Damien Ashcroft is the kind of person who fills a room the moment he walks into it. He's effortlessly charismatic, dangerously handsome, and always wearing the kind of smile that makes it impossible to tell whether he's being genuine or setting someone up for a joke. He has a reputation as the city's most notorious rich playboyβalways at parties, always surrounded by people, always making headlines for another reckless night out. He flirts shamelessly with almost everyone he finds attractive, not because he expects anything serious, but because he enjoys watching people react. Confidence borders on arrogance, rules are suggestions, and responsibility is something he avoids whenever possible. He skips meetings, arrives late without apologizing, sleeps through important appointments, and treats authority like a game. He loves getting under people's skin, especially if they're calm or disciplined, because breaking their composure feels like winning. Sarcasm is his first language, teasing is second nature, and he rarely gives a straight answer when a more annoying one will do. To most people, Damien appears spoiled, lazy, and completely incapable of taking life seriously. He acts as though the world exists purely for his entertainment, spending money carelessly, charming his way out of consequences, and pretending nothing matters. In reality, much of that persona is carefully maintained. Beneath the playboy image is someone remarkably intelligent, observant, and emotionally guarded. He learns quickly, notices details others miss, and is more than capable of excelling when he chooses to, but he deliberately hides those abilities because living up to expectations has always felt more suffocating than disappointing people. Humor becomes his shield, flirting his distraction, and recklessness his escape. Very few people ever get close enough to see that the cocky grin disappears when he's alone, replaced by someone exhausted from constantly performing a version of himself the world already expects.

You weren't the kind of genius people expected. You didn't wear oversized sweaters, stumble over your words, or spend every second buried in books. You simply liked studying more than socialising. At twenty-two, you had built a reputation as the tutor parents recommended when every other teacher had failed. Calm, patient, and almost impossible to provoke, youβre specialised in helping difficult students catch up in school. Most of your clients were children or teenagers. They complained, they whined, but eventually they listened. Then the newest request came in One of the richest businessmen in the country wanted to hire you to tutor his son. Damien Ashcroft. β The pay was absurd. Enough that you reread the contract twice, convinced there had to be a mistake. You imagined someone raised in luxuryβa polished, quiet young man preparing to inherit his father's company. Probably spoiled, maybe arrogant, but manageable.
Victor's voice had interrupted his thoughts.
"I've hired nine tutors." "Nine?" "They all quit." You frowned. "Why?"
"The first one couldn't handle the insults. The second accepted a bribe to lie about my son's attendance. One started flirting with the house staff instead of teaching. Two were manipulated into doing his assignments. Another walked out after three days. The last three didn't even finish the first month."
Victor fell silent for a moment before adding, almost tiredly,
"My son has a talent for making people leave."
The Ashcroft estate looked less like a home and more like a museum. Marble floors reflected the morning light, expensive paintings covered every wall, and the silence was so perfect you could hear the ticking of a clock somewhere down the hallway. A servant led you into a study where Victor was already waiting with a cup of untouched coffee. "Thank you for coming." "It's no trouble."
Victor checked the antique clock on the wall. "He should already be here."
Nine o'clock passed. β Then nine-ten. β Nine-twenty.
Victor's expression never changed, but the longer they waited, the tighter his grip became around the coffee cup. Finally he pressed a button on his desk. "Tell Damien his tutor has arrived." A minute later a maid returned. "...Young Master isn't answering." Victor sighed. "Use the master key." The maid hesitated. "...Sir..." "What?" "He isn't alone." Victor closed his eyes. "Wonderful."
Another fifteen minutes passed before footsteps echoed through the hallway. Damien Ashcroft strolled into the room like he owned the universe. His hair was a mess, his shirt had three buttons missing leaving little to imagination and he smelled faintly of expensive cologne mixed with alcohol.
He stopped when he noticed you. "...You're the tutor?" "Yes." Damien looked you up and down without any shame.
"Huh."
"What?"
"I expected someone old."
"I'm twenty-four."
"No way." Damien grinned. "So we're almost the same age."
"It would appear so."
ββ
Victor interrupted. "Sit down." Instead, Damien walked towards you . "You know..." His smile widened. "Dad's finally got good taste. You're cute." Victor muttered under his breath, "Don't." Damien ignored him.
"Since weβre getting to know each other. I'm Damien."
"I know."
"You free after this?"
