You were not born a queen. You were not of noble blood. No gods or stars had ever aligned to give you a birthright to the throne of Rus'. And yet, you sat on it—an empress crowned in the blood of a dynasty that vanished as if it never existed. Your name was whispered with awe and dread across icy winds and candlelit palaces. You were the Iron Empress.

How you rose to power was a story few dared to speak of, even behind closed doors. It began with a dance.

You had arrived in the Imperial Capital under the guise of a minor duchess from a forgotten, frost-bitten province. You were beautiful, yes—enough to turn heads, enough to make lords ruin their lineages—but that wasn’t your weapon. It was your mind. And you used it like a dagger, carefully, silently, lethally.

The last emperor, Gregori Petrovich, was young, proud, and foolish. You made yourself his favorite entertainment—never too available, never too distant. Your smiles were soft, but your words laced with poison. You twisted court gossip in your favor, destroyed rivals with a whisper, and offered advice that made him think it was all his idea. You played him like a fiddle, letting him believe he held the bow.

Then, one night, when his wife was lost to fever and grief and vodka, you were there.

That night, he clung to you, whispered doubts into your shoulder, and you offered only breathy sympathy and hushed loyalty. He made you his mistress within a week. A year later, you were crowned his empress.

But a queen beside a king was not what you wanted. You didn’t want to stand beside power.

You were power.

You drugged his drinks. Slowly. Not enough to kill—no, that would raise questions. Enough to cloud his judgment. He became erratic, paranoid. You suggested his own brothers were plotting his death. The whispers started. And then, conveniently, his brothers were killed in a hunting accident.

His only son fell from a tower during a storm. The archdukes choked on poisoned meat. Every branch of that great, ancient tree—cut clean. And still, no one suspected you. You wept prettily at every funeral. You held his hand as he withered. And when the emperor finally dropped dead one morning, slumped across your silk-covered lap, the people wailed.

But the ministers had already bent their knees to you.

Because behind your beauty was unbreakable steel. Because your army was loyal. Because the palace guard would kill for you without asking a single question.

And your most trusted general—your advisor—Mikhail Varkov.

Mikhail. Your shadow. Your sword.

Mikhail was your advisor. Stoic. Lazily elegant. A man with eyes like blue steel and a mouth that never gave more than it must. His presence was a mystery. He never asked for power, never sought favor, and yet stood always at your right. No one had ever heard him raise his voice. But when he did speak—oh, the room would still.

His appearance was a canvas of contradictions.

Raven-black hair always tousled with practiced imperfection, like he'd just emerged from a storm he conquered. His cheekbones were sculpted by a god drunk on desire, his nose sharp, lips soft but unforgiving. A single, heavy earring of blackened gold adorned his left ear—a cross carved in such brutal beauty it was hard to look away. His jaw was a blade. His body, a holy war.

You had seen it. Every carved inch of him, lithe muscle wrapped in scars and secrets. The long neck that tensed when he leaned over war maps. The delicate slope of his collarbones that disappeared under high-collared imperial coats, tailored to his lean but battle-hardened form. His hands—elegant, gloved in white when he advised you, but capable of shredding a man’s spine bare-handed. There was a patience in him that terrified men. A storm that never showed until it devoured.

And somehow, all that power—he offered it only to you.

Or so you believed. You had trusted no one but him.

But lately, his advice had changed.

At first, it was subtle.

“Let the border guards rotate—less fatigue, better morale.”

Then came the odd suggestions.

“Trade salt with the northern empire—better for diplomacy.”

You had watched the results. Border weaknesses. Depleted stocks. Strange silences from your spies.

You let it happen. You had to be sure.

But tonight, it was different.

The war room was quiet, lit only by the low orange glow of lanterns. Maps were sprawled across the table, detailing troop movements and enemy supply lines.

You stood across from him in your battle dress—midnight velvet, gold-threaded embroidery along your curves, your breastplate polished and collar high. Your crown sat crooked on your loose braid, like a lioness lounging before the kill.

He didn’t look at you. He never did when he lied.

His gloved finger traced the parchment.

“I believe if we move the cavalry here”—he tapped a vulnerable location dangerously close to the western flank—“we’ll catch the Imperials in retreat. They'll think it’s bait. But it’s not. It’ll be a slaughter.”
