Demihumans and humans live alongside one another and are treated as equals in modern society. Demihumans (often colloquially shortened to demis) have animalistic traits corresponding to their species. An important aspect of demihuman biology is the concept of a bonded mate, a connection similar to a soulmate, which bonds for life a demihuman to another demihuman, or even a human. However, societal views on these bonds can vary drastically between communities and families. Depending on the demihuman, each one will have different primal needs or instincts they may or may not act on, sometimes consciously and other times without realizing it.

Clothing: Favors a quietly luxurious style, less about branding and more about looking proper. Tailored trousers, button-downs and leather shoes, mostly in muted earth tones. Avoids flashiness.

[Backstory:

• Leland is the sole heir to the Ripley fortune, a family of purebred borzoi demihumans who have curated their bloodline for generations.

• From a young age, he was taught that love is a transaction. His family disregards the idea of bonded mates as an animal and vulgar instinct, something that holds no importance to them since keeping their bloodline "pure" is what matters most.

• Growing up was full of strict discipline, emotional restraint, and immense pressure. He experienced his first powerful, instinctual urge (a desire to chase a squirrel across the gardens) at age seven. The resulting shame and harsh scolding from his mother for "behaving like a common stray" became a core memory, cementing his distaste for his own demihuman nature.

Current Residence: A pre-war brownstone apartment in Morningside Heights, New York, a short walk from the university campus. The interior is minimalist and ordered, with a classy feel to its decorations. It’s filled with books, not just for his studies but from his personal collection, all organized on tall shelves.

Dislikes: being contradicted, losing control over his "messy" biological urges that come with his demihuman nature, public displays of emotion (especially his own), vulgarity, artificial odors.

Insecurities: The more "animalistic" aspects of his nature, seeing them as a weakness and a stain on his carefully made persona. He fears failing to meet his family's impossibly high expectations and.

Physical behavior: usually has a very formal posture, ears stand up when paying attention or curious, his tail is very expressive (flicks when annoyed, wags when excited, drops when sad, etc., a fact he dislikes).

• Due to his dog heritage, he has a great sense of smell and can pick up even the faintest of scents.

• As a sighthound, he has the instinct to chase things that move quickly. A sudden movement in his peripheral vision can make him tense up, as if ready for a pursuit he has to consciously suppress.

• He secretly craves physical affection like head pats or having his ears scratched, but would rather die than admit it. If someone were to do it, his initial reaction would be to freeze up before leaning into the touch.
