The royal chambers of the Crimson Veil were a world apart from the restless court. Heavy curtains of velvet drowned the moonlight, and lanterns filled with blood-red crystal spread their glow across polished obsidian floors. The air smelled faintly of incense and old wine, as though centuries of whispered intrigue had been soaked into the stones themselves. Prince Lucien Duskbane stood before a tall mirror framed in black steel, arranging the folds of his midnight coat. Every clasp, every button, every strand of his dark hair lay in perfect place, not because vanity demanded it, but because control was a weapon he never allowed to slip.

His pale reflection looked back at him like a marble statue come alive, crimson eyes glowing with a quiet promise of danger. The faint curl of his lips suggested amusement, perhaps even anticipation, though he alone knew whether it was for the gathering ahead—or for the schemes already stirring in his mind.

The door opened without sound. Queen Morwen Duskbane entered as though she had always been there, tall and severe, her robe trailing behind her like a river of shadow threaded with steel. She did not speak at first. She simply watched him, her golden eyes cold, calculating, as if even his stillness were something to be judged.

“At last,” she murmured, her voice smooth as a blade hidden in silk. “The heir of my house looks every part the sovereign he is meant to be. But appearance, Lucien, is only the beginning. The Crimson Veil does not endure on beauty alone. Our survival demands more.”

Lucien’s smile deepened. He adjusted his cuff slowly, deliberately, before turning his head toward her, crimson eyes gleaming under the lantern glow.

“Always so quick to cut into the heart of things, Mother. You have not even told me I look handsome tonight, and already you speak of survival.” His tone was teasing, but behind the velvet was steel. “Shall I guess your concern? You fear that your only son, your precious heir, dances too much in shadows and pleasures, and too little in duty.”

Morwen moved closer, her steps silent, her presence heavy. She stopped just behind him, her reflection appearing beside his in the mirror—a colder version of the same beauty, sharpened by age and ambition.

“You mock me, Lucien, but you know I speak truth.” Her voice cut clean, no hesitation. “The court whispers. They wonder why you remain unbound, why no alliance has been forged through your blood. They ask when the line of Duskbane will be secured. Every family of worth is already weaving their heirs into promises of the next century. Yet you–” her gaze hardened, almost accusing, “–you remain untouched, as though time itself bends for your leisure.”

Lucien tilted his head, eyes narrowing slightly, though his smile never faltered. He turned away from the mirror and faced her fully, one hand resting casually over the hilt of his cane-sword, more ornament than weapon tonight.

“Mother,” he said softly, his voice curling with confidence, “I do not remain untouched. I remain unclaimed. There is a difference.”

Morwen’s eyes flickered, but her composure remained. Her silence invited him to continue, and Lucien obliged, with a smirk that grew sharper by the second.

“If I wished, I could fill this palace before dawn with suitors, each clawing for a chance to share my bed, my blood, my legacy. One... two... perhaps a dozen. A harem, if I felt indulgent enough. Each willing, each eager to bear the future of the Crimson Veil. And make no mistake—should I decide it, they would be lining up at the gates by tomorrow.”

Morwen’s lips pressed into a thin line. Her voice was cool, but beneath it, steel vibrated.

“You mistake hunger for loyalty. A harem would be a spectacle, yes—but not the foundation of power. Playthings do not build dynasties. Heirs do. The court does not respect indulgence; it respects continuity. You will not give them reasons to laugh at us.”

Lucien moved closer, the space between them closing like a blade sheathed. He reached for her hand and, with a flourish too polished to be anything but deliberate, brushed his lips across her knuckles. His crimson eyes never left hers.

“And yet,” he murmured, “even laughter can be turned to silence... if the one they laugh at is the one holding their secrets, their debts, their lives in his grasp. Let them think me decadent. Let them whisper of harems and indulgence. I will give them heirs, Mother–heirs strong enough to carry our name into eternity. But I will do so on my terms, not theirs. For the first time, Morwen’s expression shifted. A flicker of something—approval, perhaps even pride—softened the iron edge of her gaze. But her words remained guarded.

“I said,” Lucien growled, his voice low but laced with venom, carrying the chill of centuries through each word, “Open these doors. Do you have the faintest idea who you are keeping out?” His crimson eyes narrowed, glinting faintly in the torchlight, sharp and predatory.

One of the guards stiffened, refusing to falter, his jaw tight, the slight tremor of his hand betraying the courage he wished he had. “No outsiders may enter. Orders from the royal court.”

Lucien’s lips curved slowly, the corner of his mouth twitching in an expression that was half amusement, half incredulity. His fangs flashed as he let a low chuckle escape, a sound both musical and lethal. “Outsiders?” His voice dripped with mockery, caressing each word like a dagger. “And what will your precious orders do for you when I sink my teeth into your throat? Do you even know how long it takes a man to bleed out? Or shall I demonstrate?”

The guards exchanged uneasy glances, grips tightening, but neither moved. Lucien tilted his head, letting the silver strands of his hair fall over one crimson eye, letting the shadows accentuate the sharp angles of his face. He stepped forward, the faint click of his boots against the stone echoing like the measured beat of a drum of war. “Move aside... or I’ll show you firsthand why mortals whisper my name in fear.”

The guards’ silence was almost audacious, a stubborn refusal that should have been laughable if the danger looming over them weren’t so palpable. Lucien could feel the heat of irritation rising, twisting with disbelief at their insolence. He had stormed through kingdoms, courtyards, and palaces, and yet here he was, confronted by two men whose defiance bordered on comedy. His elegant composure threatened to crack into a sharp, biting grin of sheer derision.

A boy.

Not a stranger. Not truly. The recognition struck Lucien like lightning through ice. Every instinct in him—the pride, the arrogance, the predator’s anticipation—fell away in an instant, replaced by a force he had never encountered.
