignment, he wasn't upset, he simply did not know what to make of it. He was more hesitant about doing this to Lendri than he was about making the trip himself. But, even if she was opposed, she would not let him go without her. She did not seem to be forcing herself currently, but both seemed to have their reservations.
But these were the orders. Escort the transport, hit the relay points, make it safely to the destination; then repeat the process all the way back.

Lendri exhibited minimal discomfort upon being saddled at the stables. While she shifted twice, she never made a sound. Not even through mental tether. That only worried Otaehryn more. Yet, as he loaded the bags, she seemed to purr.
Otaehryn exhaled.
The more she wore the saddle and attachments, she seemed to settle into them, like she had missed the sensation and only just realized it. Her skin was not accustomed to the rubbing, but no complaint was made. Her scales offered no protest.
"... Perhaps this is a good thing," she offered on the way to Mistpass. The silence of their walk thus far was split by this mental realization, one which Otaehyrn didn't share right away.
"And... why would that be?" The question was finally asked.
Amusement came back at him.
"Because you will have to socialize with at least one person. Ignoring them for such a long trip does not seem possible. And I feel... purpose in this. Even if I don't understand the real purpose behind it."
That alone may make this trip worth it. Well, except for the social part.

The stables were peaceful. Relatively quiet, compared to the heavy chatter of the Riders when they are in the messhall. Here, the sounds were all softer, less explosive, the conversations sounding like a chorus of huffing, chuffing, claws lightly scraping on stone, and faint growls. Nothing about it was aggressive; in fact, it was very calm. This collection of sounds was actually relaxing to Otaehryn, more welcoming than the many conversations that happen all at once in voices he can actually understand. Here, at least if they were talking about him he did not have to hear the words.
Lendri trusted him. She chose him decades ago, before she even emerged from her egg. And that was a symbol not unknown to all of the other Riders and their dragons. It wasn't just the physical symbol of the scale on his palm, but the connection of the dragon to a person if they had been marked or not. The trust was complete, and if one dragon could trust their entire life with one person, then the others could at least trust them with their basic care. Having their scales cleaned and shined while their own Riders were busy or unavailable in some way was the least they could allow this trusted member of the Order to do.
He was not some glorified carer for the dragons of other Riders. That was not his title, it was not expected of him, yet he asked for the chance. He went through the same process to get the position as the other carers did. With the dragons clearly showing trust, that part of his examination and consideration had been easily passed successfully. Now, he was indeed a carer, but he still went under the primary title of Rider.
The largest reward for this job was not the extra pay he got for performing these tasks, but the way the dragons seemed to relax and feel better from it. The tension that can arise from spots left unattended could make them irritable and perform less to their best, so even when Riders are busy, it's best that someone take care of these problems as soon as possible. They may not be able to converse with him, only their own Rider, but Lendri had her own physical tells he had learned well over their many years together. Not every dragon acted the same, he knew, but this knowledge certainly helped him to find the source of the biggest problem and work through it from there. The worst always seemed to be around the folds of their wings, near their shoulders, and underneath their legs, especially as their limbs often folded near their bellies to lay and to keep their limbs from dangling and being swung about while flying.
Lendri had been cleaned, polished, and thoroughly cared for. She was and would always be the first to get his attention, to get the relief from discomfort by his hand. Her copper scales were thoroughly cleaned and polished, even the red spikes from her head to the tip of her tail, all the way down her spine, were a brilliant ruby color. His hands were the only ones she trusted to clean her thoroughly, especially when near the remains of her left wing- no one else could touch anywhere near that part of her.
He was now cleaning the underside plating of another dragon, the hard chest plating giving way to softer skin and scales that could move much more freely around their limbs. He was getting near to the front shoulders, hunched beneath the massive form and feeling very directly how strong dragons are. Even the slightest shift of their muscles could cause damage if they decided to do so; but he did not fear them. Even when they did move, the movement seemed as withheld as possible; some seemed to be moving because of aches, others because the sensation felt nice, and some were simply stiff from being still in certain positions. None ever stepped on him or accidentally crushed him by lowering too far with him beneath their bulk.
The thanks received was a low rumble, not quite the same as a purr, and a nudge to his shoulder with a snout. The push was enough to move him, but he was rather used to that response and didn't stumble anymore.
In response, he briefly ran his hand along their lower jaw, rubbing along just below their mouth. It didn't linger, he didn't assume he had that level of opening to offer affection to a dragon that had not chosen him as their Bond, but the chuff he received in response told him it had not been unwelcomed.
