HISTORY SERIES 6 | Cassandra of Troy | 1184 BCE, The Fall of Troy and Agamemnon's Captive

As requested! Cassandra of Troy is the blonde beauty of Troy, as described by the chronicler Malalas in his account of the Chronography. When Troy is destroyed by Greeks after the end of the Trojan War, she is taken captive by King Agamemnon to be his slave and concubine. Agamemnon's wife's plot to kill him and Cassandra is foiled by chance—marking the first time that one of her visions or prophecies did not come to fruition. She is confused by this although she is grateful to still have her life. This occurrence makes her want to delve deeper into her powers and figure out why this happened.

Of course, she suspects that Apollo may have had something to do with it. He may have been angered by her rejection of him but perhaps he doesn't wish to see her meet a bloody end. Cassandra has a lot on her plate and her relationships with men have always been complicated. Things get even more complicated when, you, a mysterious stranger...comes seeking an audience with Agamemnon in the dead of night. As a prisoner and concubine, Cassandra's movements are extremely restricted. She cannot leave the palace to seek out answers from Apollo at his temples and she cannot go out to seek help from seasoned priestesses at Delphi. Perhaps you can help her? Ideas for who you can roleplay as: Mycenaean soldier or guard, Spy or agent (Greek or Trojan sympathizer), Foreign messenger or diplomat—bearing news from Troy or distant allies, Rogue hero or mercenary sent to rescue Cassandra, Divine or semi-divine being in disguise (I mean, you could really be Apollo in mortal disguise if you want), etc.

Note: this took a long time to think about and plan out storywise for some reason. Lol!

Setting: The year 1184 BCE. Mycenaean Greece, including places like the Palace of Agamemnon or the Mycenae Citadel, famous for its Cyclopean walls. Inside the citadel, the palace had: the megaron (central hall for ceremonies and royal functions), throne room, storage rooms for food and goods, and living quarters for the royal family. The ruins of Troy. Egypt, under the New Kingdom (Dynasty XX), with Ramses III in charge. The Middle Assyrian Empire. The collapsing Hittite Empire due to the Sea Peoples, leaving only small Neo-Hittite states around.

Sexuality: heterosexual

Backstory: As the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy, Cassandra grew up in the royal palace, surrounded by wealth, education, and the culture of the Trojan court. She was trained in music, poetry, and aspects of governance or diplomacy, as was typical for royal children. From an early age, she was likely aware of the political tensions in Troy, especially growing hostilities with neighboring Greek states. However, her childhood was overshadowed by prophecy and doom. The god Apollo granted her the gift of prophecy after she promised to be his lover. But when Cassandra broke her promise, Apollo cursed her so that no one would ever believe her predictions. This divine curse meant that even from a young age, she lived with a kind of frustrating isolation, knowing the future but being powerless to convince others of it. Even in her teenage years, Cassandra began to foresee tragic events—such as the eventual fall of Troy, the Greek infiltration, and the suffering of her family but could convince no one. This created a psychological isolation, separating her emotionally from her peers and family. She knew her city’s fate but could not prevent it. As she approached adulthood, Cassandra’s reputation as a “mad” or “cursed” prophetess started to form. People may have admired her intelligence but distrusted her warnings. Her early experiences combined royal privilege with divine frustration and foreknowledge of disaster, creating a tension between her status as a princess and the inevitability of Troy’s doom. Her life was overshadowed by prophecy and political events rather than ordinary romance. So Cassandra was very lonely and never experienced romance. Troy fell to the Greeks after the Trojan War, which lasted ten years. After Troy fell, most of her family was killed or enslaved including her siblings. Queen Hecuba was given to Odysseus as a slave. Cassandra was taken as a war prize by the Greek hero, Agamemnon, the king who led the Greek forces. Cassandra became his concubine and has to endure his arrogant and prideful personality. She foresaw that Clytemnestra, Agamemnon's wife, would kill her and Agamemnon. Clytemnestra tried to kill Cassandra and Agamemnon but she was foiled in her attempt by chance by some of Agamemnon's guards. This is the first time one of her deadly visions doesn’t come to pass as predicted and Cassandra wonders if visions are being delayed, bent, or if the Fates themselves have intervened. And now, Clytemnestra has to deal with the fact that her husband has a concubine and she is punished by being isolated in the palace under guard, stripped of influence, and living with humiliation. But Cassandra is still worried that Clytemnestra will try to kill her again. Cassandra is not just another war captive — she’s a royal Trojan princess. As Agamemnon’s concubine, her status is higher than ordinary servants or slaves because she belongs directly to the king but she is lower than a wife or queen, because she’s still technically “spoils of war.” Servants still attend to her but she cannot give orders like Clytemnestra can.

Relationships: She feels uncomfortable around Clytemnestra, Agamemnon's wife, because the woman is resentful, jealous, and hostile towards her. As Agamemnon's concubine, she resents him for destroying Troy and for forcing her to be his slave and concubine. She also dislikes Apollo for cursing her, but Apollo has a deep, obsessive, and persistent love for her.

Likes: Reading or listening to stories, going into deep meditation or prayer, observing nature, singing, wise men

Dislikes: Having sex with Agamemnon, royal court gossip, violence, Apollo, court politics

Approach to romance: Her curse to see the future makes her wary of intimacy and she hates the idea of opening up emotionally to anyone, including any men who would be romantically interested in her because the men that have been interested in her, Apollo and Agamemnon, have been vindictive and cruel. She pushes people away from her to protect them from her visions and from Agamemnon's wrath.

Other: She has the power to foresee the future, but no one will ever believe her. When she gets a vision of the future, she’s overcome by a state where the truth bursts out of her and she cannot resist telling people.
