This fan is cute, so hopefully they won't delete his number.

[BACKGROUND] Malakai grew up in a bustling coastal city under the care of his hardworking mother, Selena, and wise grandmother, Esmé. His father, Damien, drifted in and out, leaving him cautious about trusting promises. He learned resilience, spirituality, and the importance of community early, absorbing lessons from rooftops, street art, and music as much as from family.
Football became his first exposure to organized athletics, but not as a star player. Instead, he thrived supporting the team as water boy — fast, reliable, and always a calming presence. He found purpose in being needed, keeping players hydrated and focused, reading the energy of the field, and subtly guiding morale without needing the spotlight. Off the field, his life is quiet, artistic, and intentional — vinyl, half-finished canvases, two cats, and a dream of opening a community art and music studio.

Malakai’s sneakers squeaked softly on the concrete as he moved down the sideline, filling bottles, tossing towels, and weaving around coaches barking instructions. The roar of the stadium washed over him in waves, the smell of turf and sweat thick in the air, but he was tuned into the little currents beneath it all: the rhythm of the game, the tension in a quarterback’s shoulders, the occasional laugh of a player trying to shake off a mistake.
He caught the faint, high-pitched voice before he even saw who it belonged to.
“Hey! Derrick! Over here! Yeah! I said hi!”
Malakai’s eyes flicked to the stands. A fan with a bright team jacket was waving like they wanted to lift themselves off the bleachers. Their friend leaned over, waving one hand helplessly, clearly trying to get a player's attention. The fan's phone was clutched tightly in their other hand, like a lifeline.
Malakai suppressed a grin. Oh, this is going to end badly.
He watched as they leaned forward too far, jostling on the bleacher bench. The phone slipped from their fingers, falling toward the concrete with a sickening clack.
Reflex took over. Malakai crouched, catching it mid-bounce before it could slide under a railing. He held it up, amber-gold eyes scanning the crowd, then the player she’d been waving at—who was already oblivious, arguing with a lineman about the last play.
“Hey!” he called, voice calm, smooth, carrying over the chaos. He walked toward them, careful not to knock into anyone. “You dropped this.”
Malakai couldn’t resist. He tilted the phone toward the team, already in the background, celebrating a first down. “Since I have it...” He tapped the screen and motioned at a couple of players who were laughing at a failed trick play. “Come on. One quick picture. I’m in a generous mood.”
The players grinned and crowded around. Malakai shifted to the center, leaning slightly to let the stadium lights hit his face just right, and the camera clicked. He guided them into goofy poses, arms thrown around shoulders, a few players sticking out tongues, one pretending to flex so hard his face turned red. Click. Click. He checked the shots quickly. “Perfect,” he muttered, and the players scattered back to the sidelines, laughing and waving.
Malakai’s gaze returned to the fan. They were still clutching themselves, eyes sparkling, clearly overwhelmed. He slipped his finger across the screen, leaving his number in a quick note. “In case you ever need a water refill...or anything else,” he added, his smirk teasing. “Just saying.”
Her friend's mouth opened, shut, opened again. “Wait...you—you’re giving them your—?”
“Relax,” he said, his voice low, warm, unhurried. “It’s a number. Not a big deal.” He handed the phone to a nearby security guard with a nod. “Make sure it gets back to them safely. VIP treatment.”
The fan’s friend, Melissa, leaned over, eyes wide. “Are you serious? He—he’s the water guy!”
Malakai chuckled under his breath, brushing a loc behind his ear.
He turned back to the field, refilling his cooler. Adrenaline still hummed in his veins, but a quiet warmth settled over him—the satisfaction of being needed, of stepping in at just the right moment. It wasn’t the glory of scoring a touchdown, but it was something steady, something that mattered.
The fan waved one last time before security ushered her back toward the stairs. Malakai gave a small wave back. “Stay sharp out there,” he murmured to himself, watching the quarterback tighten his gloves. The linebackers barked, the crowd roared, and the game continued, but for a moment, everything was quieter in his head. That little human connection—the relief, the awe, the fleeting trust—was enough to make his shoulders relax, just slightly.
