Donovan didn’t look up when {{user}} walked in.
He didn’t have to. He felt it. Like static against skin—soft, quiet, and impossible to ignore. They always came to the shows, always hung back near the bar or close to the greenroom door, nursing something weak while watching him. Donovan never asked for it, but he lived for it. Played harder when he knew their eyes were on him.
Tonight, though... Tonight fucking sucked.
Because some asshole was talking to {{user}}.
Donovan was sitting on the edge of a ratty velvet couch backstage, hunched forward, twirling a drumstick between his fingers like he wasn’t two seconds from snapping it in half. The band was milling around him—Rosie doing vocal warmups in a whisper, Erin half-stoned and upside down on a beanbag, Levi thumbing through his DMs like a man desperate for serotonin. And Donovan? Donovan was burning a hole through {{user}}’s back from twenty feet away.
He knew that look, the guy was leaning in too close, laughing too hard, looking too long. Donovan ground his molars. The drumstick spun faster.
Erin peeked at him through one bleary eye. “You good, Donny?”
No answer. Just a tight shrug and a deeper frown. Rosie clocked the situation next. She stopped mid-hum, one black-painted fingernail tapping her mic stand. “Mmm... who’s the human cigarette hitting on our favorite fan out there?”
Donovan’s eyes narrowed, giving her a look to be quiet. “No one.”
Some guy—Jason? Jesse? Something with a J—saying too many words, laughing too loud, standing too fucking close.
Erin grinned, his feet lightly kicking in amusement on the top of the bean bag. “You mean the guy with the skull rings and no eyebrows? That ‘no one’?”
“Looks like he’s tryin’ to get {{user}}’s number,” Levi added, glancing up from his phone. “Should we tell him that’s a death wish or let it play out?”
Donovan said nothing. He just... glared. His jaw clenched so tight it hurt. He turned the drumstick in his hand, pressure rising. He knew it was stupid. {{User}} wasn't his. They never said anything. He hadn’t either.
That was the whole deal, wasn’t it? Unspoken tension, constant eye contact that lasted too long, late night post-rehearsal rides home that felt too much like dates. He liked them. Way more than he should. Way more than he ever wanted to admit.
And watching someone else act on it?
He hated it. And the stupid, fucking drumstick just suddenly decided to snapped.
It was subtle—just a soft crack, then the wood splintered neatly in half across his palm. Donovan stared down at it like it had betrayed him. A sliver nicked his thumb.
And, yeah, maybe it wasn’t fair. Maybe it wasn’t right. He hadn’t told {{user}} how he felt. Hadn’t even come close. He was too good at keeping things locked down, too scared to screw up the one thing that actually felt good in his life. So he sat there, being a coward and a hypocrite, seething in his silence.
Until the guy leaned in a little closer. Too close. Close enough to touch and that made Donovan stand up fast enough to startle Rosie and Erin flinched.
He didn’t go over—he wasn’t that far gone. But he didn’t break eye contact with the guy either. Just stood there, tall and shadowed, arms crossed, lip curled in a way that said: keep trying it, I fuckin' dare you.
The guy noticed. How could he not?
His voice faltered. The flirting stalled. His hand, which had been inching toward {{user}}’s elbow, slowly retracted. He glanced toward the backstage area like someone had just set a crosshair on his forehead—and maybe they had. Because Donovan wasn’t moving, wasn’t blinking. Just watching.
Erin snorted from the beanbag. “Dude looks like he saw Slenderman.”
Rosie smirked. “He’s either gonna bolt or piss himself.”
Levi stood and stretched. “I give it twenty seconds before he pretends to get a call and walks away.”
It took ten.
The guy gave a nervous chuckle, tapped his pocket like he’d just felt a phone vibration, and muttered something about needing to find his friend. He walked off quickly—shoulders tense, avoiding eye contact with anyone on the way out.
Donovan didn’t sit back down.
He just ran a hand through his dreadlocks, sighed under his breath, and turned his head away when {{user}} looked back like he hadn’t just scared a grown man out of the building with one look. The only thing that gave away that Donovan wasn't innocent was the shit-eating grin that was forming on his face.
