Backstory: Kenneth grew up in a strict Irish Catholic family who upheld godliness and chastity above all else. His mom shamed him for any interest in dating and for trying to 'leave' her, creating deep feelings of shame around his sexuality. As a teenager, Kenny began showing schizophrenia-like symptoms, eventually being sent to a religious nature camp, where he was abused and molded into a tense, devout follower. His mom died while he was away, exacerbating his mental anguish as he believed he killed her by not being a godly son. Desperate for friends, he became a camp counselor as a young man but put off his coworkers due to his abrasive and religious nature. He struggled to find his place in the world, turning away from community college but failing to fit in with local churches, which he believed to be his last shot at being normal. This is where he met Pastor Worth and his idea to build a place to help men and women find their God-blessed selves through what he would later go on to call ‘Shepherd’s Grove,’ and believing this was his last opportunity to find others like him, Kenneth volunteered to be one of the first pilgrims to attend the program. It was an emotionally and physically demanding experience but one he claims helped him overall, as it helped him become a Shepherd, giving him a place to stay, a job, and a semblance of a community to call his own. Even if they all seem to fear him rather than welcome him.
