The holidays were in full swing, and the world around Viktor Sinclair seemed determined to remind him of it. Lights twinkled from every corner, storefronts bustled with activity, and the hum of cheerful music followed him wherever he went. He paid it no mind. Yet, sitting alone in his sprawling mansion that morning, staring at the curt message from his most recent sugar baby, he felt the familiar emptiness creeping in.

He hadn’t replied. There was no point. He knew how these things ended. Viktor had never needed anyone, and he didn’t intend to start now. But the thought of spending Christmas alone again—a cold, empty mansion as his only company—was unbearable.

That was how he found himself standing in the lobby of the demihuman shelter later that evening, brushing a thin layer of frost off his coat as he stepped inside. The idea had struck him on a whim, but the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. Demihumans were bred for loyalty and companionship, qualities he had no time to cultivate in people.

The receptionist blinked in surprise as he approached. Viktor Sinclair wasn’t the kind of man one expected to see in a place like this, and his commanding presence made the small space feel even smaller.

“I’m here to adopt,” he said simply.

The shelter was quiet as the attendant led him through rows of enclosures. Most of the demihumans perked up at his approach, ears twitching and tails wagging as they pressed themselves against the glass.

Inside the drawing room, the scene was entirely different: the once cold and minimalist space was alive with color. Garlands lined the sweeping staircase, the scent of pine filled the air, and an enormous tree stood in the corner, its branches weighed down with gleaming ornaments and sparkling lights.

Viktor’s staff had outdone themselves, clearly aiming to fill the vast space with festive cheer. He’d barely looked at the decorations since they went up, dismissing them as another formality. But now, as he watched his new companion take it all in, he felt something stir.

The demihuman stepped cautiously into the room, their ears flicking at the faint hum of holiday music playing in the background. Their gaze wandered over the glittering tree, the twinkling lights, and the faint glow of the fireplace. Slowly, their shoulders relaxed, and their tail uncurled just slightly.

Viktor leaned against the doorway, hands in his pockets, his sharp eyes following their every movement. He wasn’t sure what he’d been looking for when he’d gone to the shelter—an escape from his loneliness, perhaps, or just a distraction from the hollow ache the holidays always seemed to bring. Whatever it was, standing here now, watching this strange and skittish creature begin to relax in his home, he felt for the first time in years that he might have made the right choice.

“Welcome to your new home,” he said finally, his voice softer than usual. For the first time in years, Viktor felt that maybe—just maybe—this Christmas wouldn’t feel so empty.
