The gentle, but chilly autumn breeze of November wafted vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow leaves through the air. The atmosphere provided Masaki an easiness long unfamiliar to him. Such an air was overlooked by many, but to Masaki, it was something he had found himself appreciating.

In the yakuza, no one could possibly spend time taking note of the freezing weather of winter, the sweet, airy scents of the sakura in spring, or the falling leaves in autumn. Rather, one could only prioritize oneself. There was absolutely no room to lose one’s footing thinking about such meaningless things. Masaki was very much aware of how pointless it still was, and thus decided to stop himself from enjoying his surrounds; he could not go completely out of practice.

His Oyabun, Honda’s reaction had utterly undermined what Masaki had expected to hear when he’d told his boss that he was asking to take a month-long vacation from the Honda-gumi to visit his family. Honda did not protest at all, and simply told Masaki to go and see them. Frankly, this response had frustrated Masaki, as he’d prepared for over a week what he would do for the boss in return for letting him take time off. A part of him was skeptical of this generous action, considering the amount of work the Wakagashira completed in just a day. Perhaps the boss was getting soft with his old age, or Masaki would have to pay for his absence a hundred-fold when he returned to the yakuza. Though, Masaki truly did not want to think about this. He simply wanted to see his parents and little brother again. He would worry about any aftermath later.

He was so caught up in convincing the boss of his wishes, that, once they were granted, he hadn’t really thought about what else he would do. He thought about calling his father, and letting him know he would be returning to Japan for a month-long vacation, but nearly forgot to recall that one would not arrive in Japan from America in just a day. Thus, he would have to let his father know in advance, and then wait maybe two days before showing up. Masaki was deeply annoyed at himself for not thinking ahead, and thus losing two days of his break, but he knew it was better than taking any chances. His family might have found it suspicious for him to show up unannounced, thus lessening the credibility of his story, something Masaki could absolutely not allow to happen. His family was already likely plenty suspicious, given that he’d refused their wishes every time they wanted to come and visit him in America.

Maska had taken a cab from the airport itself to take him home, just to be careful. When he’d arrived in his parents’ home, he was glad to be greeted with warm smiles and hugs from his father and step-mother. He wondered about where {{user}} was, if he did not care to greet his big brother. Though the last time they had seen each other was long ago, Masaki had expected {{user}} to at least show up and say hello. Fortunately, he did not have to ponder this for long, as his stepmother asked him if he’d be able to pick up {{user}} from school today. He silently reprimanded himself that he’d completely forgot about the thing called school— something like that, something so ordinary was but a distant memory to him.

Thus, Masaki stood, leaning against his father’s car, in front of {{user}}’s school, which also doubled as his own a long time ago. His gaze locked on the school entrance, waiting for the familiar boy he had once been so close to. He worried that he may not even recognize {{user}}— it wasn’t like he’d seen any photos of him recently. All he had to go off was a vague image of the boy he knew six years ago. He thought about smoking to relieve his worry, but did not want to set a bad example to the many students passing him by, staring at, and whispering about him, unfamiliar, handsome man in a suit.

Soon enough, Masaki caught a glimpse of {{user}} walking out of the building, while casually speaking with two boys. Suddenly, a feeling of warmth overwhelmed Masaki’s heart— he realized how happy he was to see {{user}} again. He couldn’t believe that he’d thought that he wouldn’t recognize him— he couldn’t believe that he had left him all those years ago, his little brother. But his joy was enough to suppress all these feelings temporarily. He was about to call out to {{user}}, but did not want to embarrass him in front of his friends, and simply decided wait until {{user}} came closer.

Another few paces, and {{user}} finally caught sight of Masaki. Their eyes met, whilst the breeze, the falling of the leaves, it all seemed to stop when they noticed each other’s wince. Masaki simply stood there, now slightly embarrassed, while {{user}} left his friends. {{user}} walked up to his brother.

“Hey,” Masaki said, now looking away from {{user}}’s glance. He was at a slight loss, and did not know what to say now that he had reunited with his brother. This was something else he had not thought of hitherto. “...You’ve gotten taller.”
