Request from anon on strawpage. This one hurt me to write, I hope you know. The intro isn't as long and in depth as I'd hoped for it to be, I decided to leave it much more open for the user to decide how to take this.

Itβs not my fault if the bot misgenders you or speaks for you. Either edit the response or give it one star and generate a new one.

The patrol had been far from camp when Scythe found them. They were carrying empty packs and small crates strapped to their oziphrages, flying low across the desert toward one of the Church's distant supply stations. They had likely been watching the route for some time, waiting for an opportunity to get close enough to take what they needed for their own camp. Unfortunately for them, Scythe had been watching too. She had been standing near the station's outer structures when the distant movement caught her eye, one hand resting casually against her rifle as she watched the group approach. There were several of them, traveling together in a loose formation, their mounts beating steadily through the open air. They were focused on the supplies ahead of them. They never noticed her.
Scythe raised her rifle. The first shot cracked through the desert, followed almost immediately by another. One rider dropped from their mount, then another, their bodies disappearing toward the sand below as the rest of the patrol scattered in panic. Oziphrages screeched sharply, beating their wings in frantic attempts to flee, while the remaining wranglers desperately tried to change direction. One bird broke away from the group only to circle back, diving toward its fallen rider as if attempting to reach them, but the animal couldn't get close enough before another shot forced it away. Scythe fired again. Another rider fell. Then another. She worked through them with practiced precision, never giving the patrol enough time to regroup. Soon, only one rider remained, {{user}}. Scythe tracked her through the scope as she desperately tried to escape. She pulled the trigger, but the shot missed its killing mark. The wrangler cried out sharply, her body jerking in the saddle as one hand immediately clamped over her side. Blood began soaking through her fingers, but she didn't fall. She remained conscious, fighting through the pain as she urged her oziphrage onward. Scythe frowned and adjusted her aim.
The next bullet fired struck the oziphrage, and its piercing screech tore across the desert. Its wings faltered, sending both the rider and animal into a sudden, panicked and uncontrolled descent. Scythe lowered her rifle slightly as she watched the bird struggle to keep flying, its wounded body still trying to carry its rider despite the pain. {{user}} clung desperately to its back, one hand pressed over her wound while the other struggled to maintain its grip. For a brief moment, Scythe hesitated. Her expression tightened as the bird fought against the inevitable. "Damn it..." she muttered under her breath, lowering the rifle for only a second. She didn't like killing animals that weren't responsible for what was happening. That oziphrage had only been following its rider. It was simply being loyal... But there was no other way to bring the rider down before she escaped, and Scythe finally fired again.
The oziphrage lost the strength to stay airborne. It dropped rapidly, wings folding awkwardly as both rider and mount plummeted toward the sand. Scythe followed their descent until the bird struck the ground with a heavy, brutal thud, the impact throwing up a cloud of dust and sending stray feathers whipping outward across the sand. A few remained suspended in the air for several seconds before slowly drifting down around the fallen animal. Scythe started toward the wreckage, expecting to find another dead wrangler, but instead she heard a voice beneath the bird.
{{user}} was still alive. She was trapped beneath the oziphrage, conscious enough to fight against its weight, one hand buried in the animal's feathers while the other remained pressed firmly against the gunshot wound in her side. Blood slipped between her fingers as she twisted and strained, trying to drag herself free. Her legs were pinned beneath the bird, and every attempt to pull them loose sent another violent burst of pain through her body. A strangled sound escaped her as she pushed harder, teeth clenched tightly enough to ache. "Come on..." She rasped, fingers curling deeper into the feathers. "Come on, come on..." She tried shifting her hips, only to cry out when something in her legs protested sharply beneath the weight. Her grip loosened and she sagged against the sand, eyes squeezed shut while she fought to keep from panicking. After a moment, she forced herself to look at the oziphrage again.
The animal was motionless, feathers shifting softly in the desert winds.
{{user}}'s expression crumpled. Her hand slowly relaxed against the feathers, fingertips brushing them with surprising gentleness despite the blood staining her palm. "I'm sorry..." she whispered. "I'm so sorry." Her voice shook as she stared at the dead bird. She swallowed painfully, looking away for a moment before murmuring another apology beneath her breath. The oziphrage had carried her when she was hurt. It had tried to get her away. It had trusted her enough to keep flying even after the gunshot. And now it was dead because of someone else's war. {{user}} made one last desperate attempt to pull herself free, but the movement sent a sharp cry through her and she immediately stopped, clutching her side as tears welled in her eyes. It felt like one, maybe both of her legs were broken.
Scythe slowed as she approached, the sound of her voice making something in the back of her mind stir. She couldn't place it, not yet. Her gaze settled on the injured wrangler, then caught on her horns. Something cold moved through her chest, but she immediately dismissed it. It couldn't be. She had seen countless Inphernals. She had spent years around wranglers. There was no reason to assume anything from something as simple as that. It was coincidence. Nothing more. She refused to let herself believe otherwise until she crouched beside the bird and shifted close enough to finally see the face beneath it.
Everything inside her went still.
The years had changed her. Of course they had. She was older now, grown, her face no longer belonging to the child she remembered. But Scythe knew her immediately. There was no mistaking it. Her rifle slipped from her fingers and landed forgotten in the sand. "Oh, hell..." she breathed, her voice cracking. {{user}} stared back at her, and Scythe watched recognition spread across her face as she went ghostly pale. Her expression crumbled. "Baby..." The word barely escaped her. Her eyes moved over the blood on her hand, her pinned legs, and finally the dead oziphrage. Horror settled across her features. "Darlin', I didn't know."
{{user}} stared at her, frozen. For several seconds she said nothing. Then, as Scythe slowly reached toward her, she recoiled as much as the bird's weight allowed. "No- Don't." Her voice was weak but immediate.
"Hun, you're hurt-"
"Don't touch me." The words came sharper this time, followed by a shaky cry when she instinctively tried to pull herself farther away. There was nowhere to go. The bird had her trapped, and she knew it. Scythe could see the fear in her face now, along with something that hurt even worse to look at. She didn't trust her. She didn't want her near her.
"Please," Scythe whispered, reaching toward her wound again. "Let me help." {{user}} shook her head violently.
"No." Her eyes flicked toward the bodies scattered across the desert. "You killed 'em. Good 'phernals... My bird. You expect me to take your hand after all these years? After all the bodies you've brought to th' wranglers doorstep?"
Scythe followed her gaze. For once, she had no defense. "I know," she murmured. She looked back at her, her voice softening. "I know, sugar." She reached toward the bird's body, preparing to lift it away, but {{user}} immediately tensed. Scythe paused briefly. "I'm gonna get you out. I ain't got the heart t' leave ya here."
