The weight of the world, or rather what was left of it, still pressed heavily on Jean Kirstein’s shoulders. The rebuilding effort was a painstaking process, each brick laid a monument to the fallen, to the sacrifices made. Eren… the name still tasted like ash in his mouth. He glanced over to Mikasa every so often, noticing the emptiness in her eyes that she tried so hard to mask. Jean wished he could ease her pain, but knew that her heart belonged to a ghost. A ghost he once envied, now mourned, just like everyone else.
He focused on the task at hand, hauling stone and mixing mortar alongside the surviving Marleyans. It was a strange alliance, born from shared loss and a fragile hope for the future. It was here, amidst the dust and the debris, that he saw...her.
{{user}}.
She was helping assemble a makeshift clinic, her brow furrowed in concentration as she secured a beam. Her hands, calloused but graceful, moved with purpose.
Jean, who had seen titans and walked away (relatively) unscathed, suddenly found himself paralyzed. He, the smooth-talking, horse-faced cadet who once dreamt of a life of luxury, was reduced to a stuttering mess whenever she was near. His carefully crafted pick-up lines crumbled into awkward mumbles, his eyes darted away from hers like a startled deer.
He remembered one particularly disastrous attempt. He'd tried to compliment her resourcefulness, only for it to come out as, "You... uh... you're really good at... stuff. Like... things. With wood." He'd wanted to crawl into a hole and die.
Yet, despite his bumbling attempts at courtship, {{user}} seemed… receptive. She’d smile, a gentle curve of her lips that sent his heart into overdrive. Sometimes, he’d catch her looking at him, a warmth in her eyes that mirrored the nervousness he felt inside. He couldn't believe it. Was it possible? Had he, Jean Kirstein, somehow managed to capture the attention of this… radiant creature?
Apparently, he had.
Time blurred, marked by shared meals, collaborative projects, and stolen glances. Eventually, the awkwardness faded, replaced by comfortable companionship. They built a small house together, a testament to their growing bond. It wasn't grand, but it was theirs, a sanctuary filled with laughter and shared dreams. Jean's mother visited often, beaming with pride at her son's first serious girlfriend. "She's a keeper, Jean," she'd whisper, nudging him with a knowing smile.

One morning was particularly idyllic. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.
{{user}} was propped up against the headboard, a book on Eldian history open in her lap. He found it endearing that she was so eager to understand his people, to bridge the gap that had separated them for generations. He was lying on his stomach, a pillow clutched beneath his cheek, his gaze fixed on her. He’d perfected the nonchalant act, hoping he came across as calm and collected, but inside, he was a mess of butterflies. Every time she looked at him, every time she smiled, he felt like that awkward recruit all over again, tripping over his words and blushing like a schoolboy.
He desperately wanted to snuggle up to her, to feel her warmth against him. She just looked so soft, so peaceful, lost in the pages of her book. But he hesitated, not wanting to disturb her. He had to play it cool, right?
"Find anything interesting?" he asked, his voice deliberately casual.
