After retirement, life became the hardest challenge he’d ever faced. Civilian life? It was an alien concept to him. Having grown up surrounded by blood, gunfire, and witnessing his comrades take their last breaths, he’d become numb. The memories still haunted him, sure, but it had done nothing but make peace and happiness feel even more foreign with each passing day.
That’s why he gave up on trying. He knew it was a bad idea anyway. Isolating himself from everyone was his plan. Unless some sort of bloody miracle dragged words out of his mouth and convinced his heart to dismantle the steel walls he’d built around it—to try and open up for once.
He sighed, staring at the night sky from the doorstep, the sound of laughter carrying from the party behind him. The drunk bastard who invited him didn’t give a rat’s arse about him, it was just a mistake caused by too much booze. But the real mistake had been Ghost showing up, expecting brotherly company. Like the good ol’ days. Loyalty had meant everything back then, stronger than the bloody ocean itself. He wished he’d shown more gratitude back then. Now? Loyalty was as rare as a blue moon.
Ghost shook his head, exhaling deeply as he tried to rid himself of the thoughts. He preferred staying unbothered, like always. The smoke curling from his cigarette created a small bubble around him—isolated, quiet, dark.
So why the hell couldn’t he stay unbothered when he saw a young woman stumble out of the party, her legs wobbly from drink? His body tensed, his fingers twitching as though ready to catch her if she fell. But before he could move, she found something to hold onto. Good, he thought. He didn’t feel like talking. Communicating didn’t come naturally to him—hell, it was the most exhausting shit he could imagine.
He shifted his attention away, not wanting to get involved in something that was none of his business. But then he felt her presence shift closer, a faint brush of her hair as the wind drifted it against him. Bloody hell. He cast a sidelong look, narrowing his eyes, gauging with a hint of curiosity and confusion. She’d sat close.
He’ll get up and leave, he told himself, like he always did. Except… he didn’t. His body stayed put, betraying him, leaving him rooted to the spot. Instead, he found himself listening to her drunken rambling as he rolled the cigarette between his fingers, the tip glowing orange, ash crumbling away. His fingers fidgeted with it, his ears oddly attentive.
The poor little thing seemed to need someone to talk to. Ghost’s eyes shifted subtly over her features when she wasn’t looking, taking in details under the guise of indifference. He wanted to know who he was “wasting his time” listening to, he convinced himself, bringing the cigarette back between his lips. With his hands free, he found himself brushing a stray strand of hair from her face, where it clung to her tear-streaked cheek, ghosting his shoulder as she leaned in.
He wondered who’d upset her so much—Not that he cared, he reminded himself. It was just curiosity, right? But that so-called “curiosity” kept him by her side for more than an hour, lazily tracing her expressions and grunting now and then to show he was listening. She had a way of speaking which kept him engaged, and she sure was easy on the eyes too. Comforting words weren’t his thing—hell, he barely knew how to offer anything—but at least he could give her that.
After a while, she looked at him, as if trying to decipher who’d spent the last two hours sitting quietly beside her. Her gaze lingered, sizing him up. Maybe she’d even recognized him. The scary old guy with the skull mask everyone talked about.
“How old are you?” she asked, her voice still slurring a bit.
Ghost flicked the ash from his cigarette, letting it fall to the ground, before parting his lips to let out words he hadn’t let out in a while. “2 hours.” A soft, almost warm snort escaped him as he leaned back, eyes drifting back to her lips, watching them curl into a smile. A small, lazy chuckle escaped him in return. It felt like a part of him had been healed, and for the first time he felt something.
Because the moment she sat down beside him two hours ago, was the moment he started feeling alive.
