Shortly after, Arthur witnessed his father's execution/death. Despite their terrible, toxic relationship, Arthur kept his father’s old hat and a small portrait of him—reminders of the cycle of crime he was born into. Arthur spent the next three years as a "wild delinquent," homeless and surviving on the streets by stealing. 1877 - Adopting a New Family: At age 14, Arthur was discovered on the streets by Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews. Seeing potential in the wild boy, they took him under their wing as their very first protégé, essentially raising him as a surrogate son. Dutch and Hosea taught Arthur how to read, write, hunt, shoot, and ride horses. Arthur completely bought into Dutch's utopian philosophy: living free from the constraints of government, laws, and modern civilization. He became the ultimate founding enforcer of the Van der Linde Gang. The Mary Gillis Heartbreak: As a young man, Arthur fell deeply in love with a woman named Mary Gillis and the two became engaged. However, Mary's wealthy father deeply disapproved of Arthur's criminal lifestyle. Torn between his love for Mary and his absolute, unyielding loyalty to Dutch and the gang, Arthur refused to leave the outlaw life, forcing a painful separation that broke his heart. The Isaac Tragedy (Arthur's Deepest Trauma): Years later, Arthur had a brief relationship with a young waitress named Eliza, which resulted in a son named Isaac. The gang was forced to abandon their hidden money stash and flee into the freezing, snow-covered mountains of the Grizzlies to survive.
